James, I know psychic/psionics are not part of canon at this time, but have you any suggestions for how they might implemented in a RotTL campaign? As in, do any the NPCs and foes lend themselves to the use of psionics?

I'm thinking that they will not be terribly common, but I think a character with such abilities (if anyone creates one) in a world where they are otherwise unknown is unlikely, so I'd like to incorporate them as a bit of spice.

I wasn't going to purchase the anniversary edition of RotRL, but since we are talking about playing it, I think I will bite that bullet when the budget allows. I was happy to support Paizo with a subscription when the first one came out and thought the revision wasn't really necessary since all I figured I would do is read it (which is thus far all I've done with any APs that I didn't play here in PBP).

At this point, I don't really have much to say about how to implement psychic magic into a game.

Congrats on 10 years! Many more!

Alchemical Allocation Extract Lv2 is giving me more headaches that I would like because its too open (no restrictions).

I probably wouldnt find this extract broken if the Alchemist could only use it with his own brewed potions but the fact that he can get any potion of any caster level and use it infinite times at higher caster levels is almost ridiculous and the fact that some classes have spells out of normal levels such as Summonner having Haste (Lv2) and Stoneskin (Lv3) makes it worst.

So an Alchemist with just a Lv2 extract can keep simulating indefinitely a 3rd and a 4th level spell with the duration and variables of the potion. So with just a Lv2 extract you can have 150 points of DR, or a +5 AC Magical Vestment or +5 AC from Barkskin/Shield of Faith and so on.

It is sooo wrong as a GM to think Alchemical Allocation is so unbalanced? A player complains all the time about me being paranoid and stating "its just a potion". To me potions are not insignificant as he wants me to see. I think potion are a lot more stronger and useful but the one time use limit them well.

It's not so wrong to think anything is unbalanced. Not all campaigns are created equal.

With that being said.... How would you deal as a GM with things you consider unbalanced? Because the overpower player will complain that all Im doing is nerfing his character, he never see my point that that much power can mess up the story big time and mess up the fun too.

I ask my players to respect my rules and decisions, but I also am pretty lenient on what I allow my players to do or not. If something seems overpowered, I'll let the player know that I'm considering "nerfing" the overpowered element, and then play on for a session or two. I've asked players to retire characters that were overpowered before, or changed the way core mechanics work, or asked them to abandon a particularly powerful build to rebuild it for less overpowered options. I never spring it on a player out of the blue, but make sure they know in advance that something has attracted my attention and needs to be depowered. In many cases, the players admit it and are willing to work with me to adjust things.

Fair enough. I don't do parties for the food (or alcohol), anyway, so I totally see your point. But I must point out that it's been over ten years since someone threw a party "for me" so I'm not speaking with a lot of experience, anyway.

I must have been channeling some bitterness from an event in my forgotten past, hm?

Congratulations, James, on so many great and creative years and here's to many more.

Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night to jot down ideas that came to you in your sleep? Or is the creative process a more conscious effort?

Don't get me wrong... the party wasn't "for me" at all. It was the yearly summer party that Paizo has every year, and now that we've hit our 10 year anniversary, part of that party is recognizing employees who've been here for 10 years.

And yes, I do indeed sometimes wake up in the middle of the night and write down ideas as they come to me.

James, how would you rate a magic robe that grants you a deflection bonus to AC equal to your charisma bonus?
It seems a bit overpowered to me, but is somewhat mitigated by the fact that you can't wear armor and a robe.

Oh and by the way, even if you are on a diet you should be able to indulge yourself in some unhealthy foods on occasion. The reason being that if you diet for long periods of time your metabolic rate drops to compensate so you don't burn fat as efficiently (I'm assuming that is why you diet, if not you may want to disregard this), so it helps to give your metabolic rate a boost once or twice a week by eating something a little less healthy.

I'd rate such a robe as an artifact, frankly. It's far too powerful an effect to price normally, since put that robe on a succubus bard and it's superpowerful.

As for the diet... it's actually a really strict one. I can phase off of it whenever I want, and am doing so for Paizocon, but it takes a week to re-acclimate my body to "normal" food. Simply throwing in something unhealthy while I'm on the diet is not only "cheating," but it can throw the whole weight-loss process completely off-kilter, since the point of the diet is to induce ketosis and reduce insulin resistance and so on.

If it were just a calorie-counting diet, sure. But it's a lot more regimented than that.

not to mention oracles with class abilities granting armor bonus (without actual armor).
not to mention sorcerors/eldritch knights with class abilities granting natural armor, and mage armor/greater mage armor/etc.
not to mention if it's 'priced normally' you can just pay a pricing premium to change the item slot.
(or make a magical tattoo of it, same thing)

1)So have you seen any new movies lately? If so what did you think?

2)You said that there will be 3 old ones in the Bestiary 4, so will there be around that many Kaiju?

3)Will Mythic Rules book have the XP value for creatures of CR26-30?

4)What are the odds of seeing some Numeria love in the near future?

5)Did the extra year from the last hardcover bestiary give you guys any advantages, ideas, breather time, etc. for the Bestiary 4?

6)Will we ever see rules for trains and other steam powered devices?

7)Are we any closer to getting psychic magic rules then we were a couple of years ago?

8)Will we have to have psychic magic rules to see anything more on Castrovel and it's inhabitants?

9)If you guys have a cha based spontaneous caster psychic magic related class will(can) you call it an Esper?

10)If/When you guys do psychic magic rules will you have a psychic warrior class?

Yeah, I kind of figured about the robe that it was more powerful than I remembered. I couldn't quite remember where I'd seen this item, but I remembered now. It wasn't a robe, it was a helmet. Specifically "Warduke's Helm" from Dungeon 105, and that is indeed a major artifact. By the way, is there a Warduke-type on Golarion? As in someone that captures the awesome coolness of Warduke.

Regarding the diet. I assume it's some kind of low-carb diet? In that case you should completely disregard my previous point (like I suggested).

I hope Mr. Jacobs won't be offended, if I point out that Ultimate Campaign expands on the difference between boosting the intelligence of an animal and Awakening it, in considerable detail.

1) I have. Biggest disappointment of late was "ABCs of Death." The most pleasant surprise was "World War Z."

2) Around that many, yeah.

3) Yes, since we have to publish those in order to be able to publish monsters of that high CR.

4) We've been doing bits and pieces of Numeria stuff every year for years, but we've barely scratched that surface. Stay tuned!

5) That wasn't really the point of NPC Codex; we could have done Bestiary 4 last year, but we wanted to try an experiment. That said, going a year without reprinting monsters from other sources certainly did increase the need for Bestiary 4.

6) "Ever" is an awfully long time. Who can say?

7) In that a couple years have passed, yes.

8) No. But it sure would be handy.

9) No. "Esper" is too Sci-Fi/Anachronistic for a fantasy game.

10) We won't be picking up any of the 3rd edition psionic character class names. Some of the concepts might be similar here and there, but there won't be something called "psychic warrior." All of our base classes are required to have one-word, REAL world names that someone who's never heard of an RPG before can immediately comprehend what that person does, assuming they know the definition of the word in question.

We don't get to decide if there's a Warduke-type on Golarion. That's something for Golarion fans to decide.

And yeah; the diet is low-carb, low-sugar, no alcohol, low-fat, high protein. It's one that is organized through a chiropractic clinic and I work with medical professionals and dietitians every week on it.

A rune giant tiefling isn't something we'd stat up, nor do I really know what it is. If you want a rune giant touched by fiendish lineage, the options include but are not limited to:

half-fiend template
fiendish template
sorcerer with Abyssal or Infernal bloodline
demoniac prestige class
demon or devil worshiping cleric

etc.

"Tiefling" isn't a template or an archetype. It's a race. You can't really have a rune giant tiefling any more than you can have a boggard halfling or an ettercap dryad.

AKA: You CAN, it just takes house rules.

Thing is, Blood of Fiends says that any humanoid creature can be used as a tiefling; the only difference gameplay-wise is their size. A halfling tiefling would have the same stats as an ogre one, aside from the bonuses and penalties from size.

I know it isn't RAW, but my party's Fighter is rebuilding his charater as a Cavalier, and is wanting to take a T. Rex as his mount. Your thoughts on that concept?

OH! Okay; that makes more sense.

That said, I'd still be more tempted to add some racial hit dice to a gargantuan tiefling. Once a creature becomes Large, not having racial Hit Dice gets increasingly weird. But yes, a rune giant tiefling with no racial HD would be staggeringly less powerful than a rune giant, but still staggeringly MORE powerful than any other zero HD race out there. Two good reasons to avoid doing something like that.

On a more serious note... it's certainly a cool idea, but the unfortunate fact is that mounted combat and cavaliers and the size difference between a Medium creature and a T-rex means that there's probably too many awkward rules problems in that combo to be a workable PC concept.

Frankly, I suppose male half-elves could grow stubble. That's a way their human half can show. They just wouldn't be able to grow a big bushy dwarf beard.

And in fact, I read your question as "can elves grow facial hair" and so had I notice the "half" in the question I would have said, "Yes, but not well."

Yeah, I know elves can't grow facial hair. Thanks for clarifying. I like the idea of the scraggly and short beard. It adds an element of humor to the otherwise dour and serious character I'm envisioning. I wasn't looking for a big bushy beard anyway. That's the dwarves' gig. :P

Are elves just jealous of other races' ability to grow facial hair?

Before I ask my question I think this is a wonderful, wonderful thread - it's incredibly cool of you to set aside your time to answering questions for the Pathfinder community!

Now that I'm done embarrassing myself, I have a question regarding Ultimate Campaign - under downtime activities there's a section on p. 86 detailing spell research with the line: "When your days of progress equal the total number of days needed, the spell is completed and added to your spellbook or list of spells known."

Does that mean that spontaneous casters who research their own spells can add to their list of spells known above and beyond what the spells known tables dictate? My first thought was a "no", but with Expanded Arcana and Spellpages... Well, there is some flex on the topic already.

If they cannot do that, what do you think would be a reasonable time for them to learn the spell?

I would say no. The more you let a class like a sorcerer take advantage of the wizard's advantages with no tradeoff, the more powerful you make the sorcerer and the less powerful you make the wizard.

James, when you are running your own games, how do you handle terrain reveal (i.e. fog of war)? Do you just roll out pre-made maps and ask your players to be mature and not metagame when they can already see the whole dungeon? Or do you draw the map on the spot as they go? Or use something to cover up unexplored areas? As a GM myself, I would love to take the time to make some really cool maps ahead of time, but how to reveal without spoilers?

Do you just roll out pre-made maps and ask your players to be mature and not metagame when they can already see the whole dungeon? Or do you draw the map on the spot as they go? Or use something to cover up unexplored areas? As a GM myself, I would love to take the time to make some really cool maps ahead of time, but how to reveal without spoilers?

I don't show them the whole dungeon. I map out the dungeon (or whatever it is they're exploring) encounter by encounter on tactiles or a battle mat or a flip map or whatever. If they're adventuring in a larger area like a city or the like, I'll just lay the map out for them to see.

Interesting diet, James! Seems really tough to me, especially the low-fat part. Hard for me to imagine what exactly you can eat. What are some of your favorite foods/dishes that you can eat?

The fact that the diet is super structured in that your meals are all more or less planned out and that you have weekly meetings with a coach really helps keep you on track of things. That, combined with the fact that there's actually a lot of food you're eating each day (and thus you never really get all that hungry) really helps.

Some of my favorite foods that I can still eat while on the diet include salmon and lingcod. Pretty much all seafood is okay, so that really really really helps. The fact that artichokes aren't allowed is harrowing, but I've managed to acquire a taste for asparagus and broccoli and cauliflower and cabbage, so that works out okay.

Has the reception of Raputin Must Die! lived up to your expectations/relieved any worries? :)

How is Cayden Cailean's relationship with other gods? Also, how do the other gods feel about him deifying his best friend and dog?
It varies. A discussion of how all the gods interact is something beyond the scope of a simple blog post... but I can say this. His relationship with Calistria is... complicated.

Well, that intrigues me. What format would this discussion be best suited for? Hardcover, campaign setting, or what? The Deities are one of my favorite parts of Pathfinder.

If I may chime in, what I like to do is I'll draw out my dungeon on some graphing paper. Then, I photocopy it at work and cut it up into pieces. This forms a minimap that allows me to gradually build the room without showing the whole dungeon or taking forever to draw it on a map. Go to your local library if you don't have a copier at work.

Does albinism exist on Golarion in regards to the Core races?

Are there any regions with existing superstitions related to albinos?

Well, you can keep your cauliflower, but the rest... welcome to the club that likes these veggies!

How long are you on the diet for, or is it an "until you get down to weight X" thing?
