The Arena for Green Blood on a Black Rock (Wow!)

PaizoCon General Discussion

I just saw the photos for the 'arena' that Adam Daigle and Brandon Hodge have been building for this particular Paizo Con event.

And I just wanted to post that it looks awesome.

I can only conclude that it would be an honor to be maimed on the Black Rock for the mere sporting amusement of the Free Captains.

(Apologies if you guys were trying to keep this under wraps)

How about apologies to those of us who are not going to PaizoCon?

Not only have you teased us with something we cannot see in person, you've acknowledged that there are pictures and you have not produced them.

Humbug.

Point taken.

Your bitterness is well placed on both counts.

Perhaps after the Con photos will be available. It will look cooler still with the minis in action.

Sweet. That event was already on top of my "want" list. Gotta fill out my lottery form!

And which of you lucky guys gets to put that in your carry-on?

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

@Jason: Awesome! I hope you get the ticket, we'd love to have you!

@yoda: Neither actually. We're shipping it. The thing is nearly 3 feet across at it's widest, so carrying it on would be at best annoying.

Wow, what evebnt is this? where do I sign up?

The Exchange

Adam, speaking from experience, I would take some touch-up and glueing materials with you in your carry-on, so you don't have to run out to a supply store if/when your arena arrives damaged in shipping. My sister shipped a model FedEx across the country and she was REALLY glad she'd brought a glue-gun in her luggage when she opened the box at her destination!

Nice! I hope I get in on this one again this year.

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

I'm not sure if ol' Rattlebones will be back this year, but I've got a good roster forming for players to choose from.

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

Wise words, Zeguma. We will certainly plan accordingly. Thanks!

Paizo Employee Chief Creative Officer, Publisher

I was salivating over the description of this. Can't wait to see it happen at the show! The Black Rock itself looks great!

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

Well damn you, Erik Mona for having your Spires happen at the same time. I share some pictures and stories when you're done. :)

Sovereign Court

Wish I could be there guys.

:
I want to play on it when you get back. Drop a rock or set something on fire.

Silver Crusade

This is looking awesome. :D

Practicality and safety be damned, this demands some artificial rain and lightning to be supplied during play.

Shadow Lodge Contributor, RPG Superstar 2010 Top 8

Aw man! I wish I could participate again this year, last year was so much fun. Unfortunately, I'm running my own game that time slot.

We'll try and play a few combats on it before we ship it out. I'm not sure we're going to bother with shipping back to Texas after the Con.

Winner gets to keep it, first out has to pay for shipping? :)

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

Ha! That'd be hilarious. I was gonna give out books for prizes, but I love the idea of consequences!

@Ben: A shame that. My event got scheduled at the same time as a few things I wanted to do as well, but hey, what can ya do? Hell, maybe I can run an after-hours version at some point during the weekend.

@Mikaze: Hmmmm...puts on his mad scientist cap...

I was going to post the series of pictures, but it took longer to take them between coats than it took to paint it. Soooooo, without further ado, here is the mostly complete Black Rock!

I really went for a bilestone feel to it.

Hey, I'm local. If I win I'll just put it in the back of my car and take it home!

Hey I didn't see any 5ft squares. (grin)

They're on there now! Done manually with a charcoal pencil so they blend in nicely and don't ruin the whole paint job. It looks great! Now to just get Daigle over for some detail work and some final touches.

I'm free tomorrow afternoon. :)

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

Alright, I posted in the Lottery...Who Got What? thread, but I didn't want to clog it up with my particular questions when I have a nice thread here for all the participants to gather.

So far I know I've seen that Timitius and Oblivisci Cruciari are in, so let's see who else we have.

Also, we're going to be doing some gambling on the side letting spectators as well as the free-captains take their chances and put some gold on the monster they think will win Green Blood on a Black Rock for 4710. Winningest bettor gets a prize as well!

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

Bump, Free Captains!

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

Okay, fine. I'm killing all of you.

No...wait.

You're killing all of you!

Awesome!

Silver Crusade

Losing competitors should lose thier mini, from which the heads can be clipped off and placed on tiny pikes around the rock.

YOU KNOW, FOR KIDS.

But...but...they're *my* minis. I couldn't do that.

Yet another reason to go with paper tokens, my friend. ;-)

Luckly I got in on this one looking forward too it very much, I really want that free copy. So the monsters you get are completely random or what?

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

Not entirely random. There is a roster of critters and the players get to pick two monsters out of my stable and choose where to place them in the brackets. There are rules for subbing in your alternate between rounds, but last year, pretty much everyone kept their best contender on the rock throughout.

Edit: Also, I just got off the phone with Brandon. He shipped the Rock to Seattle today and that sucker cost a pretty penny to get there! It may be foam, but apparently shipping something 3 feet across gets spendy.

I am looking forward to this game it will be much fun..I saw the rock it looks really cool by the way.

Sincerest apologies, but Sparky will not be there to defend his title.

Can't wait to hear the outcome from this year, though! Last year was a ton of fun!

Very nice. :)

Yar! And ye'd best believe that me an' Ol' Rattlebones would show up ta thwart yer defense if'n ya were showin' up...don't ye doubt. Rassumfrassum stupid durned fire elemental anyhow...

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

We ran some playtests tonight and it was awesome!

Can't wait for Friday!

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

Alrighty folks!

Sorry I didn't sound the trumpets and congratulate our winner for 4710's Green Blood on a Black Rock sooner, but without further hesitation...

Congrats to Captain Azahael Curtis and Bumpyback for winning this prestigious event!

I'll have a full report complete with pictures available in a matter of days, but for now, here's a shot of the winner, Tim Nightengale and his mighty ankylosaurus.

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

I should also mention second place went to the mighty Gary McBride and Charlie Bell placed wise bets and came away from the table with the prize for most gold!

And while those three winners rocked the hardest, everyone at the table was delightful and a ton of fun! I'm glad y'all were there.

(Also, special thanks to Chuck for getting Alex to be our 8th spot at the table.)

Shadow Lodge

This was a great event, glad I was able to sneak it in.

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

Hey folks! Brandon and I are at it again, running Green Blood on a Black Rock 4711!

The lottery hopefuls cast their lots, the numbers have been crunched, and now folks should be able to see what they got.....so I want to know....

Which of you canny captains will be putting up monsters to shed some blood on this black rock? Who got in?

Shadow Lodge Contributor, RPG Superstar 2010 Top 8

I didn't, but I'll probably be showing up anyway!

Not I. I've got to smite PC's in the PFS Grand Melee. I'll send their remains your way to feed the victors.

RAAAAAGH!

Scarab Sages

I got in. Last year I came in second losing by two hit points if I recall.

This year there will be no survivors!

Excellent!

Just so folks know, you can still show up and bet on the contestants without actually fighting a monster in the tournament.

Whoah!

I think this may be the case of the first two-year stint. You got second by such a close margin, this may be your year!

Glad to have you, my supremely destructive friend!

It's a slightly different skill set, but let's see how you bring your IronGM semi-finalist skills to the Black Rock!

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

Bumpity Bumpypants!

I know 2 of 8.

Who else got this event?
