Yeah. If you want it that badly I'll part with mine for only 100 large. When Saga's Starships of the Galaxy became hard to find it was listed in the hundreds on Amazon by some mook...but you could still get it from a number of online distributors at below list.
As my mother used to say, "Askin' ain't gettin'"

Usually it's because someone paid that much for it. So others figured they could get that much as well. You see this with comics a lot. Just because someone paid an obscene amount for a comic book everyone else thinks others will. I've seen this same behavior with Collectible Card games too. Seems the second there is shortage the price shoots up because someone with too much money paid too much.

Anybody who wants it that badly would (I hope) do a little searching around, you can find it a lot cheaper than that elsewhere. I got myself a brand new copy for list price plus shipping, and considered buying a second copy just to hang on to.
Basically, if they actually sell that high it's because buyers are being lazy and sellers are being greedy.

Hi w0nkothesane
Last year I bought 2-6 from Amazon but unfortunately I couldn’t grab a copy of 1.
After three months of waiting, they apologized and cancelled my order.
I’ve been searching for Burnt Offerings since then but haven’t had any luck so far.
If you can tell me at least where to start looking, I’ll really appreciate it.
Thanks!

Sometimes this is the result of a poorly-behaved bot. Some used booksellers have programs that automatically post their inventory on Amazon, with instructions to underbid the existing cheapest one by some nominal amount, because that's easier than trying to figure out what any given book is worth (and is usually means your copy will sell sooner than the one that costs 50 cents more.)
When there is no other copy for sale (and the original is out of print, so Amazon isn't offering new copies at retail prices), these bots can 'guess' very high numbers because they have no reference point.
It doesn't mean anyone is actually willing to pay that price.

I recently picked up the issues I was missing from Rise of the Runelords (I think 3 of them just went out of print) but you can still find them at most local game stores on the BC coast. ie: Victoria, Nanaimo, Duncan, etc.
I can see paying up to 1 and a half or even twice the price after something goes out of print and is no longer available at your FLGS, but it's up to the consumer to know what a ridiculous asking amount is.
Chapters Online is a good example. When you check out gaming books in the used books section, they may have 4 used copies of an RPG book ranging from 50US to 500US. Something is always worth was someone is willing to pay for it and I never blame the seller. It's up to the buyer as to what they're willing to pay.

Its crazy but it is becoming all too common with rpg supplements these days.....
I saw Temple of Existential Evil up there for $2000
Wilderlands of High Fantasy Box Set for $1100.00
Nights Dark Masters for WFRP consistently ranges from $100.00 to $250.00
Knights of the Old Republic for Saga I've seen upwards of $200.00
I was looking to complete my collection of Gurps Traveller books the other day and found Sword Worlds selling for over a hundred dollars...
SJGames had it in stock at their Warehouse 23 store with a selling price of $9.99

Just checked out ebay for Burnt Offerings. $144.00 to $250.00.
It might be time for me to sell my extra copies... I even have one with the alternate cover. When Pathfinder started I thought one day it would be a big seller and have an extra full set and 6 copies of #1, 7 copies of #2, and two copies of #3.
Naybe I should pick up a few more copies of the last three while they are still around and sell at least three sets in another year or two.

I sometimes see planescape material offered for ridiculous prices as well, especially on ebay. And 1st Ed stuff is sometimes offered at outrageous prices as well.
For 1st Ed collectibles, refer to the acaeum for reasonable price listings.
For other collectibles, I found tome of treasures to have quite good listings, if not as thorough as the acaeum.

Best way to see what price something is going for.
Completed listings show what people are actually selling them for, not what they're asking to sell it for. ;)

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the concept of Existential Evil though.
Sounds awesome.

Just out of curiosity....does anyone know why this book is so rare? I got back into rpg's after it came out. Was it a limited run? Hackmaster loose their license right after it came out?

If you're going to part with the alternate cover, I'm interested...
Ross has it down, though - exorbitant prices are normally due to a stupid automated pricing bot, though, there are some halfwits out there that think everything is rare and price as if it's worth it's weight in gold.
I just sold RotRL #1-#6 on eBay for $132.50 (I'm the bottom of that "completed" link posted above). If you can manage to be patient (I have a real hard time at this), you can usually find stuff at a much more reasonable price (like $75-$80 for Burnt Offerings).
Edit: Here's a Burnt Offerings for $20 (not mine)

Announcement!
I am now offering to sell my (used) copy of Pathfinder #1 for $10,000,000.00 - please reply by carrier pigeon with bid.
[/announcement]It's meaningless - someone was selling the core rulebook, before it was released for $1000.
*Whacks pigeon*
Where'd you go with my money? Bad pigeon!*Looks up*
Huh? Oh, right, some people will buy anything...
Stupid pigeon...

LOL. I thought that was just a typo on Temple of Elemental Evil.
There really is a book Temple of Existential Evil! (I just Googled it.)
Heh, I'd still like to have a look at it, even though it's actually real.
