"And why would I want to speak with someone? Why do you think I wear this axe here, as a fashion accessory?"

"It's a very pretty axe, actually. Mahaffy jests - I do not try to speak with every potential foe, but I have lived to tell the tale once or twice because we gave those we encountered a chance for a peaceful parting of the ways. I'm sure you've lived long enough to realize that never everything can be resolved with an axe -- sometimes flight is appropriate, sometimes negotiation is appropriate."

I don't think anyone but Roylenna is still here from the fight with the ogre, are they, BT? There was a great case of negotiate or die...

Ka'kara:
Roylenna's agreeable to letting you augment her existing tattoo, but she doesn't even trust the water after her last trip to a drinking establishment.

Female Halfling Bard 1

Tika will polietly pass on the tattoo

"Dragons you say?" Tika asks Nyak her face lighting up "What kind? How big, How many of them?"

Tika wrote:

Roylenna will nod solemnly, saying to Nyak, "No need to exaggerate how fearsome they are or how many there are, either. She's a bard - she will take care of that." Delivered, of course, with a twinkle in her eye.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Nyak shrugs. "Red and blue dragons, mostly. Actually the really big dragons are not to worry about. They sleep most of the time and won't bother with small prey like us. They wake up, eat a village and go back to sleep. It's the smaller ones that get aggressive. Old dragons are wise."

"We leave tomorrow. Bring everything you need."

"And what would that be? How many days' travel should we expect? Any unusual areas on the trail -- do we need ropes and such, or is it basically a good trail? If we encounter a dragon, what do you suggest? Hide? Run? Something else?"

Female Human Barbarian 7

Ka'kara pipes in, "We hit it lots til it gets smart and flies away. Just like we did last time, Lenna."

Male Dwarf Fighter 1

"Negotiating is for officers, and I am not an officer. I am an honest dwarf!"

Lyria snorts when hearing Nyak say this. "You can keep not worrying if that's what you want, but to me it seems dangerous enough. If such a creature flies above, I'll hide no matter what".

Nyak: "Of course. Dragon come, you hide. If you're lucky, it won't bother to eat your donkey."

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Eventually you have finished your purchases and are enjoying your new magic trinkets. Nyak has brought a number of donkeys and porters, but he's clear that you will have to be the ones to defend your caravan if you are attacked.

The first few days of your travels are pretty uneventful. You kill and drive off some foolish goblins and even a particularly hungry wyvern (no xp for this, since it's just flavor), but on the third day trouble hits.

I need your marching order. There are six donkeys, and the halflings can ride them if you like, but the rest of you will probably have to walk unless you want to buy horses or use spells. Also you can start rolling for initiative and perception checks.

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

Roylenna will definitely take advantage of the opportunity to ride one of the donkeys, mostly likely toward the middle of the pack train.

Perception 1d20 ⇒ 13
Initiative 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16

32/42 HP

Lyria will walk by foot in third position, after the Kakara and some other fighter-type.

Init:1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Perception:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20

Lyria scans the path the group is walking through while her mind drifts away, thinking of dragons.

Perception 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16

Initiative 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

Artival will be toward the middle back of the pack. He is squishy, after all.

Male Dwarf Rogue 5

Perception 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Initiative 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Mahaffy is at the rear

Female Human Barbarian 7

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 6

Ka'kara is in the front.

Male Dwarf Fighter 1

Bombur is next to Ka'kara. Initiative 1d20 ⇒ 15, Perception 1d20 ⇒ 10

Female Halfling Bard 1

Tika will probably beriding a donkey next to Roylenna

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

As you are busy pushing the donkeys uphill a narrow pass, trouble rears its ugly face in the shape of several (meaning four) ogres, poking their heads over the ridge on both sides of you. Ahead something that looks like an ogre sporting large leathery reddish wings and a draconic head points an unpleasantly large bow that seems to be on fire at you and screams something about demanding a toll of 10 gp for each head and 50 gp for each donkey. Nyak spits on the ground and curses, drawing his bow.

Will you pay the toll or shall we proceed with the initiatives?

Perception 1d20 ⇒ 11
Initiative 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18

"Draconic spawn," says Rhianna, unfazed. "Siginicantly stronger than is usual for his species, and likely resistant to flame as well."

Female Human Barbarian 7

Well, you all know what Ka'kara's reaction is going to be but she doesn't go til later.

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

Initiatives

18 Rhianna
16 Artival
16 Roylenna
15 Bombur
09 Mahaffy
09 Lyria
06 Ka'kara
?? Tika

"Nyak, are these business associates of yours, by any chance? Maybe they just do not recognize you with a group of strangers?"

She does not appear to be reaching for her coin purse.

Male Dwarf Fighter 1

"I don't know about the rest of ye, but that mongrel over there will only get the gold if he takes it from me cold dead hands!"

Female Halfling Bard 1

Initative

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

"oh my giant ogres and a draconic one as well............This is great." Tika exclaims before writing more notes into her journal

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Nyak's face is stony as he responds: "It's worse than that. That... is my brother." He shrugs, shaking off his cloak and unfolds his wings, slowly rising into the air, an image of grim determination.

Nyak goes on 6, but before Ka'kara. The other dragonspawn goes on 10 and the ogres not until 1. As of now the ogres are about 20 feet away and have cover. The terrain between you and the ogres is steep enough to be considered difficult terrain but does not require climb checks. Hope to have a map up soon.

Rhianna, Artival, Roylenna and Bombur are up.

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

Initiatives update

18 Rhianna
16 Artival
16 Roylenna
15 Bombur
10 Nyak's brother
09 Mahaffy
09 Lyria
06 Nyak
06 Tika
06 Ka'kara
01 Ogres

I'll wait to see what the others plan to do.

Ftr1/Pal1 | LG | AC(19)17/14/16 | HP 18//18 | F+5,R+1,W+0 | Init+ 1 | Smite Evil 1/day

Knowing his friends the way he did, Artival suspected the group's answer. Without wanting to strike the blow beginning the brawl, he knew that it was coming. Therefore he casts his familiar protection spell, making him harder to be hit by the ogres.

Cast Mage Armor.

32/42 HP

Lyria hesitates: "Are you sure you want to fight and kill your own brother? Whoever does that is damned to eternity for gods and men".

Other than giving the warning, Lyria won't object fighting.

Male Dwarf Fighter 1

If Bombur stands with his shield in front of Roylenna , can she gain cover? Bombur is large for a dwarf. If so, than consider him protecting the little halfling so that she can blast away.

Bombur Stonefist wrote:

Yeah, Roylenna would gain cover just by standing behind Bombur.

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

Roylenna likes how you think. Seeing the dwarf take a defensive stance and look over his shoulder at her, the halfling slides down from the back of the donkey. Behind the provided cover, she begins casting a spell that will take effect on her turn next round - Enlarge Ka'kara. Really! It's in my spell list that way!

Male Dwarf Fighter 1

"Get behind me, little one, and start ye blasting!"

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)
Bombur Stonefist wrote:
"Get behind me, little one, and start ye blasting!"

"Rest assured, there will be blasting if they insist on fighting. You have not seen Rhianna and Artival in action yet."

Louder, "Nyak, is there anything we should know about the toll collectors? Other than they are family?"

Rhianna seems frustrated as she begins chanting. Casting mage armor. I've lost my list of spell formulae for her, however, until I can get my laptop back functioning... (sigh)

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Nyak snarls: "Watch out for my brother. He's more dangerous than he looks."

As if to prove it, the bow-wielding half-dragon lets fly a burning missile that hits Rhianna for 14 points of damage (4 fire). Another arrow bounces off Artival's protective field.

Mahaffy and Lyria are up (and Bombur, if he likes).

Female Human Barbarian 7
Roylenna Brenoien wrote:

lol

Male Dwarf Fighter 1

If Bombur can reach them with his throwing axes and not remove the cover from Roylenna, he will attack. 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 111d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 If not, he will remain guarding the sorcerer and wait for next round to be enlarged as well, if there are spell slots available. Then he will go into melee, but keeping Roylenna behind him.

Female Halfling Bard 1

"This is really great better by the second." Tika shouts from the top of the donkey while furiously writing in her journal aparently not concernd (or not having noticed) the brawl that is beginning to unfold

Ftr1/Pal1 | LG | AC(19)17/14/16 | HP 18//18 | F+5,R+1,W+0 | Init+ 1 | Smite Evil 1/day

I am away from the computer for the rest of the day. I will be back in about 12 hours or so. Please autopilot Artival. At this range, magic missle or the elemental ray is probably his attack. Thanks.

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

Add Enlarge Bombur to spell list. Check.

"Lyria, will you be able to provide a blessing to our allies this day? Tika, can you sing of our old exploits while you record our new ones?"

I can cast Bless if you don't have it prepared or if you have other plans. Like healing Rhianna. I'm trying to decide whether I should cast that spell second round or turn right around and start casting on Bombur.

32/42 HP

"So much for diplomacy and sacred rules I guess...", Lyria says while positioning herself better. Undistracted by the arrows flying past her towards the magic-users, she begins to cast a spell. Her eyes turn blue as she looks towards one of the ogres, which's eyes start to turn blue at the same time.

Charm Person on an ogre, DC should be 15 if I'm not mistaken.

This could make the battle quite easier if it works, so I chose to do it instead of casting bless at the moment.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

One of the ogres looks momentarily befuddled but manages to shake off Lyria's magic.

Nyak rises into the air and roars, small blue flames emerging from his mouth: "These people are under my protection, Seeyak. You will regret this!". Two arrows from his bow strike Seeyak in the chest, but only seem to make him angrier.

Mahaffy, Ka'kara and Tika are up.

Am out of town at the moment. Haven't given up on the map yet though.

Male Dwarf Rogue 5

Mahaffy loads his heavy crossbow .

I guess clerics aren't made for Charming.

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

BT:

Spoiler:
Always willing to work something up if you have a starting point or description with distances.

Depends on the target, too. Still surprises me that Giants are considered humanoid and therefore potentially susceptible to Charm Person, but if they have levels, they could have a decent Will save. We don't know that they are all brutes, either, so they might have considerably better Will saves than expected. IOW, it was worth a try.

Female Halfling Bard 1

Tika slowly realising there is a fight going on slides off the donkey whilst simultaniously beginning an inspiring tune with her harmonica and drawing her crossbow.

Female Human Barbarian 7

Ka'kara delays her action until Roylenna's turn so as not to get out of range.

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

Round one

18 Rhianna - casts Mage Armor
16 Artival - casts Mage Armor
16 Roylenna - dismounts and begins casting Enlarge Ka'kara
15 Bombur - moves to shield Roylenna
10 Seeyak - shoots Rhianna
09 Mahaffy - loads heavy crossbow
09 Lyria - casts Charm Ogre
06 Nyak - shoots Seeyak
06 Tika - dismounts and begins inspire courage
06 Ka'kara - delays until Roylenna's spell takes effect
01 Ogres - sit down to play poker; one has a green visor and sleeve garters... but no sleeves

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

The ogres finish their poker game and put the cards away.

The ogres launch a barrage of javelins at you. Tika is hit for 9 points of damage, Lyria for 8 and Bombur for 12. Mahaffy is too quick for them, though.

Rhianna, Artival, Ka'kara, Bombur and Roylenna are up.

32/42 HP

On her turn, Lyria will probably retreat a bit (so the ogres and half-dragon are out of her heal range) and Channel Energy for a 2d6 area heal - don't get too far or into melee if you want the heal.

Health Report:
Rhianna: 8/22
Lyria: 16/24
Tika: 16/25
Artival: 23/23
Roylenna: 26/26
Mahaffy: 27/27
Bombur: 35/47
Ka'kara: 50/50
