I thought the same thing, it seemed like she could move further back after leaving the staggered position. In any case, she's not in melee, but I don't know how far she is from the giant. Aside from that, assuming Ka'kara will rage, she'll be on 7hp, right?

Ka'kara is already raging (so yes she is at 7 h.p. but remember that those are temporary h.p.). She is really at -1 h.p. right now, her temporary h.p. are the only thing keeping her standing. It still has to get out of the grease spell right? Let's hope it fails.

Heh, I'll definitely get a map next time. I was assuming that Lyria 5' stepped out of the giant's reach, since otherwise she'd draw an AoO. So she's 15' away from it. Not in melee, but the closest living foe (which was what I meant). I guess her best bet is to back away twenty feet and channel, which would put almost everyone but the giant in the area of effect (let's say everyone for simplicity's sake). The goblin actually has Shield but not Mage Armor up.
She'll also probably catch the orc in the area of effect. What about the goblin?

Yes, but the orc is at full health and the other orc is extremely dead. The goblin is out of range.

32/42 HP

Ok, its an obvious choice then.

Lyria finds herself alone in front of the giant, after watching with horror as the giant's club splatters Kai's brains all over the place. Ka'kara tries to retreat and gets hit pretty bad herself. Lyria, terrified, quickly retreats backwards to the rest of the party which aren't faring too well themselves, then raises her symbol and lets the familiar blue wave of healing wash over the party, healing minor wounds and relieving some of the pain.

Channel Energy:1d6 ⇒ 4

Edit after 4 hp heal:
Artival is on 10hp
Rhianna is on 7hp
Lyria is on 9hp
Ka'kara is at 3hp (real) and 11hp (raging)
Mahaffy is at max health and active
Tika and Roylenna are at max health and disabled.

Bugger. With my scorching rays gone, that shield negates all my prepped ranged spells except my bloody ray of frost. Note to self: get dispel magic as soon as it becomes available. Tom, I believe you said that the goblin is about 25 ft up? If so, this should work...

Rhianna staggers backward under the goblin's mystic assault. As she gets her feet under her, her face is a mask of terrible concentration underneath the blood streaming from her scalp. As she reaches into her pack again, those nearby can hear her muttering to herself. "Three missiles per casting. One expression of vo-tier; all the rest y-tier or lower. Probability: preparation arcanist, weakening spell supply. Third magic missile casting unlikely. Offense or defense?" Just then, Lyria's wave of healing energy sweeps over her, and she nods. "Decision made, then." Raising her voice as she withdraws a scroll from the pack, she reads out, "Veri ythu jevoza!" A ball of flame, four feet across, appears directly beneath the goblin and leaps upward to engulf him.

Move action to pull a scroll of flaming sphere from my pack, standard action to cast it. Flaming spheres can leap up to 30 feet upward to strike targets. Damage 3d6 + 2 ⇒ (2, 2, 4) + 2 = 10, Reflex save DC 13 negates.

Female Halfling Bard 1

Got a question can a character that can only take move actions still make attacks of opportunity?

Male Dwarf Rogue 5

Mahaffy strikes the orc again
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 131d8 + 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + (5, 1) + 2 = 10

He then whirls and moves towards the giant (thus drawing an AoO from the still living orc (damn it !) . He moves so as to put himself before Lyria (I doubt I can put myself before Ka'Kara specially with a darwf rate of move)

"Ka'kara leave him ! he is mine ! Come and face a dwarf rather than a girl you ! "
AC 21 against the giant, just in case...

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Nope, nauseated characters can't attack.

Rhianna's flaming globe jumps up at the goblin, but he manages to (narrowly) dodge it, zipping to and fro on his broom. As Mahaffy runs towards the giant, it laughs horribly, spits some blood and gingerly steps out of the greasy area before aiming a blow at the defiant dwarf.

Just as Mahaffy had anticipated the stupid giant tries to swat him like a bug and his dwarven training enables him to roll with the blow, dodging it elegantly.

That's what I call heroics, and it's worth a hero point.

Artival and Ka'kara are up.

Ftr1/Pal1 | LG | AC(19)17/14/16 | HP 18//18 | F+5,R+1,W+0 | Init+ 1 | Smite Evil 1/day

With the dwarf out of range, Artival again attempts to ensorcel the orc. He moves far enough to avoid being clubbed, and tries again to blast the orc with a spell.

Color Spray again. DC 13 will save. Please miss it, Mr. Orc.

Female Human Barbarian 7

Sorry, she can't leave you to face it by yourself. She's not going to lose another companion like she did Rana.

Circling the giant to put it between Mahaffy and herself she once again tries to skewer it with her spear, "Can't let you stand by yourself and take all the glory, Mahaffy!" She spits a huge gobbet of blood, then smiles.

To hit: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17 missed :(
Damage: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12

Do your worst Mahaffy, you now have flank :)

Ftr1/Pal1 | LG | AC(19)17/14/16 | HP 18//18 | F+5,R+1,W+0 | Init+ 1 | Smite Evil 1/day

My bad. The Will DC vs. Artival's spell is 14, not 13. Math is hard.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

The orc hesitates a minute whether to go after Mahaffy, when a blast of swirling colors from Artival knocks him senseless. The goblin swears and spits at you as it sends another volley of missiles at Rhianna (for 8 points of damage).

Lyria and Mahaffy are up, then the giant.

32/42 HP

If I summon an eagle, as in http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-lists-and-details/-e/eagle/eagle/s ummoned-creature-eagle, it gets 3 attacks with +3 bonus with 1d4 damage, right?

Lesser probability plays out after all, Rhianna thinks, just before the final missile knocks her backward and blackness overwhelms her. Beneath the goblin, the ball of flame continues to burn, uncontrolled and quiescent.

Right. It will appear and attack on your next turn.

Are you sure? This says it acts immediately on my turn: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells---final/summon-monster-i. "This spell summons an extraplanar creature (typically an outsider, elemental, or magical beast native to another plane). It appears where you designate and acts immediately, on your turn."

Ftr1/Pal1 | LG | AC(19)17/14/16 | HP 18//18 | F+5,R+1,W+0 | Init+ 1 | Smite Evil 1/day

Lyria, IIRC the casting time is a full round, so it will appear next round. I think.

It appears at the end of your casting at next round and attacks immediatly but you can begins another casting at the same time it attacks

32/42 HP

Lyria feels her healing powers are not enough, and in any case would heal not only the group members, but also some of the foes which are hurt pretty badly. Repressing her own doubts, she starts casting a summoning spell, while preforming a short ceremony which involves lighting a small candle and lightening it while chanting some divine words. As the battle rages around her, she keeps casting, hoping for good.

Cast Summon Monster I

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

Round 5

  • 21+ Tika; Rd 3? outside cloud
  • 21- Kai; RIP
  • 20+ Orc; Senseless to due to Artival's spell
  • 20- Goblin; Magic Missiles against Rhianna (#3)
  • 19 Mahaffy; Go, dwarf, go!!
  • 18 Rhianna; unconscious
  • 14 Lyria; casting Summon Monster I
  • 13 Hill Giant;
  • 11 Artival;
  • 06+ Roylenna; Rd 3? outside cloud
  • 06- Ka'kara;

Wow, you guys have been busy -- I missed round 4 altogether! Mahaffy, I am in awe of your courage. *bow* Mr. DM, sir, on what round will Tika and Roylenna regain sufficient control of their limbs to be able to contribute to the fracas? By my count and your comment earlier, it seems that it should be next round. Is that correct?

The spell description is not entirely clear, but I'll say that you are correct. Roylenna and Tika will be able to act normally on round 6 (7 for Tika), which is next round.

    Male Dwarf Rogue 5

    'Nyah , nyah , nyah . can't hit me ! you big sissy !'

with this , Mahaffy will make use of his knowledge of acrobatics to dance before the giant while still striking him

    1d20 + 6 - 5 ⇒ (12) + 6 - 5 = 131d8 + 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + (3, 5) + 2 = 16

Combat log Combat Expertise -1to Hit + 1 Ac ; Fighting Defensively ( -4 To hit , + 3 AC with 3 levels of acrobatics) = -5 To Hit, + 8 AC vs the giant for a total of 25 AC

I hesitated to go full out but this tactic should be marginally better

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

The giant is furious at the sight of the dancing dwarf and swats him hard with his club for 18 points of damage. Heartened by this success he foolishly strikes again but is thwarted by Mahaffy's acrobatics (and probably wearied by his grievous wounds, too).

    Artival and Ka'kara are up.

    Ftr1/Pal1 | LG | AC(19)17/14/16 | HP 18//18 | F+5,R+1,W+0 | Init+ 1 | Smite Evil 1/day

Seeing the orc was no longer a current threat, the sorceror turns his attention to the large giant that was currently massacring his friends. He blasts the large creature with his bolt of lightning ability, then moves away from the monster's reach.

Attack then move back roughly 10' from original position to keep distance from the giant.

    Elemental ray ranged touch attack 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

    Damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

    Female Human Barbarian 7

Dropping the long-spear, Ka'kara reaches over her shoulder and pulls out her great-sword as she advances five feet up to the giants legs. Taking a mighty swing.....she bounces the sword harmlessly off of the giants protective hide armor.

    To hit: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16 Grrrr.....stupid dice roller.

    Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

    Bottom of Round 5

  • 21+ Tika; Rd 3? outside cloud
  • 21- Kai; RIP
  • 20+ Orc; Senseless to due to Artival's spell
  • 20- Goblin; Magic Missiles against Rhianna (#3)
  • 19 Mahaffy; Defensively dancing dwarf
  • 18 Rhianna; Unconscious
  • 14 Lyria; Casting Summon Monster I
  • 13 Hill Giant; Tags defensively dancing dwarf
  • 11 Artival; Lightning ray vs. giant
  • 06+ Roylenna; One more round!
  • 06- Ka'kara; Attacks giant

  • Rolling it now, since it looks like it will be needed when the time comes: Stabilization check (Constitution check, DC 10, with -1 penalty): 1d20 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (20) + 2 - 1 = 21 Yay! Stable!

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Ka'kara waves her spear around but seems to have trouble connecting with anything. Artival's bolt strikes the giant, and electricity sears and crackles.

The goblin looks nervously at Lyria as she weaves her spell and targets her with three more Magic Missiles for 9 points of damage, forcing a Concentration check (DC 20).

    Lyria and Mahaffy are up.

    Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)
    Black Tom wrote:

Somewhere in the back of your minds, you hear a familiar voice, "Go, Mahaffy, go! Go, Lyria, go! ;-)

Starting to feel like she might shake the nausea, Roylenna starts moving so she can see the attackers - and how her allies are holding up. (She's been staring at her shoes a lot for the last 30 seconds or so.)

    32/42 HP

Not much chance of making the DC 20 roll, but anyhow:
    Concentration: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22

    Wow, that was lucky:
Lyria's body is hit by another three missiles, but she grits her teeth and manages to stay concentrated on finishing the spell, finishing it with a shout: "Aquila!". An eagle appears next to the giant's head, and immediately starts pecking at its eyes and head frantically, ignoring the chaos around. Lyria herself, exhausted, waits for a few seconds until Mahaffy attacks the giant before deciding what to do next next action.

    Three eagle attacks:
    1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19, 1d4 ⇒ 2
    1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15, 1d4 ⇒ 1
    1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18, 1d4 ⇒ 1

Finished casting Summon Monster I, Delay standard action till after Mahaffy's attack - The idea is that the giant could get killed until then, so it's better to wait with the channel energy heal until then as it will affect the giant as well if he's alive.

    Female Human Barbarian 7
    Black Tom wrote:

Actually, she dropped that and drew her great-sword last round.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

    Just checking: is Lyria conscious?

    32/42 HP

On 0 hp, for the second time this fight. She'll heal herself after Mahaffy acts.

    Male Dwarf Rogue 5

Sorry guys but Mahaffy have had only 4 Hero Points while being with you

Mahally looks up at the giant and says : "My turn now"
    1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 251d8 + 2 + 2d6 ⇒ (2) + 2 + (3, 3) = 10

    32/42 HP

Did Mahaffy kill the giant? Waiting before I post.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Gritting her teeth through the pain Lyria manages to finish her spell and a golden eagle materializes and claws the giant in the face, drawing blood. Mahaffy takes advantage of the distraction and strikes the giant a devastating blow to the abdomen. Even though its furs absorb some of the force, it bleeds profusely and finally topples over, unconscious.

I can hear the cheering even as I type.

Lyria is up, then Roylenna, Ka'kara and Tika.

    Male Dwarf Rogue 5

If so , Mahaffy uses the rest of his actions to move toward his abandoned crossbow .

    Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)
    Lyria Ghoulbane wrote:

Doesn't sound like he's dead, but unconscious. I would make sure you are not close enough to heal him on accident, just in case. Just sayin'.

Roylenna, with a big shudder, finally regains control as her stomach settles down and moves up to 20' to get a view of the giant and the goblin, if possible. Seeing the giant down, she focuses her attention on the goblin.

"That was completely rude and unfair of you." And she casts her new spell, Scorching Ray.

Two ranged touch attacks for 4d6 fire damage, including Point Blank Shot:

    Attack #1: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
    Damage #1: 4d6 + 1 ⇒ (1, 2, 3, 6) + 1 = 13

    Attack #2: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
    Damage #2: 4d6 + 1 ⇒ (3, 1, 1, 1) + 1 = 7

    Wow that's a lot of 1's...

    Female Halfling Bard 1

Is the goblin still in the air by Tika's turn? Alao Was it not on a broom.

My interpretation is that you get one ray plus one ray for every four caster levels you have to a maximum of three rays (at eighth level). As you say, if that's wrong, at least the stinker roll goes by the wayside.

Reviewed the full description, and you are correct. One ray plus one ray per four levels after 3rd level. The abbreviated spell description I was working from neglected to include that important distinction. Sorry for the error, put it down to being excited to finally do something besides heave during the combat. ;-)

    32/42 HP

Lyria will Channel Energy after the giant falls.
    1d6 ⇒ 3 Heal for everyone.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Roylenna's burning ray hits the goblin squarely and it falls with a yelp, making a thudding sound as it hits the ground. The uncontrolled broom sails down and lands a little bit off.

Lyria's healing energy refreshes you all. Fortunately the giant stays down. You heave a collective sigh of relief as you pick up yourselves. Greta applauds you and lights a cigar before going to heal Ka'kara and Rhianna, stopping to kick the unconscious giant. "Nobody badmouths my beer", she grumbles.

You all get 800 xp and one hero point.

The giant wears a 100 gp gold bracelet, and the goblin has a masterwork (small) light crossbow with 10 bolts and a scroll of three spells (magic missile, shield and web, all at CL3). Then there is the broom of course. The orcs have just their longspears and their armor.

Greta seems intent on continuing on your way. What do you say?

    32/42 HP

"I believe we should bury Kai. He fought well", Lyria says, while remembering his stubbornness in attacking the giant immediately instead of waiting for her charm spell.

If no one objects, Lyria will start digging a grave for him next to the road, or gather stones for a cairn.

She also has enough xp to level to 3. I'll level her up later when we rest.

    Male Dwarf Rogue 5

Let's have some more healing also if possible . Any attacks now , we would be toast.

    Ftr1/Pal1 | LG | AC(19)17/14/16 | HP 18//18 | F+5,R+1,W+0 | Init+ 1 | Smite Evil 1/day

"I agree with Mahaffy, I could use a bit of healing myself," says Artival still wincing from the shot he took from the orc.

I will level Artival this evening.

    Female Halfling Bard 1

Tika goes about collecting the gear from the fallen enemies whilst attempting to write notes at the same time.

How much xp is it to make it to lvl 3?

    Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

"Wow, that was terrible! That nasty cloud - I could not see a thing and then I was so sick, it was all I could do to stumble out to the fresh air. It is all a blur for me... it looks like the giant must have been quite a fight." Looking around from her location near the back of the wagon, "Um, where is the man with the tattoos?" When she finally spots him lying behind the giant's prone form, her eyes widen and she looks away, "No, no, no! Not again!"

Roylenna assists Tika in gathering up gear, but she stays away from the dead warrior, unable to bring herself to look at him again.

"I think we are the only ones that can easily use this," holding up the Small crossbow, "but I suspect you are a better shot than I. Do you want it?" Roylenna would have a +8 to hit within Point Blank Shot range, but she rarely uses a weapon at all, so you are welcome to it if you want it.

Her Heavenly Fire is available for healing, but it's a pretty small boost, so I'm inclined to hold it for a) end of day or b) crisis moments when we need ranged healing right now. If you would rather have her 1d4+2 of kindness now, let me know.

She would like to look over the broom. Given the opportunity for the distraction, she will cast Detect Magic and study the magical auras emanating from the broom to see if she can figure out how it works. Spellcraft 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Note that Bombur will start at 5009 xp, and that is also the minimum for the rest of you. In case Tika, for instance, has less xp, you're entitled to add whatever is missing (for writing a song about your exploits or whatever). That should put everyone at at least level 3. Also nothing remarkable happens during the rest of the day, and Greta will help patch you up, so let's just say that you are all fully healed and have had the leisure to level up. Fast-forwarding to Seahill where you meet one really ugly dwarf with a mission.
