Questions about how to playtest

Advanced Player's Guide Playtest General Discussion

I will be running a playtest this upcoming Monday, and have a few questions, as I want to give you the best results.

-Should I only allow the new classes, or should one or two of the players play a standard core class?

-Should I only allow material out of the core rulebook, or could I use old WoTC material, or some of the things from the Pathfinder Campaign Setting, for example? I have a player who lives and breathes Psionics, can I allow that?

-I was thinking of running a Pathfinder Module. Should my report give a minute by minute response, or something a little more brief? For example, do you want to know dice roll numbers or just that someone succeed, or even less info than that?

-How much detail do you want about each characters' stats?

-I have invited 6 players, is that too many?

-Should I allow multiclassing?

-Should I allow more than one player to play the same class as another?

-Should I allow prestige classes, at least from the core book?

Thank you!

this is by NO means an official answer, but I would think ;

1.I'd allow amix of existing and playtest. I'd think they want to see the two working together.

2. I'd probably limit is to Pathfinder products (core book, campaign setting, etc..) and leave the WotC stuff out. It might skew the results.

3. In general I'd try to be as specific as you can with your play test. It might not be reasonable to record all your rolls unless the players are down for it, but a audio recording will do wonders for your accuracy if you have people say what they roll.

4. I'd have a stat block for everyone, at least, and gear.

5. 6 players is fine and well, just remember to figure in your APL.

6. Multiclassing is fine, they want to see all the tweaks, I'd allow it.

7. Prestige Classes should be fine, they want you (I'd think anyway) to work out all the kinks, and the only way to do that is to play with everything available.

I think one of the best ways to playtest is to mix core and new classes. If you see how the summoner performs while standing next to a druid for instance, you have a better idea then if it was just new classes. Maybe they all suck, maybe they are all overpowered, its hard to tell. But if you see existing classes performing in the same situation, you are much better off (in my opinion).

I would only allow the core rules for a playtest, as WoTC stuff is 3rd party. You cant really expect paizo stuff to be balanced against it. That requires the dms judgement when they allow 3rd party stuff in.

I would try to limit the overlap of the same class, just for good party dynamics. But it is possible to perhaps have 2 different oracles that dont overlap much, so its worth considering at least.

And definately allow prestige classes from the core. They are part of the game. maybe someone wants to go summoner in to dragon disciple, it should be looked at just as much as summoner on its own. PrC's are part of the game so they should be part of the playtest.

We don't need a blow-by-blow—just a summary of what you thought worked especially well—or especially poorly—in as much detail as you need to communicate it.

As far as what other material you use, don't feel you have to restrain yourself. While using only core materials might help simplify issues, these classes are supposed to work well with other well-designed materials.
