...I wanna play the eidolon!
Anyone else with me?
This "build your own monster" concept of the thing is just so awesome, and the abilities available for "purchase" are so cool, i'd rather just play the eidolon and not even worry about the summoner!
I mean, heck, my first impression looking at it, the eidolon on its own merits could create a fairly solid character/monster, let alone with a magic user to back it up.

While it's a big beefy monster, you don't want you actual PC subject to BANISH. also at low levels the summoner is, IMHO anyhow, what balances the class, because he's gonna be the target. Your summoned beast might be big and mean, but when the BBEG wizard throws a scorching ray right past your buddy and nails you in the face you lose.

Maybe even better: A Summoner who is so dumb (Int 3-4) that the Eidolon is the one who calls the shots. When it's around, of course. I can just envision the poor Summoner at a loss when his big buddy disappears and he can't bring him back 'till tomorrow... 8^)
(Yeah, I know it's probably not an optimal build, but could be fun to play, in the right game.)

I love this idea! That would be a really cool concept to play and the RPing gold that would be created would make any lose in power a moot point to me.

Makes me think of a near epic-level paladin one of my friend had. The 'main' character was of course the horse, with his delusional sidekick hero (the human). He basically simply swapped the paladin and the horse's 'shapes' but kept all the stats intact (and changed the fluff of 'hooves' as daggers of whatever). When not 'summoned' the human was simply a worthless chauvinistic idiot who'd come up with the stupidest reasons not to participate (messy hair, not challenging enough, may make him dirty...) Of course, he'd be totally unaware that his horse was anything more than a nag.
but back on topic, I'm not sure if loosing focus from the character and emphasizing a (relatively) disconnected class feature is a good thing. It seems to me that it is moving away from the whole 'make a character and make him evolve through adventures' concept that is fundamental to RPGs and D&D specifically.

I am unabashedly and blatantly stealing this character concept. Thanks!

Ever read the dying earth series? Theres a whole sequence where 'powerful wizards and sorcerors' are totally reliant on the prowess of their conjured/summoned partners. You might want to read it to get some inspiration on how to play that kind of character.

Way ahead of you. I already have the concept.
The summoner is called Vox Anarchis (the voice of anarchy) and is played completely passive. The real shot caller is The Anarchon (CN serpentine Eidolon that will be a lot like a protean).
That idea has been around for quite some time, but until now, it couldn't be done out of the box.

That is kinda the point with this class.. you ARE playing the monster. The monster is really mostly superior to the PC...
At least, that was the dynamic we were shooting for.

A lot of people are seeing the PC as being the Summoner and that is the wrong mindset with this class, IMO. To me you are playing the Eidolon as the PC and the actual Summoner is the cohort/npc/whatever.

Gasp! Paizo introduces monsters as PCs! Dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria!

I don't think either way is wrong. The game system supports both - heck, if you were so inclined you could even split up the one "character" between two players.

LOL...I actually spent most of last night charting out a Protean type serpentine Eidolon ;)
