Half-Dragons gain a breath weapon, which deals "1d6 hit points of damage per racial HD possessed by the half-dragon". However, most humanoid creatures, including all PC races, have no racial HD. Using Goblins as a base (because that's the first I flipped to), it says "Goblins are defined by their class levels--they do not possess racial Hit Dice."

Does this mean that half-dragon humanoids do not gain a breath weapon? Or do they have one that's based on their class levels?

I realize I could play it either way, I'm just somewhat curious what the designer's intent was with this.

I would rule they get one, but it would be the minimum 1d6 and nothing more, just like an undead creature "gets" at least one racial hit die during creation. Although as written they would technically get none.

I am curious as well, it looks as if there is a crack-down on half-dragons. It is well-known that several Paizo editors are weary of half-dragons ;>

As written goblins, humans and every other humanoid without racial HD will not be getting a breath weapon. If you want a breath weapon you are better off as a sorcerer with a draconic bloodline?

Or converting the Dragonfire Adept over to PF rules.

You have to remember, the Paizo guys wrote the book as a Monster book, not a character book (just ask them, they'll respond in four part harmony on that point) ;).

That means the rules are specified in a manner appropriate to monsters. I don't think Jason or James would want a Half-Black Dragon/Half Noble Drow to not get a breath weapon to be used against the PC's. ;) And I think it would do damage based on the hit dice of the monster. That's part of the half-dragon templates +CR adjustment.

If they don't have racial HD (like Minotaur) then they don't have a Breath Weapon.

I'm just glad for the logical change that was made to half-dragons: no matter the size, they get wings!

I always thought the breath weapon was weak when applied to a human, elf, dwarf, etc anyway.
