Intimidate: Demoralize

Rules Questions

Grand Lodge

In general, does the "try again" rules apply regardless if the original attempt was successful or not? Specifically, if you succeed on an intimidate attempt to demoralize an opponent, does the +5 apply to the DC if you attempt to demoralize the same opponent the following round? Or does the DC stay static until you fail?

Trying to send the poor goblins running home crying to mommy? You big bully... :P

The text is pretty straightforward in that subsequent attempts are harder, with no regard to past success or failure. This makes sense to me. Even if you make me tremble in my boots to start, eventually the intimidations come across more as bluster than actual threats.

Note that if you CAN pull this off, it might be worth it. Three successful demoralize checks in a row (presuming that the duration lasts long enough, or from multiple sources in a single round) will stack. Shaken leads to Frightened which leads to Panicked (which leads to hate, which leads to the Dark Side, who have cookies).

Cookies!!! Really? Time for an alignment change, lol.

This part is not actually true as per the core rulebook:

Core Rulebook wrote:
Using demoralize on the same creature only extends the duration; it does not create a stronger fear condition.

This is found under the demoralize section of the intimidate skill. The DC to intimidate will still increase by 5 though even on successes.

Yeah, demoralizing doesn't stack in terms of severity, only in duration. There are a couple exceptions to this, such as the Soulless Gaze feat.

I think, or hope, that after six years, the OP will have realized this.

Please check dates before you reply.
