Hey there everrrrrybody.
What's up with item cards? How would a DM use them? Would a DM need to buy several packs of cards to be sure they had enough variety? Have other DMs succesfully incorporated them into their games? What's that been like?
I'm really diggin' the CoT item cards that have been released and want to incorporate them into my game. I was thinking about just getting that pack of cards, but at the same time, I feel like I still would need more. Not that I'm complaining, just trying to figure them out.

Here's how I use them. Prior to a session, I pick out all the item cards that I want to hand out. (I don't have out cards for every item encountered; usually just the magical stuff.) For magical items, I write the item name on the back of the card in pencil, and a link to the book it came from; ie DMG 375 (Dungeon Master's Guide pg 375). Then, I cut on a small piece of paper and tape it over the item description, and on that small piece of paper I write (for example) "Strong abjuration".
When the players receive the cards they are 1) delighted, and 2) looking forward to tearing off the taped piece of paper to discover what they've found!

Neat!
How does the pencil erase? Does it get all smudgy?
I have been using pencil on my cards and they erase pretty well, Now I am using a #2 and not something stronger, so your mileage may vary. I also ask my players to write lightly. And I bought a really good eraser. If you push down too hard, it does leave light grooves on the card.
I have heard that other people get really inexpensive card sleeves like these from Ultra Pro and then write on the card sleeve with a sharpie. When the campaign is done, they throw the sleeve away.

I hadn't thought of that! I will have to share my small horde of those with my DM as we have been trying to figure something out with writing on them as well.
I commonly see those sleeves used by game stores for writing ridiculous numbers in sharpie on collectible card game Rares in the display cases.
"$200? Is that in Pesos? Does it include the sleeve?"

I never actually wanted to write on the cards, so I went straight for the sleeves. I've tested them with a Sharpie and it works well. I also bought a few of those plastic sheets with pockets for cards so that the players don't end up with a thick stack of cards to try to keep track of.

I love this sleeve idea. Actually, I just saw some people using this concept on their character sheets the other day at my FLGS.
They simply kept a character sheet in a clear page protector and used dry or wet erase markers to mark temporary information (HP loss, etc) on the sheet.
I think I might try out these cards with the sleeves... sounds like an easy way to manage them.
