Could Paizo come up with something new? Or mix up the cover art a bit? I'm already sick of looking at the iconic characters.
And could someone please fix Sajan's sword? I suspect the shape of the blade doesn't really match anything in history, though I am hardly an expert on the matter and certainly could be wrong. It doesn't look like a kukri, it doesn't look like an Indian temple sword, so what is it?

Boo! :p
I'm sorry, but I love the iconics, better than totally random characters, because random characters won't always be as Golarion, as well-envisioned, as detailed or as recognisable as the Iconics.
And why would Sajan's sword have to even look like anything historical, its exotic and different, isnt that kind of the point? If not of monks, certainly of Sajan.
How historical looking is Merisiel's ears? Or any of Lini?
Generic Villain |
How's about this, then? I think Sajan's sword looks kind of dumb, impractical and that it looks like it's about to break the moment he hits something with harder than a loaf of bread.
While I actually agree with you about the overuse of iconics, and the visual fatigue that it causes, if you want to point out everything in a fantasy world that is "dumb and impractical", the list would be near-endless. Especially if you're talking about absurd looking weapons.

One of the reasons I like the cover illustration of "Entombed with the Pharaohs" is the cool-looking PC on the cover.
Really, I'd like to see a "second string" of characters: a ranger specializing in to-weapons, a half-orc, a fighter specializing in mounted combat, a teen-ager, an illusionist, a psionic, etc.

Have you seent he covers for Legacy of Fire? Not one Iconic as the main large figure. Yes, they are scattered throughout the interior art scenes, but usually only one or two.

Interesting ... I need to look that up ... any links?
(BTW I do generally love that art!)

That is a good backstory but I still feel the sword is not drawn correctly for a Frost Giant's bastard sword ... but thats personal taste I suppose.

I've been pretty happy the majority of Pathfinder art, and I like seeing the iconics in the artwork. The fact that there were still Paizo board regulars that didn't recognize Seltiyel, for example, I thinks shows that the iconics are still pretty fresh, overall.
As to Sajan's sword, or Amiri's, I like both of them personally, and the look of all of the iconics are pretty interesting. If I was going to quibble about a sword, it would probably be Seltiyel's strange longsword, but even that really doesn't bother me that much.

I love the iconics. That Final Fantasy sword does bug me though.
Looks much more like Guts' sword from Berserk then Cloud's. As well Guts came around in the early 90's while Cloud and gang was late 90's. But noooooooo. It's always Final Fantasy >_<
... Guts does it better too >_>
ASIDE from me whining like a 10 year old girl (I actually like the big sword just for the record) I would like to see them expand on the pictures they've used in the Prestige Class Beta they released. We already got Seltyiel as the Eldricht Knight but why not look at the others? They'd still be kind of iconic too if they were just given a name and a write up.
You have at LEAST a human duelist (fighter slot), half-orc assassin (rogue), elf Arcane Archer (ranged kinda slot), and then throw in the mystic thurge or something (don't remember what that one looked like).

It might be fun for Wayfinder, or other 3rd party Pathfinder products, to create '13th Iconics,' so to speak.
A Wayfinder 'iconic party' consisting of;
Brand the Wizard,
Hazhi-Awass, Cleric of Pharasma,
Kem-Kepi, Tomb Raider
and either Tarlan the Monk or Ka'kara Furyheart, the Barbarian in the Fighter role would be pretty sexy.

I like the iconics, and I love WAR's stuff in general, but I had hoped that we'd get new illustrations of them for the PFRPG core book, rather than the same ones we've had since Pathfinder launched and they first appeared. They're recognizable and very good pictures, but I've seen them all plenty in my Beta, and it'd be nice to see all new art for the final product. It's not a big thing, but it's there.
And as for the barbarian's sword, one of my friends looked at her and said "what's an Exalted character doing in a D&D book?" Personally, I like it, but I like anime in my D&D, even if the general public cries foul whenever they see something like that (which saddens me to no end, especially since it means my art will never get published in a book I'd want to read...).
Disciple of Sakura |
Also, one thing I've noticed is that there isn't an iconic character with really big breasts. Please add one. One that makes Seoni look like a teenage boy.
I concur. Where's the Red Monicas or Scarlets or otherwise overly endowed rogue women who couldn't squeeze through tiny spaces to save their lives? :P
Zaister |
Besides, have you seen an Indian temple sword? They're strange looking, exotic and pretty thoroughly cool.
Funny, if I do an image search on Google for "temple sword", the second hit is the picture of Sajan. :)

Put me down for sick of the iconics.
Well, Valeros and Seoni, mostly. The others are okay.
If frustrates me that the ones who are most cliché are the most visible. And they are cliché, those two. Valeros may be one of the most detailed Male Human Fighters I've seen, but he's still a Male Human Fighter. Likewise for the Buxom Half-naked Sorceress.
I'm not taking issue with the fact that they exist, or that they are iconics, but they get far too much screen time compared to the other iconics. I know rabid Seoni fans will tear me apart, but I advise them to procure a Playboy subscription and keep their creepy stalker habits away from the game table. She's okay, but the game is not about her.
Anyway, I'm not asking for Paizo to change course, just add a few new faces to the mix, slowly, over time. I prefer they do this by introducing more base classes, therefore more iconics, and then using them!
But yes, it has stared to wear me down.

If we ever get around to doing any more core classes, we will have new iconics for each. I will do my best to get a half-orc in there.
--Erik
PS: Don't expect too many new core classes.
First off, let me saw that the Pathfinder iconics do look better overall than the 3.5.
That said, I'd actually forgotten the characters used for the prestige classes. Why not use them in more of the game art? It'd mix it up some. The only one I recall seeing used is the creepy half-elf eldritch knight.KaeYoss |

Sorry, I only buy off-brand wizards. Same spellpower for less gold pieces. All you really pay for is the fancy logo and the "we're from the coast so you know we're better than you" slogan.

Using two-weapon fighting. Never before seen constellation.
Don't be racist against male humans. I happen to be one, and if you have a problem with it, I'll pack a strong electro-magnet and come over to do some non-volatile reprogramming on you. }>
Likewise for the Buxom Half-naked Sorceress.
Yeah, let's see an ugly, buttomed-up sorceress. Of course, she wouldn't have powers, but if she gets the run feat, she might catch Rincewind and marry him! :P

Well, she sells. Will you reimburse Paizo for lost sales because of more boring iconics? Or pay me back the extra money I'd have to pay for my PF stuff when they sell less because of your crusade and Paizo has to increase the prices?
Didn't think so. I guess you'll have to get over the fact that you're not pretty enough to have thousands of gamers like you.
Anyway, I'm not asking for Paizo to change course, just add a few new faces to the mix, slowly, over time.
Yeah! My votes:
I prefer they do this by introducing more base classes, therefore more iconics, and then using them!
I don't want PF to be flooded with thousands of base classes.

I like the iconics. I also like the artwork to fire my imagination, so some scenes with 'unkown' or 'new' character artwork would be very welcome! It's fun to see art that makes you say 'I wan't to create a character like that'!
Also agree with the iconic art for the PFRPG. Obviously too late for any changes, but I hope they used new art rather than reprint the same ol pictures we see every month in Pathfinder, in the campaign setting, etc..

For those complaining about Amiri's Sword, there is actually a story about it, you can read it here.
I believe her early stats in the Adventure Paths actually reflect that she is wielding an over-sized weapon.
Thing I don't remember is if the Art came before the story, or the story before the art.

The Indian temple swords linked above look more like the description of the Osirioni khopesh, from the Campaign Setting.
I want to see an Iconic Shoanti (Ranger or Barbarian?) dual-wielding Klar, perhaps with Shoanti bola at his belt. Klar look cool!
I wouldn't mind also seeing some artistic representations of the Bich'hwa and Flying Talon, from the Campaign Setting.

A point by point response.
I really don't disagree with anything there.
I don't want to see thousands of base classes either. I think there are a few concepts that could fill out the roster, nothing to go crazy with.
My preferred solution is to use the other iconics more. I think they actually DO this, but I am biased because I am running Runelords and so I'm looking at the early stuff most often. Even so, seeing Seoni and Valeros on the cover of the campaign setting AND the RPG miffed me a bit.
I'm not spitting mad about it, but I do think they should use the others some more.
And I was promised a Half-orc assassin. Maybe not promised... but I wish I was promised.

There is a half-orc assassin. He's in the PRPG core rulebook. And if I'm not mistaken, will be previewed in KQ10, which should be coming out soon. I believe it's the same art as was in the beta prestige enhancement, just colored in and finished and all that.

I thought the preview was going to be of the shadowdancer.
