This is insane. Badgers are critical. Get rid of dwarves if you need the space. Those weirdos suck, anyway.
They're dwarves, i.e. "demi-humans", and as such second class citicens behind real humans.

True, Elves suck.

In cases where there's not really a clear or obvious real-world primeval critter (such as the case with the dire bat) we generally just call it a dire bat. There might be a few exceptions, but none come to mind.
As for the badger... Faith Healer's right: we don't need no stinkin' badgers!
NOTE: Just because an animal doesn't show up in the Bestiary doesn't mean it can't be an animal companion supported by the Core Rulebook... the animal companion rules are actually pretty awesome that way!
Does this mean that Badger and Dire Badger have been pulled off of the Summon Lists?

Only the gnomes do that. They decorate your lawn. With pitfalls and booby traps and sharpened spikes coated with poison. And vorpal rakes for you to step on.
How are they laughing at your misfortune!

I was really hoping for this and I thought there were hints, but this spoiler makes my day. Well, okay, after the preview pics...it gives the afternoon a boost!
This preview made my day as well. Especially after sanding one of my bedrooms in preparation for tomorrow's priming and painting, followed by scooping rotting leaves and "growing" plants out of my gutters with MY BARE HANDS... [shudders at how much gutters can smell like sewers...]

But the creature's supposed to be a fungus. They may share a creature type in D&D, but they're not the same thing.
The art screams "plant", is what I'm saying. The fleshiness of the "mouth" resembles a venus fly trap, and the tentacles and feet are more like roots and vines than hyphae. I'm glad the basidrond is in the book... but the art is not my favorite.

Well... there's nearly 300 pieces of art in the book by dozens of artists. Chances are good for everyone that there'll be some art that doesn't appeal, so in that regard, I suppose the first art preview is accurate.

Hopefully the Dire Boar art will show it chasing kittens, for fairness sake ;-)

Or maybe chasing Asterix and Obelix!

Thanks for the reply. Might I inquire as to the reason they were dropped? Was it a space consideration?
I'm curious to their absence, since they pop up as summoned creatures pretty regularly at my table, as well as the rare times I get to I run a wizard.
This could also lead to the loss of stinkin' badger jokes at the table as well, which is nearly as great a loss.

It was because of space issues.. and it came down to the badger or the wolverine...
Being from Wisconsin.. I wanted the badger, but got vetoed by my boss, from Minnesota.
Grr...

Thanks. I suppose we'll have to make do by upgrading the wolverine's stats a bit to make it badger level standards.
On a side note, I bleed purple and gold myself, but always had a soft spot for the Badgers.

PFRPG gnomes can speak with any animal now, not just burrowing mammals, so there's no real need for a specific niche creature at low level to make gnome players happy. Any animal works for them.
Also, as Jason said, it's a space issue; wolverines are more fun to fight than badgers, and badgers are probably too tough to be familiars, so they fell into a weird dead zone there.

As Chairbadger of the Badger's Ancient Brotherhood (BAB), I was disappointed to hear badgers would not be represented in the upcoming Pathfinder Bestiary. However, I am heartened to hear your compliment that badgers are simply too tough to be a part of the Pathfinder RPG. With this goodwill in mind, we will simply be content to wait for a future Epic level supplement, where badgers can be properly stated to challenge even the most ridiculously overpowered adventurer.
Thanks,
Sowhereaminow
P.S. We also enjoy smacking around wolverines, and agree it is a lot of fun doing so, particularly when they whine about being misrepresented in some movie from May 2009...

My avatar change was a prediction of the future!
I am sorry to see the badger go, but the 3.5 rules should be sufficient to bring the little guy back, if one wanted to do that.
Are you implying this rubbish I keep hearing bandied about that PFRPG will be backwards compatible? They got rid of "cure minor wounds" and replaced it with "stabilize"! How can it ever be BC enough to handle a 3.5 badger!?

At least he didn't (he didn't did he?) insert a gopher instead. That'd be worse than a badger.

There are a handful of regular gamers that I game with. I am currently running a d20 modern homebrew and Curse of the Crimson Throne (converted to Iron Heroes). A couple of the others run their own house games - everything from Amber to Marvel Saga to Shadowrun to heavily house ruled d20 settings.Unfortunately, real life has been getting in the way. Games are increasingly becoming ever other week games instead of weekly games. Still, you game when you can.

Running a Pathfinder Beta Rise of the Rune Lords game myself - and real life has made it hard to get together regularly. As in May was the last session.
Been thinking about organizing some Society games, but wasn't sure if there were enough Pathfinder players here in town. Either that, or a finding a second group to join as a player - no one else in my core group has the time to DM.
Going to start a Baton Rouge Pathfinder Thread in the Gamer Connection section of the Message Boards. Please join me there.

I'm really hoping the monsters used for the PFS scenarios make it into the Bestiary (like Hou's Medusa did!). I'm especially hopeful that Tyler Walpole's Xill & Bone Devil are in there. And anything else he might have contributed.
And if the karma gods are good to me, Andrew Hou illustrated the new Nymph ;-)
Always good to see Kieran Yanner, too. I'm only familiar w/ his b/w artwork, mainly from Malhavoc Press.
This could be the best illustrated bestiary D&D has ever had (crosses fingers).
