Hello,

This question may have been tackled elsewhere on the forums, apologies if this is a repeat question.

Is there any plan for Pathfinder Society or Pathfinder RPG launch events at GenconOz 2009?

Here is a link to the shows official site for those interested:

Gencon Oz 2009 .

Thanks in advance

I hope it does get organised for there. I will be there with bells on!

Never been to Brisbane before, don't know anyone in Bris I can stay with, had dismissed GenConOz due to moving house at the moment, but hey, it would be good? I'd just have to check out the cost/logistics of everything.

I've just checked out the GenConOz website, and a cursory glance at airfares - accommodation is currently the unknown factor.

I've run Pathfinder Society scenarios at Unicon, Arcanacon and Conquest (as well as my home group) in Melbourne, I'd love to give GenConOz a try. Happy to team up with other Pathfinder Society GMs if anyone is up for it?

No promises, it is a big commitment, but I'm looking into it ...

Lantern Lodge 4/5

Was just on the phone to Deluge (long-time LA GM and good friend who also ran some Pathfinder at the above-mentioned Melb conventions), he also sounds interested, and we might enquire among some others in our circle if anyone interested in attending GenConOz.

So, again, no promises yet, there's still a lot to organise, but at least some of us are looking into the possibility. But as we only have until the end of May to get event submissions in, not to mention arrange flights and accommodation, we'll have to organise ourselves quickly.

Cheers :-)

Cool!

I am in Rockhampton... up in Central Queensland aways from Brisbane.
Check out Tiger airline. Cheap as tickets.. $65 to Rockhampton from Melbourne and I am guessing Brisbane should be similar.

The event is close to the city and you can get the train cheaply for the days the event is on. Look at Brisbane city backpackers as it will be the cheapest you can get that is close. It is well worth getting accommodation in the CBD as it will save you money and time.

I am not a PF GM but I DM up here for my group. I use 3.5. I am very interested in playing and I am happy to help with organisation of event before and during the days.

I am planning on being at GENCON but I have to clear it with my wife first - non gamer. :)

If I can be of help please do not hesitate to ask.

~Sigh~

Brisbane, again? Don't get me wrong, Brisbane is a great city, but haven't the organisers ever heard of Sydney? ;-)

Scarab Sages 1/5

The venue is awesome and it was packed last year.

Someone got GENCON and it was Brisbane. :P

Team Full Power attack may be interested, both as GMs and Players. We have other friends attending Gencon so also want to catch up with them.

We are somewhat disappointed with it being in Brisbane again, as we are Sydneysiders :) But we used to travel lots for LG, including the last Gencon, (heck we went to Melbourne to play an untested campaign for 4 days lol) so chances are we may go this year if Pathfinder is featuring for a sizeable chunk of it - and are happy to contribute.

Perhaps accommodation could be organised in a group thing Stephen? perhaps a furnished apartment near the entertainment centre or something?

Last time we crashed with an LGer, but that community died with LFR...

Just a heads up, it is an expensive trip, food/sundry costs are big, especially if you go to after con dinners/etc. But it is totally worth it.

- Metz, who likes the idea of 3-4 folk renting a serviced apartment more and more

The only thing I can add is that if there is going to be Pathfinder then someone has to register the details soon. Online rego for the event goes live in 9 or so days.

Extended until end of May, but yeah. I'll likely do it, I've registered Pathfinder for three prior conventions in Melbourne, so I'm familiar with the routine. But I do need to look into travel/accommodation matters and who may be travelling with me first.

While I hope someone local will run some Pathfinder Society events, we won't be attending the show and thus can't insure events will be run. Go-go local volunteers!

I will put my hand up to help... but I hope that means I can play. I have never played RPG at a convention before.

Lantern Lodge 4/5

Hi all,

I have started registering events for GenConOz, 18th-20th September 2009.

I have a few questions for Josh or someone in the know ...

As GenConOz runs a mere month after GenCon(USA) and the August release of the new Pathfinder RPG core rules, I'm a little concerned that players may not have had an opportunity to purchase the rules yet (also considering notorious under-estimation of orders such as this, and overseas shipping times). I'm hoping there will be vendors at GenConOz selling the new release rules, but I have no influence over such things.

I note that Paizo will be running events at GenCon(USA). Considering these are both GenCon events running a month apart from each other, would it be advisable to run the same scenarios at GenConOz as are being run at GenCon(USA)? Will these be available for download immediately after their run at GenCon(USA)? I need to know the titles of scenarios I'm registering to run at GenConOz. (I think all Season 0, and initial Season 1 scenarios were posted somewhere for purposes of convention registrations, but I can't seem to locate these, could anyone help with a link?)

What scenarios would players like to play? The new Season 1 scenarios? Or some older Season 0 ones? Talking to Deluge who ran Living Arcanis scenarios at GenConOz 2008, he said GenConOz attracted a large number of new players, so I'm guessing we'll see a large number of never-before-played-Pathfinder players.

Would it be advisable to offer a "conversion" session as the first time-slot? I think this is being offered at GenCon(US).

It has been said that pre-gen characters will be available at GenCon(US), particularly to allow for higher tier one-shot characters - could these pre-gens please be made available to others running Season 1 events?

Would players like a "dinner" or social meet-up session outside of gameplay? Or do you prefer to "get wrecked" with back-to-back game sessions?

Thanks for any advice you're able to provide.

Cheers,
DarkWhite

Excellent!

Thanks for organising!

I will be in attendance at Gencon. I am welling to be a dogbody... help anyway. I would also like to give con play a go!

About the rule release, Milsims is expecting their shipment of the new rulebook to arrive in early September, a couple of weeks after the official release.

Let me know if I can be of assistance any way.

Of course you'll be welcome to play! Though I'd recommend signing up so you don't miss out. I'll try to post here to let everyone know as soon as I'm aware my sessions are available for sign-up on the GenConOz website. I can only guarantee one table per session (eg, six players). Other GMs might volunteer their time, but as of this moment, I can only speak for myself. Those six spaces per session are likely to book out fast (particulary considering the hype surrounding Pathfinder RPG's August release).

Thanks for the offer to volunteer as a helper. It would be great to have assistant GMs to run more tables, but you sound like you prefer the other side of the GM screen, which is good too :-)

Past experience running conventions, I really encourage new players to the game, but it's really useful for another player to assist them with their questions, as I've usually got so much other stuff to focus on getting the game running.

Another thing that's really helpful for a GM during a con, is for players to offer to run to the canteen and grab a meal or drink during the breaks between sessions while the GM is still tied to the table doing paperwork, answering questions or organising the next game.

Really, either of these are tasks that any player can help out with. You don't have to be a specially assigned "helper" to do these, and you can still join in the game, you don't have to sacrifice your session.

Do you know if Milsims will be having a vendor's stall set up at GenConOz? (I'd be surprised if they, or some other retailer, didn't take advantage of this opportunity) If so, it might be useful to mention that Pathfinder sessions will be running at GenConOz, so they might anticipate a need for Pathfinder RPGs over that weekend.

Lantern Lodge 4/5

At local Melbourne conventions, it has been sufficient just to report sessions as generic Pathfinder Society, without having to specifically list which scenario is being run in which session.

GenConOz, however, seems a lot more strict about reporting specific session titles etc.

I would be most comfortable running scenarios I've already run, some of which I've run a few times now, and are very familiar with. I am aware of Pathfinder Society games having been run at Melbourne conventions, and groups existing in Sydney, but I haven't heard much happening in Brisbane, and GenConOz reportedly attracts a wider audience, including families and first-time RPGers, so I don't think there's any harm running Season 0 scenarios I'm familiar with.

However, that depends on how much demand there is for the new stuff? I would like to run #29 The Devil We Know Part 1: Shipyard Rats; and #30 The Devil We Know Part 2: Cassomir's Locker, because a) they're new Season 1 Pathfinder RPG scenarios; b) they're a two-part series! The only disadvantage is finding the time to playtest them in the brief time between their release at GenCon(US) but prior to GenConOz.

Of course I might just have to report what scenarios I think I'll be running, but be prepared to swap them out on the day with something else, depending on character levels, which scenarios players at the table have already played, and which scenarios I'm prepared to run?

Scarab Sages 1/5

Just got clearance from the wife :)

I will sort out my rego tomorrow. Happy to help anyways... DM up here and I have been itching to play. 3.5 or Pathfinder it is all good.

I will just have to wipe up a character :)

I will ask. Not many shops stock lot of Pathfinder... well actually there are a few but not alot of variety.

There will be a contingent of Geelong Pathfinders in attendance. I'll let them know you are looking for volunteers.

Yes, as your show will happen before the September scenarios come out.

Yes, the Monday after in fact.

Email me. josh@paizo.com. I'll get you the information you need for registration--though, if you're running the same scenarios as Gen Con US, then go to gencon.com and search for "Paizo" events and you'll find them there. We're running the four August scenarios and two previous low-level scenarios that will be updated for PRPG.

I'll find a way to put them online so anyone can download them for use at a convention.

Thanks Josh, I will schedule the first session for this purpose. I was also hoping to leave one hour between scenarios to assist new players with character creation or converting exisiting players to the new rules (as I'm sure not everyone will turn up to the first session). But I'm also being advised by the GenConOz co-ordinator to schedule games to a three hour time-table so as not to overlap with other games *sigh*. I'm seeking further advice on this one.

Thanks, that would be awesome, and something I think would assist many GMs and players!

Awesome!

I can confirm that Milsims will not be at GenconOz. Something about price of stalls and costs.

Dark Archive 4/5

Well once I know what my uni/work schedule is like (will know in a couple of weeks) I will let you know if I am coming Stephen.

If I do I will definitely help out with the GMing.

Went to register for events... no events to register for atm.

When will they be up?

Masika wrote:

I haven't submit all my Pathfinder sessions yet. I was on the phone/email to other GMs/organisers over the weekend to ensure that 4th Edition D&D and Pathfinder games were all running on a common timetable with no overlap, so players can freely schedule their time between them. I also need to clarify a few other things before submitting the sessions, but it should be done within the next few days. I don't know the process, how long it takes after I've made my submission, before it's approved and published on the website for player registration.

In any case, I'll try to keep everyone informed. I haven't made any announcement yet, because I know it's not live yet.

I can confirm that there'll be three sessions per day, I'll be GMing all sessions, Deluge will be GMing another table for the first two sessions each day, and other GMs may be offering their services if available (thanks _metz_).

As GenConOz requires online submission for each session for allocation of table numbers, I suspect you'll see initial offerings, with other sessions added as GMs confirm their availability.

Cheers :-)

Lantern Lodge 4/5

While I think of it (and before I've finalised GenConOz scenario submissions), my current plan is to prepare scenarios that are available for Tier 1 characters first. I realise that some players have already burned through the first few levels, and might be looking for higher Tier scenarios for their characters. However, Brisbane is a new venue, and I'm anticipating a steady stream of new Society players.

Having said that, there should be two (or more) tables running per session, so there should be the capacity to run a low Tier table and a higher Tier table side-by-side if the need is there.

As I'm supposed to allocate scenarios by name to each session, I was wondering of those players here who are going to GenConOz, what is your current character level, which scenarios have you already played, and is there a particular scenario you're wanting to play?

I can't guarantee that I can accommodate all of your requests, and I do recommend bringing along a fresh 1st level character as a secondary option, should a table at your preferred Tier not be available for a particular session (and the launch of the new Pathfinder RPG rules is a good excuse to draft up a new character!) But forewarned is forearmed, and if I know there's a popular demand for a particular scenario, I'll certainly keep that in mind when choosing scenarios.

Cheers :-)

Scarab Sages 1/5

I will be playing a fresh brand new character.

I hope you load on the games Saturday and Sunday. The only way to get there for Friday is to take a sickie Friday. I do not understand why they do not put this event in the school holidays.

I've actually just been told that Thursday is also available for timetabling RPG events, although the venue will be closed to non-RPG events.

It makes it a bit tricky, because if I'm to hold a Pathfinder RPG conversion workshop/semininar, I would want that to occur in the very first session before any scenarios are run. But if that session is 1pm on Thursday afternoon (the first RPG timeslot), then I'm sure there will be many others in your situation, unable to attend. Serious gamers will book their annual leave days around a convention, but due to work/study/other commitments, not everyone can.

As for school holidays, I'm not sure, but don't the school holidays start the weekend of the GenConOz? When a looked up flights to Brisbane a couple of weeks ago, there was some discount promotion running for dates in the week prior to the convention, but not for dates after the convention, because airlines never discount flights during school holidays, because they have no trouble filling those seats at regular prices.

If that's the case, it might have made sense to run it Sat-Mon or Sat-Tues into the school holidays. But maybe those venue dates weren't available, or more expensive due to the school holidays? I dunno.

There will most definitely be games loaded on Saturday and Sunday. Three scenarios each day. I'm hoping to run The Devil We Know part 1 and 2 double on the weekend.

Scarab Sages 1/5

I can not be there Thursday.

I am a school teacher so... no annual leave. I am happy to go with the flow. Considering the age that the con is aim for 14-24, you would have thought the week after would have been a better time.

Class excursion maybe?

Spoiler:
(this, of course, being suggested by one who isn't responsible for supervision of said students let loose within Australia's largest games convention ;-)

Scarab Sages 1/5

LOL

If only. The Sunday games are a definate... I may play VtES Saturday.. Friday games are a maybe atm. If the program is bad for me... I may not go. These are theings I have to consider.

Lantern Lodge 4/5

Okay, I've just submit 16 x Pathfinder Society scenarios to GenConOz, plus a Pathfinder RPG Conversion & Creation seminar/workshop on Thursday.

These are Pending Event Approval - I don't know how long it takes for them to visible on the GenConOz website and become available for registration.

I've tried to provide a broad selection of scenarios, each one being run once only. Currently, two scenarios are being offered in the morning 9am-1pm and afternoon 2pm-6pm time-slots. One scneario is being offered in the evening 7pm-11pm time-slot. So you'll need to read and choose between them.

Each session has a four to six player table limit, so book early to play your preferred scenarios.

Good Luck! :-)

Lantern Lodge 4/5

Okay, here is a list of scenarios I've submitted to GenConOz and currently awaiting their approval. Notwithstanding any unforseen circumstances, I'm guessing these should be available for registration on the GenConOz website within the next few days, but I thought I'd get this list out there so early-birds can start planning their adventure path ...

The timing of the event is based on the start of the Queensland School Holidays. It was not a week later because that would clash with the AFL (Aussie Rules Football) Grand Final, and the week after that it would have clashed with the NRL (Rugby League Football) Grand Final.

As for Mil Sims not coming, its because the booth pricing for Gen Con is realistic and comparable to the likes of Toy Fair, Supanova and Egames Expo. Mil Sims always attend CanCon because their prices are below low. CanCOn can offer this because a) a not-for-profit club runs the event, b) they don't advertise and c) the guy running that event works (or did work) for the centre where its held and gets "mates rates" for the halls and FREE carpeting!

Otherwise can I catch up with you Thursday evening/Friday morning?

I guess.. just disppointed with some event kicking off Thursday - my bias. In hindsight, sensible timing... though Friday through Monday would have been better - for me anyways. :)

Lantern Lodge 4/5

Masika wrote:

Hi Masika,

I realise Thursday particularly isn't going to suit everyone, particiularly working folk, which I imagine would be a good number of attendees. However, I thought the Conversion workshop really needed to happen before any scenarios were run using the new rules, if it was going to happen at all. It won't be required for Pathfinder players, but it should be a useful and friendly exchange of ideas and information about the new rules. I'm hoping enough people will come along on Thursday to check it out.

If you can't make it to the Conversion workshop on Thursday, there are certainly other options:

[A] you could purchase a copy of the new rules prior to the convention (which I'd encourage everyone to do if they can), then I guess you can discover the differences yourself, and build a character to bring along to the event.

[B] There should be pre-gen characters available. Some people avoid pre-gen characters, as they prefer to build their own, but if someone doesn't have a character ready to run at the start of a game, I don't want one player holding everyone else up. Pre-gens are a quick way to jump in and start play straight away, and you're always free to customise a pre-gen to take in your own direction (eg, change Faction, swap a feat or weapon or spell etc) as long as it's done quickly so you're ready to start the game with everyone else.

I'd still encourage players to join the Pathfinder Society here on the Paizo website before the convention. I should have my netbook with me so that players can sign up on the day, but it saves a lot of time if this is already done. You don't need a character to join, your character gets added when I report your first game.

Masika wrote:

As you can see from the above schedule, I'll be running Pathfinder Society Scenario 03: Murder on the Silk Caravan on Thursday evening, so I'll be pretty busy. However, if you can make it to the venue before 7pm, register to come along and play, even if it's with a pre-gen character. Even if you throw away your pre-gen after your first game or two, seeing how other Pathfinder RPG characters play might inspire you to build a new character of your choice during a meal break between games. I'm sure there will be a lot of discussion among players during meal breaks about Pathfinder RPG character options.

Also, I'm sure there will be a lot of discussion on the Paizo boards here after the Pathfinder RPG release and GenCon USA in August that should help you out.

Spoiler:
Email sent to you ...

It's 1:30pm in Melbourne now, and event registration does appear to have gone live, as I notice the "Registrations Available" column against Pathfinder events are already being grabbed up!

So if you haven't already, please log onto registration.genconoz.com and register your Pathfinder sessions before they all evaporate!

There are no assurances though that we can accept them, and no events will be accepted after June 30th.

Thanks DarkDM, I look forward to meeting you at GenConOz.

I assume you've signed up for the Pathfinder RPG conversion seminar and Pathfinder Society #03 Murder on the Silken Caravan on Thursday?

When I first ran Silken Caravan for my home group, we had six players, average character level 2, but still found it a *very* challenging adventure - near TPKs in most encounters - and have therefore avoided running it for 1st level characters ever since.

However, Pathfinder RPG characters promise to be sturdier 1st level adventurers, so I thought Silken Caravan might be a good scenario to put this theory to the test.

Don't fear, though. I'm a very fair GM, and I'm not out to TPK anyone if I can help it. Silken Caravan is a fun, intriguing scenario I would like to have run more often. I'm very interested to see how it runs under the new rules.

The more, the merrier! Although I note that Silken Caravan already has 5 registered players on Thursday, so you'll need to book him in quick if he'd like to join you for that session.

Just found out that Thurday night's session is full.

He is still looking into things. I hope he can make the other sessions.
