[Useful Advice Series] What if he / she / it has an unbelievable AC?

General Discussion (Prerelease)

I would like to create a series of threads where players and DMs can exchange ideas on certain difficulties that arise when certain spells, abilities and powers become available to PCs and monsters.

What to do if he/she/it has an unbelievable AC?

Please make sure that you specify if your suggestion or solution comes from:

  • the beta;
  • the 3.5;
  • a splat book (and which);
  • a house rule;
  • a fuzzy interpretation.

Your suggestion or solution can be to even the odds, neutralize or even reverse that spell/ability/power. Feel free to be creative. Feel free to tell inspiring anecdotes.

I wish these threads to be useful for players who meet those chalenges and DM who try to entertain players who have access to these.

3.5/pathfinder: alchemist fire, AoE spells (fireball), maybe a web spell to slow them down some.

Touch attack spells and abilities.
Multiple "Aid Another" actions (possibly from summoned creatures).
Dex based poisons, Slow spells, and Combat Manuever Checks to knock them off a cliff :)

The Exchange

beta:

1. cause fear, fascinate, dominate, sleep, hold person, polymorph, anything that requires a will save

2. grapple, disarm (now he/she/it can't do anything), sunder (break armor/shield), continuous tripping

3. diplomacy, intimidate (many encounters are avoided by my Dwarven fighter wagging his bushy beard)

4. wall of fire, wall of force

5. fireball, black tentacles, other area spells

6. invisibility (can't attack what he/she/it can't see)

7. run

To give non-casters some touch attack options besides Achemistfire and Acid I might allow an energy weapon (or even a torch) to be used as a touch attack dealing only the energy damage (d6 or d3 for a torch). Basically, this is based on the reverse application of a touch attack spell used in combination with a natural attack or unarmed strike.

Possible abuses:

The same for natural weapons with an energy attack part, ex.: Small fire elemental(s) (summon nature’s ally II+) dealing d4 fire damage as a touch attack.

Long Range energy Attacks (flaming longbow).

Sneak touch attack dealing energy damage.

The same being applied to Holy or Axiomatic qualities.

Possible limits to application:

Attacks consider as improvised weapons: The -4 to hit might still be worth it depending on how high the AC is, no sneaking (or other precision bonuses), low crit. (20/x2) and weapon-linked bonuses not applicable (weapon focus, specialization, etc.).

Only allow energy damage.

What do you think?

Charm spells... we could all use a guardian with an insanely high AC (take that unfair DM!!!)

True strike, 3.x PHB or Pathfinder. A 1st level Sor/Wiz spell that grants a +20 insight bonus on the next (single) attack and eliminates miss chances for concealment. It's easy to enchant into magical items, too (even the Quickened version is a 5th level spell).

Example: bow of incredible accuracy; this +1 composite longbow is built to provide a +2 Str bonus on damage; in addition, the wielder can command a true strike effect 3x/day; Prerequisites CL 3, Craft Magic Arms and Armor, Craft Wondrous Items, true strike; Market Price 3680 gp.
