Rings of protection and cloaks of resistance

These are both staple items for most characters, just like the ability booster items. I like the solution we've seen for the ability enhancers, buy moving them all to two slots, and moving lots of the items in those slots to other ones, to encourage a greater selection of other items.

I propose a return to a pre-3E version of Rings of Protection by combining the deflection and resistance bonuses to encourage more use of other cloaks. This would require increasing the costs on the rings of course, and still leave one ring slot "tied up" with a critical item. Since you have 2 ring slots though, this isn't so bad as having a singular cloak slot "tied up" with the cloak of resistance.

Thoughts?

This, I like.

Especially because it makes the ring a lot more of a 'Ring of Protection', instead of the common freudian slip 'Ring of Deflection'.

This is an interesting thought... I am open to it, but I am not yet convinced.

I will bounce this one around the office.

Building a ranger npc this weekend I was torn between a cloak of resistance and cloak of elven kind. Seems like a good idea to me.

cloaks /rings of protection should REPLACE cloaks or resistance, this would give us ONE item that gives a plus to AC AND saving throws.

I remember seeing things like ring of protection +3, +1 saves 10' radius and things like that.

This item would also go far for fixing issues with saving throws at higher levels.

Rings and Cloaks of Protection which add to deflection AC and resistance to saves is a great idea. It brings us back to old school days and frees up one of the slots required for the big six.

I'd price them at a base price of 3,000gp.

3000 - it's no replacement if you're going to up the price.

The same applies to the Belts and Headbands. The one *good* thing that the Magic Item Compendium did was declare that these basic bonuses are *not* factored in when considering secondary effects for increase in price.

I would suggest the following:

Have Rings of Resistance, Rings of Deflection, and Rings of Protection (for 1k, 2k, and 3k base price respectively).

There *must* be an equivalent for a cloak of resistance, without tripling its value, it is far far far far far too common.

I would also suggest having Cloaks of Resistance, Cloaks of Deflection, and Cloaks of Protection (same pricing). Otherwise parties will have no option for save boosting until 12th level, relying on random (or not random) treasure being handed out.

Another option would be to simply have the current versions, and the "both" versions in both slots. Have Ring of Deflection and Ring of Protection, and Cloak of Resistance and Cloak of Protection. Biggest problem there will be the increase in power if someone doesn't convert a ring of protection to a ring of deflection.

I like the idea alot but I do some questions:

Which slot will it use? Ring or Cloak?
How will the bonuses work? Will it be "ring of protection + 1~5" and just hits both the same amount? Or will it be "ring of protection + 3/+2"? where you can get more deflection bonus than save bonus or visa versa?

We could maybe use something like what they have in the magic weapons and armor area where the ring can have up to a + 10 enhancment bonus, with no more than a + 5 toward either deflection bonus or resistance bonus. In addition things like elemental resistance could be added as an equilivent enchanment bonus (minor + 1, normal + 3, major + 5) and a ring of evasion could be a + 5 equilivent ability.

This reminds of the ring of defense that the Justicar and Escalla wear. Its basically a ring of protection and cloak of resistance combined. Their stats and the magic item can be found in Dragon #290, although the pricing is 3.0

I tried to update it with some help to 3.5 and here's what I got:

Old 3.0 version market price
+1 - 4,000 gp
+2 - 16,000 gp
+3 - 36,000 gp
+4 - 64,000 gp
+5 - 100,000 gp

Updated 3.5 version
+1 - 3,500 gp
+2 - 14,000 gp
+3 - 31,500 gp
+4 - 56,000 gp
+5 - 87,500 gp

Count me in as in favor of this change. I'd be fine with there being BOTH cloaks of protection (that do both) and rings of protection (that do both), like in 1st Ed. A lot of neato cloaks never get used because the basic item is just too good to pass up.

I too would really like a return to old school cloaks (and rings) of protections. Anything that ties PF back to its roots gets a positive nod from me.
