Discussion thread.
First, sort yourselves out.
Tentatively:
Rev Rosey: Rogue (probably ranged)
Fabesminis: Ranger (beastmaster)
JZ: Fighter (standard)
Radavel: Cleric
Bmars3: Wizard
This is a human-dominated setting (well, the non-feywild part, anyway).
PCs are at the very beginning of 4th level.
22 point buy, PHB races, any class, any equipment. Start with all the "adventuring gear" you want and mundane weapons and armor; a level 3 item, a level 4 item, and a level 5 item, and 680 gp with which to buy other stuff (but not to upgrade the specific items, by my interpretation).
I'm inclined to have all or most of you know each other before-hand, so if you want to go in on a battle standard or something, that would be fine, but you may not buy anything above level 4.
I'm going out for a bit, but at the pace this is going, I expect y'all will have full characters within 3 hours!

Oh, yes, the setup:
The constable of Riverbend has arrested the miller, Froderick, believing that he drowned his elven wife and went mad with grief (Froderick was crying out that his wife was "in the pond"). However, her body was not found in the millpond. The local Reeve will hold court in 4 days to judge Froderick, but has sufficient misgivings to hire the PCs to investigate the mystery before he hangs the miller.

Rev Rosey: Eglantine Prakseda, Human Rogue (aerialist?) - partly done
Fabesminis: Elias - Elf Beastmaster Ranger - partly done
JZ: Fighter
Radavel: Human Cleric of Kord
Bmars3: Wizard
General guidelines for my games:
Third-person, present tense, please. General courtesy rules -- don't write someone else's reactions.
On your character sheet, please post the worked-out details of your powers and feats. If I have to move for you, I don't want to have to worry about 2[W]+STR -- show me 2d8+3, and any special effects. Also, please make clear what skills are trained.
The top of the character sheet should have the following in some reasonable layout: defenses, current/total HP, current/total surges available, surge value, current Action Points, passive Perception and Insight, and initative bonus (for breaking ties). It is your responsibility to keep the above current, especially current hp. Thank you.
Most of the stuff that's specific is about combat:
As noted, I love the tactical aspects of the game. In a PBP, I compromise with the initiative "clump" system -- calling for actions from two or three of you at a go, pausing for revision if something big changes after you post but before you move. I will usually feel free to operate a character in combat (or out, for that matter, if necessary) if more than 24 hours have passed since the turn was called. I will not use an encounter or daily power when acting for you. If you expect to be away, please leave me some contingencies behind a spoiler, which can call for encounter or daily powers.
For tactical maps, I use Google spreadsheets for a battlegrid -- see my profile for a couple of examples. They're ugly, but they're very easy to update and always as current as GM on-the-ball-ness permits. Reference to coordinates is expected.
I ask everyone to roll a bunch (say, 10) of initiatives in advance and post them in their profile; then, when combat happens, I can yank a set at random and we don't have to wait for everyone to roll. In most cases, groups of identical monsters will have the same initiative.
I like to use Invisiblecastle to roll (when it's working), but I don't much care what you use, just so long as the results are clear. Please include in your post what defense your attack targets and any special effects it has. I definitely do not have all the powers memorized, and making the GM flip to your character sheet to resolve your action Just Annoys The GM.
That's all I can think of for now . . .

Wow you guys are fast. Will get back to you today.

JZ's Bren |

JZ here. Bren's been made in the Great Weapon Fighter style as explained in the PHB. The character sheet is a mess (I'll continue working it into the format that Pat prefers). The calculations should be accurate. The online generator I used is from a guy who seems to follow the rules very precisely. I found him here : http://www.pathguy.com/cg4.htm

JZ,
Just at first glance, you may wish to reconsider your choice of character generator. I noticed two mistakes so far: You can't have more than one stat below 10, and the initiative is calculated incorrectly (should be +5 -- DEX (+3) + 1/2 Level (+2)).

OK. Yuck!

Found the problem with Init -- you've got CON and DEX reversed in the Paizo boxes (D&D4 changed the order). So using your stats as intended, the only problem is probably the two low stats.

My sheet's a bit more intelligible now. Hopefully no errors. I've yet to pick the magic items.
BTW, guys, if we already know each other, what should we call our adventuring group?
Interesting point. We have a Beastmaster, a bounty-hunting cleric, a fighter and a circus acrobat to somehow link together. Plus a wizard of unknown anything. Or maybe we are the circus?
That sounds like one of those terrible jokes that begins "And Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman all went into a bar..."

Will post the sheet in a few hours. Just need to get some sleep first.
Wimp.
Change of subject:
If you have a martial character (most of you) and do not have access to Martial Power, I suggest you download the open beta of the DDI Character Builder. Most of Martial Power is in it, though with a few bugs, but it will give you descriptions of powers that aren't in the PHB (plus some from Dragon and such).
It only goes up to level 3, so you'll have to do the last level of math yourself, but PCs don't get powers at level 4, so you'll have all the options.
Our sixth player declined, so this is our party, assuming our wizard turns up. If not, I'll recruit again (or invite y'all to find someone).

I'm here working on my character sheet as I get time during the holidays. I'm using the beta generator up to level 3 aqnd going from there. My concept is a war wizard mentalist using mostly psychic/necrotic powers. I will post my first draft within 6 hours. It sounds like my build should fit right in with this cast of misfits.

Great, glad we didn't lose you. I went ahead and let Badslacker in, so we'll have a party of 6 (he's playing a bard, so more healing, yay).

Does anyone have an idea where could I find the bard class description and stats except for D&D insider ? I'm not a subscriber and for some reason the free compedium demo doesn't work for me. I can see only the names of the powers, skills, etc. but when I can't view them.
Thanks.

Sorry, the only place the Bard is legitimately available is through Insider. The free Compendium went to names only when the subcription wall went up.

For Pat
Presently, he is on extended leave from the Church's activities but that does not mean that he is not dishing out his own brand of religion to the heathens and the unrepentant. He makes a living as a bounty hunter and it was during the pursuit of one of his 'marks' did he make the acquaintance of his fellow adventurers.
