Human

Here we go. This is the discussion thread for the follow up to Rune Stones.

Players:

Pat - keeping Vel
Fabes - keeping Arianwyn
Thrug - keeping Kia
Amelia - possibly keeping Whiteclaw
Rad - incoming human Paladin
Scribbling Rambler - possible rogue or ranger
Tieren - if you come back, you're welcome - I'll find a way to get you in.

Lazaro is alternate.

Ongoing crew, please update yourselves to level 3. Note that you do NOT become level 3 until you get back to Riggarth (about a page from now).

Incoming crew, create a level 3 pc. You may each have one magic item up to level 2 of your choice. I'll sort out starting gold for you all shortly.

The adventure will be a heavily tweaked variant on Goodman's "Legacy of the Savage Kings". If you've played it before, never fear. You're unlikely to recognise a lot of it. It has the advantage of being a quest for yet more doom from the past, and may well provide you with an ongoing nemesis. The group has an Indiana Jones feel to it anyway, so I'm just capitalising on that. You'll start off in the small coastal town of Riggarth. Assume Nentir Vale (the basic 4E setting) for mechanics purposes.

More details will follow.

Ho yeaaahhhh..... Dark pact power comin' right up... mwahahaha

Dark Archive

Rev, thanks for setting the bar to Level 3.

Male Human - dash of elf Miniature painter/ Heroic

Yo Radavel, the god you'll want for your pally is Kord, Unaligned God of Strength and Storms.

Discussion of Paladin of Kord concepts

Dark Archive

Thanks, Fabes.

I am writing out my character sheet right now. Min-maxing is such a B@#$%!

Male Human - dash of elf Miniature painter/ Heroic

Min-maxing... perish the thought.

Just seen Rosey's description of Arianwyn. Flamboyant? Perhaps. Slightly loopy Elric-clone given to spouting dialogue akin to a '70s Thor comic. Definitely.

:D

Grand Lodge

Just double-checking a couple of things:

Are we using Standard Array or Customized Ability Scores?

How much gold may we spend on non-magical equipment?

I'm actually leaning towards a Tiefling Cleric of Ioun.

Human

Scribbling Rambler - Customised as described on page 17-18 PHB. Tiefling cleric of Ioun sounds ideal. They are not a group capable of keeping out of trouble and more healing would be extremely welcome. Starting gold always gives me headaches, however see below.

Everyone

The ongoing crew don't have much (it was not a treasure heavy adventure). Also I always get this wrong. Therefore, we'll do this strictly by the book.

Some of you already have magic items. You may upgrade those to suitable levels if you would like and it's possible to do. Take account of these and do the following.

You get a level 2 magic item, a level 3 magic item and a level 4 magic item of your choice.

You get 520 starting gold.

Yes, you can spend it on what you want. Yes, I am aware that this is a golden opportunity for you to get yourselves power-housed up. I can live with that. Monsters will be suitably tough as well and you might well need all the help you can get.

Fabes "Flamboyant" was the best I could come up with as a one word description.

Also just a general note. Those of you familiar with my games know that I will be completely ruthless about moving things along if they seem to be stalling. This applies particularly in combat. Once the call goes out for your action, you have 24 hours (pretty much to the minute) to do something. If you don't, I will. It will be a conservative selection based as far as possible on how you've been playing your character.

I also need you all to post the actual figures into your profiles so I can check things easily. For example, Int v Ref doing 2(W)+Cha mod +3 isn't helpful, but 1d20+2 v Ref; 2d8+3+3 is. I know only too well that this is a pain in the neck to do, but particularly with level 3 pcs, it's very helpful indeed. Likewise any nifty powers you possess that allow interrupts or affect allies should be noted.

In general I expect you to keep tabs on your characters and make sure that hp and surges are up to date. Ummm... and I'm not as draconian as I'm probably sounding. Except about the 24 hour cut off for posting during combat.

Female Human Wizard 11 / Master of Flame

I believe Vel is ready.

Human

Vel's just been blessed by a god and will need to update herself.

Oh.

Well, then.

Grand Lodge

My Tiefling Cleric, Reason, is finally done, and is posted here.

Man, I thought that it was supposed to be faster to make up higher level characters in 4e!!??

DM Rev, let me know if there are any issues or questions. He spent a lot of that 520 gp on Ritual stuff.

Male Human - dash of elf Miniature painter/ Heroic

Arianwyn is tricked out, but I haven't bought anything with the 520gp yet.

Looking at the fancy doo-dads in Adventurer's Vault.

This does make me think, Rosey, that the PCs in our home game are quite poor in terms of items. Well... your halfling rogue seems to have the lion's share.

Female Eladrin Warlord/10

Kia is here. I just need to work out what I've got from the runestones and spend, spend, spend...

Human

Blimey - you chaps are keen. How nice :D

Pat, Vel is fine and even more lethal. Yippee. Flaming death is coming folks.

Reason looks good to me Scribbling R. Seeing no problems there. Nice avatar.

Fabes - you may not be aware of this yet, but Arianwyn has been blessed by a god. He will need amendment. Notice you were unable to resist taking some Dark pact pretties.

Looking at the official build for a level 3 pc, then yes, I'd say our home game chaps are somewhat poorly equipped really. Maybe Lord Padraig has some hidden stuff he can't wait to unload on us out of gratitude.

I think one of the reasons our home game chums are poor in items is because some people don't look round in all the places some of us expect them to....

But it should be almost, but not quite, one magic item per person per level.

Male Human - dash of elf Miniature painter/ Heroic

Apparently, Keep on the Shadowfell is notorious for its relative paucity of magic doo-dads, but yes, you guys have missed one or two (which I'm sure two such suspicious old hands as yourselves could guess).

You don't seem to be doing too badly, though.

Anyway! Yes, I noticed the blessing. Jolly nice of Jarovit. I changed a couple of Arianwyn's items after seeing that Reason had exactly the same ones! I think I like the new ones more, so that worked well!

Glad it worked out.

I tried to not base my character off of any of the old ones, except for class, so I don't know about any other duplication.

BTW, thanks! I started with a copy of your format for Arianwyn when I was making up Reason.

Human

Excellent. Just need Amelia and Radavel to check in and we'll be off. The useful old buffer Hroaldr will be filling you in shortly on your next mission.

(He's the druid who packed them all off to Pharoe Island to make tracings of the Rune Stones in the first adventure. Can usually be found in the Fruitful Bloom tavern downing the local cider.)

Dark Archive

For Rev

Spoiler:
I am calling my character "The Rogue Knight."

Originally, he was a member of an Order devoted to the Lord of Battle, as they refer to "Kord." However, he and his fellows were betrayed by members who were secretly following a demon lord. A battle ensued. Due to the demon-worshippers' planning, The Rogue Knight and his friends were ejected from the Order's castle. Fighting a rear guard action, The Rogue Knight suffered a head blow that knocked him out but fortunately convinced the demon worshippers he was dead. The Rogue Knight awoke a few days later. There was no sign of his companions nor the enemy. However, the head wound seriously damaged his memory and recall. Hence, Int 8.

He now wanders the countryside, teaching the common people strength and self-reliance, virtues that the Lord of Battle approve of.

I have a little speaking engagement this morning. I'll be back to post my character stats later.

He's going to be an interesting addition. Works for me.

Rambling Scribbler and Radavel
When you have a moment, could you concoct some kind of reason, however footling, for being in Riggarth?

It's a small coastal town without very much to recommend it, apart from an odd enclave of druids (locally known as the Woodsy Boys), the skill of the fisherfolk and the potency to the cider they brew there. The Woodsy's are surprisingly adept at keeping their fingers on the pulse of the weird, and your primary contact Hroaldr has a nose for trouble. Since he's also pushing 50 and not an adventurer, he gets other people to go and look for him. He doesn't pay particularly well, but he's a reliable source as far as he goes.

You can get basic supplies in Riggarth quite easily and sometimes more exotic things as well.

Your other useful contact is Captain Bifrost, captain of the Curlew. He's an old friend of Hroaldr's and has often carried information and artifacts for him. He knows (or can find out) quite a bit about the coast, islands and other sea related matters.

Shadow Lodge

Male Human

Wooo, alternate! Heh, just bored.

Human

Lazaro, if you want to rustle yourself up a character, go ahead. No guarantees you'll get to play, but if you're bored ...

Dark Archive

For Rev

Spoiler:
The Rogue Knight is probably there to buy supplies. However, his mission to piece together his identity may lead him there. Did I mention he can't recall much of his past?

Edit: Another idea is to have some village elder contact him to help train the people to better protect themselves.

Human
Radavel wrote:

Radavel

Spoiler:

Supplies is fine. If he's just wandering aimlessly, Riggarth is as good a place to go as any in the north. Ships put out from there fairly regularly. It's not a major trade route, but does take cargo and people to the remoter islands.

On the any lead will do basis, the Woodsy druids would be a reasonable port of call, particularly if he's wondering at all if there's any mystical basis to his infirmity. For all he knows, the demon could have cursed him. Does he even remember the demon, or his recall patchier than that?

For Rev

Spoiler:
Recall is very patchy. Unless, something reminds him about the "incident." Possible curse is a nice touch.

I'm checking in. Have not yet updated Whiteclaw though. We all get a level 2, 3, and 4 magic item, just to clarify?

Human

You do indeed. Martial power is now out as well, so if you have access to that and want to alter her powers, go for it.

Martial Power is good supplement. I like the new fighter powers the most. Especially the tempest.

Rev Rosey wrote:

Just need to flesh him out a bit. I was orginally going to play him in Spellgard, but Brujo seemed more fun. I was then going to play him in Ashenport, but my love for barbarians won there. That and a tielfing in a party of dragonborn would have been 'interesting'.

Cull, he's a warlock. Just not the kind you think he is.

Rambling Scribbler? Isn't he that hack WereCabbage guy? You know, this one?

;-)

DM Rev

Spoiler:

Reason has heard that the druids have a portion some ancient documentation about some of the details of the pact that created the Tiefling race.

Of course, whether this is just a rumour is up to you.

Ooops. I am so sorry. Part of my confusion I must admit is that at the dawn of Rune Stones we had a potential player called Rambling Scribe. Great apologies. Yes - your reason is fine and far from footling. I will fiddle about with that too.

Human

Time to unveil a few hints I think.

You will be going north (very seasonal). It's going to be cold. Hroaldr is concerned about a fresh set of rumours. He'll be along to give you some information any post now.

Yup, that's the hack that I linked to. I didn't realize that he originally was almost part of this group when I signed up.

I'm his older brother and 4e DM.

Oh, and no apologies necessary. :)

Yeah, I hope to get it soon. Her sheet's updated except for the magic items. Looking stuff over for them, and hope to get that done soon. Oh, and welcome to the new people! :)

What's the starting gold for 3rd level characters?

Shadow Lodge

Male Human
Radavel wrote:

520gp, plus a second, third and fourth lvl item. Pg 143 of the DMG.

Ok, Whiteclaw's upgraded, minus any gold spending which I may or may not do. I did do a level 3 feat retrain to swap out her level 2 feat for Weapon Profiency in the Three Headed Flail from Adventurer's Vault. Just cause a gnoll using a triple flail is cool :)

So, she's back to 7 move all the time, no more 9 charges :) At least until level 4 :)

Human

Unexpected work crisis means I can't get this started today. However tomorrow morning (UK time) should see us up and running. Hope that's good for everyone.

Lazaro, I like Cull very much. Warlocks are so much fun. Thanks for doing that and without wishing doom on anyone's head, I hope you get to play him sometime, even if it's not in the frozen north.

Shadow Lodge

Male Human

Thanks. Even if I don't get a chance to play him; he's fleshed out enough that I can drop him into another game.

Human

Rad - can you post the actual figures your powers use into your profile please? Just in case I ever have to run The Rogue Knight.

Amelia - would you object to rolling your own attacks on this outing? Combat is quite complex from my end, and monsters have awkward powers to keep track of. I'd be very grateful.

I'm about to construct an appetising intro and set up the game thread.

GAME THREAD

The first post is basically an update for the old lags. Reason and The Rogue Knight are about to make an appearance, but there were a couple of loose ends that needed tying up.

Human

We're off. Really looking forward to this and hope it's fun for you all.

BTW, Kia is now fully (re)formed for this adventure. She is concentrating her new powers on enabling others to have help with their saving throws.

Advance warning that I'll be away from Tuesday morning to late Thursday next week. You will all be spared chivying posts. Make the most of the respite. Or alternatively feel free to make chivying posts of your own.
