Everyone awake now, the group focuses their attacks on the creature. Rin, still groggy, misses with his ray of cold energy.
Raivek, on the other hand, unleashes a flurry of blows, connecting with his shortsword. Barshevy, the other party member who had not been asleep, unleashes a ray of holy energy, but misses the ape-man.
Drivish, now awake, moves from his chair and opens the second door to the hall. Qadim-sul also advances, drawing his khopesh.
The ape creature launches what could be another devastating blow against Raivek, but the ranger is able to dodge. It then uses its focusing trick again, renewing its mark on Raivek. It then steps out of immediate reach, back into the hall.
Attack Raivek, using CA (1d20 10=14, 1d6 3 2d6=11)
Recharge on Assassin's Mark (1d6=4)
Barshevy, two things: Shift is a Move, not Minor. Also, Lance of Faith is ranged, and would trigger opportunity attacks. Please feel free to revise your movement, or confirm and I'll roll the OA (though you'd have the benefit of cover from the closed door). I'm not pressing the issue as most of us are still getting used to 4E and/or 4E pbps.
Italic 'd's are open doors.
Hunter's Quarry is not a mark.
All the sleepy folks are awake, but still slow.
Lafiel
Rin
Raivek
Barshevy
Drivish (move, fail save)
Qadim-sul
Ape-man
Lafiel Abriel |
Move to H24, minor to ready shuriken, Deft Strike (Move to J24).
Deft Strike throw + Damage (1d20+7=27, 1d6+4=6)
Ignore the damage roll, it should be 10 damage (crit for natural 20)
Lafiel loses sight of the retreating creature, then quickly changes her path, moving as fast as she can through the door Drivish has just opened. On her way she readies another shuriken, throwing it on the creature's flank. The shuriken flies and hits the creature's neck, splattering blood right next to him.
Lafiel tries to shake off the magical slow effect and regain her usual speed, but doesn't manage to.
I don't get combat advantage for that move, right ?
Another question - do I have to spend a minor each turn to ready a shuriken ?

A solid blow!
No, no advantage. I think for non-magic thrown weapons you do have to ready them individually, though I'm open to correction.Rin Lyulfsson |
Still swaying from the spell, Rin walks slowly towards the door and readies another ray of frost. He shakes his head violently, attempting to break the final effects of the sleep spell.
Move to E25, Ray of Frost again (v Fort): (1d20 3=19, 1d6 3=8). If he can get line of sight on ape boy, he'll unleash this and if it hits, apeman is slowed to the end of Rin's next turn.
pat512 |
Dispel Confusion time, this one's my fault. Let's take it in order.
Lafiel -- I misplaced you, but we were both wrong. From H24, the furthest you can go while slowed is H24-H23-I23. When an obstacle (such as a wall) fills a corner, you can not move diagonally across it. Map now corrected. You still got your crit, though.
Rin -- From E25 you do not have LOS. Note that the door between H28 and I28 is still closed (I know it's hard to tell on the map). You could ready an attack, or double move.
Raivek --
Barshevy --
Drivish -- will move and fail save vs. slow
Qadim-sul
Ape-man
Barshevy |
pat512 |
Raivek |
Furious that he only landed a single blow, Raivek steps toward the ape and unleashes another slice-stab.
move, 5' step toward ape (I29); standard, Twin Strike vs AC. No idea what to do with my minor action, so i'll leave it.
Twin Strike vs AC; Scimitar and Sword (1d20+5=16, 1d20+6=13)
Twin Strike damage; Scimitar and Shortsword (1d8=2, 1d6=2)
The power says 1[w] damage, so i assume that means no strength. If so, i incorrectly added my strength in the previous turn.
Hunters Quarry (1d8=2)
Qadim-sul |
I believe we have a swordmage amongst us do we not? Lightning Lure is a lovely power!
I've got to get close enough to him first! Damned slow effect!
Cursing the numbness in his limbs, Qadim-sul staggers on, trying to get closer to the beast. As he steps behind Raivek, sparks dance across his skin and the air around him seems to darken. In the distance, a peal of thunder rumbles ominously.
Double move to G-28; Minor: Promise of Storm
Save vs. slow (1d20=15) Yay! Lightning lure next turn!
pat512 |
Raivek closes for the attack, but the blows do not connect. Drivish also advances. Qadim-sul lines up for an assault on the ape creature, but is too lethargic to affect it before it attacks Raivek with another targeted thrust, stabbing deep into the ranger's thigh (-17hp, then marked again, no move).
Attack Raivek with Mark; damage; recharge mark (1d20 10=25, 1d6 3 2d6=17, 1d6=4)
Raivek -- good catch, Twin Strike doesn't get STR damage.
Barshevy -- Healing Word should be Surge + 1d6 + 3 (WIS modifier), so a total of 7+2+3=12 healing on Raivek, bringing him up to full before this attack. Good thing, too.
Initiative and status -- let me know if I missed anything:
Lafiel - slow
Rin - ok
Raivek - bloodied, used AP, marked
Barshevy - ok
Drivish - ok
Qadim-sul - ok
Ape-man - injured
Qadim-sul |
"Come to me, beast!" Qadim-sul calls. He twirls his khopesh in a complex pattern, then levels it at the ape-man. Lightning dances along the blade, then lashes out, forming a line of electricity that wraps itself around the creature. Qadim-sul yanks his blade back with a flourish, pulling the ape back into the room on a leash of lightning.
Standard: Lightning Lure; Minor: mark with Aegis of Assault
Rin Lyulfsson |
Rin sprints to the unopened door and slips through it. His fingers spread wide as he hurls a jet of infernal flame in the direction of the Apeman.
"Back, back, or suffer."
Rin to I22. Move to door at H/I22. Minor action to open door. Standard action, hurl Hellish Rebuke and hope the things Reflex is lower than it's Fort.
Lafiel Abriel |
Minor - ready Short sword, Move - J25, Standard - Deft Strike (Move to K27), Gain combat advantage (at last).
Deft Strike with Combat advantage (1d20+9=17)
In case that hits - Damage + Sneak Attack (1d6+4=10, 2d8=8)
In case Deft Strike doesn't hit, I use my action point, then use Positioning Strike (vs. Will)
Positioning Strike + Combat Advantage (1d20+9=13)
Positioning Strike + Sneak Attack (1d6+4=8, 2d8=8)
Lafiel moves again, unsheathes her Short sword and positions herself behind the ape creature. She strikes at its back trying to cut through its armor.
If Deft Attack doesn't hit :
The attack misses. Lafiel curses, and suddenly moves faster. She gets the ape's attention and appears to stumble, but when the ape creature lunges toward her she quickly ducks, turns sideways and strikes again at its exposed back.
pat512 |
I'll pass this turn. I'll save my remaining healing word for when both Rin and Raviek get injured.
Not sure what you mean by 'pass.' Delay? That would let you re-enter the action whenever you like. Also, not sure if this is what you meant, but Healing Word heals only one character, even though its area is a burst.
Raivek |
Twin Strike; Scimitar, Shortsword (1d20+5=19, 1d20+6=10)
With Combat Advantage, should be 21 and 12 vs AC.
Twin Strike damage; Scimitar, Hunters Quarry, Shortsword (1d8=5, 1d8=7, 1d6=3)
Scimitar 5 dmg, hunters quarry 7 dmg, shortsword 3 dmg
Geez i hate being sick
Drivish Ammasin |
Drivish moves around to block the "backdoor".
Move action - J26, K26, L27, K28
He hefts his massive halberd and swings through, adding jabs with the haft for good measure.
Minor - draw weapon; Standard - Reaping Strike
Attack 1d20+7 = 11; Damage 1d10+4= 14 or 4 on a miss
In the link the attack is 13 because I hit the wrong number.
And consider the beast marked (at least until Qadim's turn).
"Qadim-sul, why are we fighting a giant monkey in the middle of the Duke's castle?"
pat512 |
Lafiel flanks the beast. Unable to land a blow herself, she still sets Raivek up nicely. Rin unleashes infernal flames at the ape-man, but the creature is just too agile. Raivek takes advantage of Lafiel's distraction and lands a good strike with his scimitar.
Drivish swings around to help surround the ape-man and bloodies it with quick strokes of the halberd. Qadim-sul, meanwhile, distracts the creature, though is unable to call it to him.
The ape-thing looks around wildly, then bolts up the hall.
Lafiel, Raivek, and Drivish all get OAs. Lafiel and Raivek still have flank. Will update the map afterward if it matters.
Lafiel Abriel |
OA (basic attack) vs. Ape, Damage, Sneak Attack (1d20+6=7, 1d6+1=3, 2d8=9)
Lafiel tries to swing at the creature as it passes next to her, running in the hall. However, she swings too fast losing her balance cutting the air where Drivish's head was a second ago. Cursing, she shouts : "Stop it!"
Drivish Ammasin |
Rin Lyulfsson |
Out of order, but just in case it comes in handy ...
Rin's head finally clears and he unleashes yet another blast of cold at the fleeing figure.
"Freeze!"
Ray of Frost (v Fort) against Apeman (on hit Apeman is slowed): (1d20 3=19, 1d6 3=6)
Raivek |
OA vs AC; Basic Melee Attack (1d20+6=12, 1d6+3=9)
With Combat Advantage the attack should be 14 vs AC.
On my init:
Careful Attack vs AC; CA Damage; Hunters Quarry Damage (1d20+7=14, 1d8=2, 1d8=4)
With Combat Advantage the attack should be 16 vs AC.
pat512 |
The ape creature, though staggered by Drivish's attack, resumes his move down the hall, moving well wide of Rin. Raivek is no longer marked
Barshevy moves to the chamber window and calls for guards, to no immediate response.
Lafiel, then will resolve Rin's attack. The tactical situation is too twitchy right now to go much ahead.
Lafiel Abriel |
Move to K25, Minor to ready Shuriken, Standard to Deft Strike (Move to K23). Because the ape creature is running, I get combat advantage and can sneak attack.
Shuriken with CA + Damage + Sneak Attack (1d20+9=10, 1d6+4=9, 2d8=9)
wow, second 1 in a row. no luck.
Lafiel tries to run after the creature, taking another shuriken from her belt and throwing it at the creature. However, the magical slow doesn't allow her feet to move quickly enough, and she trips, catching herself before falling but dropping the shuriken. Disappointed with herself, she doesn't manage to release herself from the magical slow.
Drivish Ammasin |
Drivish moves with the creature. Although a couple of steps behind, he takes advantage of his polearm to continue the assault. This time he puts everything he has into the swing.
Move to L23 and Power Attack with Reaping Strike. And the creature is marked.
Attack = 24; Damage = 11
Qadim-sul |
Raivek |
Revision:
Move - Walk to L26; Standard - Charge (ending in L22)
Charge with Shortsword (1d20+7=14)Is he still granting CA because of running? If so, this number should be 16 vs AC.
Shortsword Damage (1d6+3=6)
Hunters Quarry (1d8=6)
pat512 |
After Drivish's halberd leaves a gaping wound, Qadim-sul's lightning finishes off the assassin.
Out of combat
Barshevy
Barshevy Perception DC15
Lafiel Abriel |
Lafiel glances around looking for anything else unusual in the hallway, while not paying any attention to Barshevy's yelling for help. At the same time she hurries to the creature's corpse, searching anything of interest, especially something that can explain what that creature was and why it came to the keep. In addition she examines the creature itself (trying to recognize what it is), and its sword and censer. On her way, she also picks up her thrown shurikens.
I can re-use the shurikens, right ? Also, I'm released from the slow or do I need to roll again ?
If these are needed :
Perception and Insight rolls, Knowledge roll (1d20+5=16, 1d20+5=24, 1d20=7)
pat512 |
As Lafiel and others examine the corpse,
Arcana or Nature DC15:
I can re-use the shurikens, right ? Also, I'm released from the slow or do I need to roll again ?
Yes for thrown weapons, and you'll eventually save, so yes (if you were taking ongoing damage, you'd need to roll it out).
Let me know if and when the group takes a brief rest.Lafiel Abriel |
Lafiel doesn't manage to identify anything about the situation, so she proceeds to the big doors to the east (leading to the Duke's chambers), putting her ear to the door (and looking through the keyhole, if there is any), to try and find out if the Duke's rooms have been infiltrated.
Is the door locked ?
