Has there been any consideration given to using 6 sided hexes instead of squares for the battle maps?
Part of the reason that I am asking is that it seems inefficient and clumsy/cumbersome to handle diagonal movement with the 1-2 method.
A 5 foot hex would eliminate this issue/problem.

For years I've used hexes for outdoor movement, for the very reasons you mentioned. For underground stuff I still use squares for two reasons. One, it's easier to fit rectangular-style dungeon rooms and corridors into squares. Two, my Master Maze has 1" square grids cast into the floors.
I say go with what you prefer. Hexes can work just fine if you like them.

I'm sure we're all smart enough to handle the 1-2 method without any delay or hassle.
Plus, starting to use hexes now would break with tradition, and the benefit isn't enough to do that, I think.
But come to think of it, maybe we can get alternate maps with hexes as a web enhancement. Of course, depending on how they do the maps, this might require a lot of work, but if they put in the grid in the end, it could be a simple replacement. Maybe the hex maps wouldn't be perfect, but it would be better than nothing.
But my stance remains firm against gelatinous hexagons.
