Roylenna backs off and fires her ray at the rat, but it only fizzes harmlessly. Rana steps into the fray to K6 and digs into the rat with his shortswords but manages only to graze it for 2 points of damage. Grond on the other hand makes short shrift of another rat.

The rats retaliate and both Grond and Rana are severely bitten. Grond suffers 7 points and Rana 4, with two Fort saves for Grond and one for Rana.

It's Sandros, Proteus, Roylenna, Grond and Rana next, but feel free to post in any order. And if someone will post for Rana, that's OK too.

Sandros drinks his potion as a standard action, then gets to his feet as a move action. If possible, I'd like to grab my rapier as part of that action.
cure potion (1d8+1=7 hp)

Male Human (Alryan) Cleric 3

Almost as soon as Sandros places the curative cocktail to his lips, Proteus confidently strides forward to the closest of the disease ridden pests to K7. He strikes it with a closed fist. Hitting AC 15 + 2 = 17 for 3 + 1 = 4 damage.

That should be hit AC 16.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Sandros drinks the refreshing brew and finds new strength to stand up and draw his rapier while Proteus storms ahead and kicks the nearest rat fiercely, sending it flying and landing with a thud, not moving. Lethal damage, I presume.

Royl, Grond and Rana now have a chance to finish the last two rats.

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

Grond will waste no time, but continue to swing his falchion in great sweeping arcs about the chamber. If given the opportunity to flank or otherwise catch an opponent flat-footed, he will do so gladly.

When the grisly task is done, Grond will ask if there are any objections to moving on, now that everyone is up, and will suggest the hallway on the far left (nw?) and will move out, once all are ready, keeping 10' out of thew radius of light cast by the rest of the party (typically 40'.)

I assume that the rat adjacent to Proteus on the map is no longer there. If so, my action will change. Roylenna moves up next to Proteus to J7 and conjures a blob of yellowish-green liquid at one of the remaining rats specifically the one in J10 since it gains no cover from the flailing rogue.

Acid Splash attack; damage (1d20+5=9, 1d3+1=2)

I forgot to subtract the melee penalty, so that only hits AC 5. Bleah! I think I found my dice again.

Rana moves toward the tiny adversaries, smirking at the witch's failures, and runs one of the vermin through - again, the one in J10

Short sword attack; damage (1d20+4=23, 1d6+3=4)
Crit confirm; crit damage if successful (1d20+4=16, 1d6+3=5)

Yay Rana!

I'm afraid so. Those rats are nasty.

Roylenna makes a mystical gesture and a sickly yellow-green blob springs from her hand. Unfortunately it flies short and dissipates on the floor. Grond keeps flailing desperately and Rana runs to join the fray, stabbing one of the rats through the eye. The rat twitches and lies still. The last remaining rat lets out a shrill yell, turns tail and runs.

This grueling battle has rendered you 175 xp each.

Do you want to go back to resting?

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

Who needs what spells? Otherwise Grond votes for going on.

Proteus needs about 4 more hours to regain his spells and uses of channel energy.

Grond the Backstabber wrote:

My, aren't we impatient...

I have absolutely nothing. How long have we rested thus far? How long until morning? Without 8 hours of rest to regain my uses of channeling, I am going to be virtually useless.

I will say this place seems busier than the marketplace at noon in spring. Might I suggest, next time we should rest somewhere a little less busy.

EDIT: Ninja'd

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

Ok lets try resting... yet again. I agree in the future we need a 'safe haven' to rest, grand central station prolly not the best place for uninterrupted slumber.

We need healing spells though (myself especially) so I guess we have no choice but to rest.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Apprehensively, after dispatching the rats you all bed down and try to rest. The good news is that apart from the squirrel skittering past you towards the exit at one point you are not disturbed until morning (or something like it). The bad news is that due to the interruptions you don't regain any hps. But Proteus can meditate and regain spells and his channeling is recharged, so I guess you are good to go.

The next question would be: where?

Male Human (Alryan) Cleric 3

Proteus pulls the group together once he awakens. Chanting the one-word phrase "Vitae" twice he serves as a conduit of the healing grace of Asclepius. The dice gods are being kind. 6 + 5 totalling 11.

He also goes by each group member who was bitten by the rats to ensure that no disease festers within any of them.

Heal checks (I'm not sure who all got hit so here is one for everyone).
For Grond 20 + 7 = 27
For Rana 10 + 7 = 17
For Royl 11 + 7 = 18
For Sandros 14 + 7 = 21

Proteus will then sit in meditation in front of the fire. Changed up my spell selection on my character sheet.

Unless we go back to town, changing where we spend the night is only really likely to change the chart Tom's rolling on for the random encounters...

Proteus wrote:

Damn. Should have saved the potion. (sigh) Oh well.

Sandros stretches after his uneven rest, apprently refreshed despite, and runs through a series of quick rapier exercises while Proteus meditates. He then sits down to a quick breakfast. Munching on trail bread, he glances around the group. "Did I miss anything?" he asks.

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

Not if we can find a room with one door we can bar or some other place that would qualify as 'safe haven.'

We should not just drop our bedrools at the sight of the most recent battle is all Im saying. Sorry about the potion lol.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Just to make it a bit easier to decide on your path: The left exit is about 10 feet wide and seems to widen into a cavern of some sort after just twenty feet or so. That's also where the squirrel went.

The right hand passage soon narrows down to 5 feet and continues straight east-north-east for as far as you can see.

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

(Back at full 13 hp)

Grond still likes the left corridor. "Lets get to the bottom of this squirrel experience," he mutters. Rolls and movement plan detailed above.

Works for me...

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

Grond has a disease from an earlier time, would Proteus be able to do anyhting about it with his heal check? Grond submits patiently to the strange poking and prodding by the cleric, but when he asks to see under his tongue, Grond explodes in rage. "Enough! Did you notice the peeling skin in my ears? It's not natural!"

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

"Thank you for sharing your god's blessings once again, Proteus. Those creatures were quick and dangerous. I think Grond and Rana were pretty effective, do you?"

a little later...

"I think I prefer the idea of a wider corridor, myself. Let us follow the squirrel."

Proteus:

Spoiler:
"Proteus, I have my green fire - yes, I've tested it on myself to make sure it would not harm me - I think you should take my potion. You are the healer and you will be able to use it where it do us the most good, whether for yourself or Grond or another of our party. What say you?"

Here's what I see in my mind's eye for Rana...

Rana stretches as he wakes and closely watches the half-elf go through his rapier practice. With a small nod to himself, he busies himself with cleaning his swords and making sure that the edges are good and sharp.

Listening to the discussion of where to go next, he laughs, "A decision without standing around like a gaggle of old women? Amazing! Let's be off!" He gathers his gear and moves toward the designated passage and turns to wait for the rest of the group to assemble in their typical marching order.

Hope Thalyn approves!

"Squirrel?" ask Sandros, politely confused. "Not that I mind the idea of getting to the bottom of the matter, but I'm afraid I still haven't reached the top..."

After the squirrel it is!

Male Human (Alryan) Cleric 3

To Royl

Spoiler:

That is a most gracious offer, Madam. I appreciate that you trust me with such a treasure. I will do my best to use it appropriately.

"I had noticed, friend. Alas, there is nothing that I can do to cure such an ailment as it is beyond my healing capabilities. It is a sign that you have been affected by an evil deed. Is there something you wish to confess?" Proteus tries to stifle the smile that threatens to explode across his face.

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

Roylenna confers with the cleric for a moment and giggles at something he said. "I am far too young for such a title, sir!" She reaches into her belt pouch and withdraws something that she passes over to him.

To the rest, she says, "Same process as before? Proteus and I provide light, Grond leads in the darkness, and the warriors ready to rush to his aid?" She grins at them, "Adventure awaits, I am as ready as I can be!"

Roylenna Brenoien wrote:

"But plenty wise."

"If anyone has need and I am helpless, I have a healing potion in my pack." Proteus makes sure that those in his group know the location of the item.

To Black Tom

Spoiler:
I am looking for a belt pouch. If the orc had one amongst his items, I would like to claim it. Otherwise, can you let me know if we find such an item in the future.

To Proteus

Spoiler:
The orc does indeed possess such an item. For some reason it is empty. There is also the locked box, of course.

Assuming that you use the same tactics as before:

The corridor only goes for about 20 feet before widening into a natural cavern and after another 20 feet terminates in a natural ledge. Twenty feet below, the cave is littered with loose rocks and animal bones. Down there Grond notices an opening in the north wall behind a large stone. That is the only visible exit. The room above the ledge is empty.

Male Human (Alryan) Cleric 3

Fade back a few minutes earlier

Proteus appears ready, but then something strikes him. He walks over and rummages through the items recovered from the orc and apparently finds what he's looking for. He then turns around holding up the locked box from amongst the orc's gear.

"What are we going to do with this?"

Fade back to current

Proteus looks around at Grond. "How badly do you want to find that squirrel?"

When she reaches the ledge (assuming the others do not warn her away for some reason), Roylenna will take a move action to direct her Dancing Lights and then down along the floor below the ledge.

Rana stands ready with one of his short swords in hand, watching back down the passageway as the others consider the ledge.

"I have no rope. Do you see any reason to descend into the pit?"

Squinting into the dark passageway, he says, "Witch, do you have more light for what lies behind us?"

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

"Of course."

Roylenna takes a moment to create more Dancing Lights and sends them to light the passageway for the rearguard, about 30' from where Rana is standing.

"Let me know if you need them to move!"

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

Can Grond make the climb down by taking 10? (Would be climb 17) If so: "I can climb down and check things out. Just be ready to help if something big and ugly and green comes out of that hole." Grond points to areas where the other members can get good covering arcs.

Grond will hide and move quietly along the cave floor, checking for traps especially once he nears the opening, and will also listen.

No, it's a DC 20 climb.

Roylenna's lights reveal nothing particular down there. The opening looks to be about enough for a Medium-sized creature.

Rana wrote:
"I have no rope. Do you see any reason to descend into the pit?"

Sandros grins, reaching into his pack and pulling out a thick coil of hemp rope. "Always prepared, say I." He looks around, trying to determine if there is a handy spot to tie the rope off (so as to be able to climb back up it, should they all descend).

There isn't really, unless you brought pitons also.

Proteus chuckles as Sandros searches in vain for something to which he can attach his length of rope. "Perhaps we can move the statue that was in the previous room close enough to the ledge that we can use that to tie off from. If it is heavy enough to bear the weight of one person."

Roylenna chimes in, "How long is your rope? It might reach all the way to the statue from here! Or maybe Sandros and Rana could hold the rope for Grond to descend. Or I am the lightest by far, maybe you could lower me down and I could take a look." No, wait, I didn't just say that...

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

Grond attempts to climb down, furthest from the cave entrance

I am testing invisible castle roll:
IC Roll climb (1d20=19);
rolling a 19+7=26

Looking around, Grond will stealthily move towards the cave mouth, making sure his comrades are readying themselves to defend his retreat.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

The statue is about 50 feet from the ledge. It looks rather heavy but could probably be moved. While you are exploring this possibility Grond simply climbs down. After thoroughly searching the area for traps Grond notices that the stone can easily be rolled away. Behind it a narrow (5 feet) passageway continues to the north-east. All is quiet.

Proteus looks at Sandros and motions to the idol then toward the ledge. "Shall we give it a try?"

While they are discussing this option, Proteus takes a closer look at the idol trying to discern what it might be before they topple it and use it as an anchor for the descent.

Not sure what type of roll (if any) you want for this. Here are a couple of d20s: 18, 1.

That would be Knowledge (religion) or Knowledge (planes) in this instance. Usually I call for a single roll and then you can apply any Knowledge skills you possess and I'll adjudicate which one is applicable and what the DC would be.

Proteus takes a good look at the statue and can easily discern that it is a crude image of the demon lord of death, Orcus, probably of orcish manufacture. It is entirely non-magical, though, and has even started to crack in places.

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

"This passage looks interesting!" Grond calls back up. "Let's check it out if you can get a rope down here." Grond will wait patiently, keeping his falchion loose and his eyes on the cave mouth.

Proteus looks to Rana to come over and help him and Sandros move the idol trying to do so without toppling it so that it won't break in pieces.

Aid another 15 + 1 so I give a + 2 bonus. I would suggest that Sandros also aid and Rana do most of the "heavy lifting" so to speak. If we are unsuccessful, perhaps Royl can grow Rana.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

With the aid of Sandros and Proteus, Rana manages to topple the statue. As it falls, its head and part of one wing breaks off, making it a little easier to shove towards the ledge. With a concerted effort, you can move the rest of the statue near enough that the rope goes all the way down.

Do you all want to climb down?

I'll climb down

Sandros makes his careful way down the rope, dropping lightly to the floor, then looking around with his rapier out. "Interesting..." he mutters to no one in particular.

By the way, guys, sorry for the slower posting rate - the semester has started, and between 9 hours of grad school and teaching two classes, my free time has diminished precipitously! I'm still around, though, and will still be posting at least once a day...

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

You all make your way down the rope without incident. Grond rolls away the stone after checking it for traps or other unpleasantness, and there is indeed a passageway behind it, that goes on for about 30 feet before widening into some sort of small chamber. The passage is only wide enough for a single file.

What is your marching order and plans?

Don't worry about the posting rate. Once a day is fine by me and anything beyond that is just a pleasant surprise.

Fade back...

After the three man had pushed on the idol for a bit, Proteus suggests that it might be easier if Rana were enlarged using Roylenna's magic. With that, Rana redoubles his efforts and the statue is toppled.

"I have no need of her witchery, priest."

After a moment, he looks at the diminutive spellcaster and says, "No offense."

Fade to present...

Rana moves to the now-exposed opening and waits for the inevitable discussion of what to do next.

Roylenna grins up at the man and simply says, "None taken."

After shimmying down the rope with the others, she moves to look down the dark passageway and asks, "Do you want me to send a light, Grond, or do you want to sneak?"

If Grond opts for the sneaking approach, she will suggest that we take a marching order of

  • Grond
  • Standard distance to the warriors from our two-abreast formation
  • Sandros
  • Roylenna
  • Rana
  • Proteus
She will maintain her Dancing Lights above and behind Proteus until they are needed farther forward. Or back.
