Male Human (Alryan) Cleric 3

Proteus looks quizzically after Rana. "Hmmm," he utters in a tone of wonderment. He looks at Ka'kara. "Interesting set of friends, you have there." His usage of "friends" bears an obvious sarcastic tone. "Are you just going to leave them? Do they not wish to join us?"

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

Grond's rush to the right passage causes Roylenna to forget about the rapidly departing man for a moment, and she concentrates her efforts on watching for anything attacking from that direction.

After Rana is out of earshot and out of sight, she will look down each passage for a moment, but she has to follow her old friend. She dismisses the Lights that were sent after Rana rather than bringing them back to the chute and backlighting everyone from whatever lies ahead.

Turning to the tall woman, she will gesture in the direction that Grond disappeared and say quietly, "That's Grond, an old friend. He's our scout. I think he must have heard something." I won't roll it -- she was oblivious to everything but the "angel" she'd found.

Glancing up and still not being terribly quiet, "Friends? No. I have already left them and I doubt they will follow as they don't even have as much backbone amongst all of them put together as your friend who has run off."

Roylenna wrote:
When opportunity arises, she studies the new arrival, especially the considerable skin art she displays. "Wow, this art is very well done. What does it mean?"

She looks like she is about to respond when Grond goes running by.

Roylenna wrote:

Suddenly a wide grin crosses Ka'kara's face and she grabs the bone handle of her greatsword and draws the obviously well honed length from it's scabbard, "Do you think it's dangerous?" You are sure you detect a strange note of hopefulness to her question as the little light down here glints off both her blade and her grin in the darkness.

"Knowing Grond? Without question," says Sandros, with an air of resignation. He seems to have accepted Ka'kara's denial of familiarity with Rana, and, with a last look after Rana, hurries to pass Royl in heading down the right-hand tunnel.

Female Human Barbarian 7

A fleeting look of annoyance crosses Ka'kara's face as Sandros gets between her and what ever is out there but it is quickly replaced again by her grin as she becomes visibly excited about the situation and follows him. Glancing back towards Roylenna, "I think we need light. I don't want to hurt the elf in the dark."

Male Human (Alryan) Cleric 3

Proteus watches Grond skedaddle across the room where their "guest" holds audience. Before he can ask Sandros where Grond is going, Sandros mimics Grond's actions and high-tails it into the passage. Proteus turns to ask Ka'kara what's happening. As he is just about to get a word out, the blonde barby draws her massive sword and follows in Sandros' footsteps, calling back to Royl while leaving Proteus with his mouth open.

Proteus rubs the back of his neck. It's becoming sore watching everyone run back and forth, to and fro. He looks at Royl questioningly. To his chagrin, Royl simply shrugs her shoulders.

"Nothing good ever comes when we hustle to tussle."

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

The lights hang in the air near the end of the corridor, and you follow Grond's lead. Suddenly he motions to you to stop and points to the ceiling, where the lights illuminate the checkered pattern of a weighted net hidden to drop. A short search reveals the tripwire connected to it.

You try to keep close to the right wall to stay out of sight from the room beyond, which is still deathly silent. Will Grond try to disable the trap and will you enter the room? And if so, in what order?

I think it's time to roll for initiative (and Stealth and Disable device, as applicable).

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

Any suggestions how we handle this one?

From my prerolls: Initiative 14, Perception 10, Stealth 20.

Sandros points at Grond, then, making a "V" with his index and middle fingers, at his own eyes, and then points at the corner with a vigorous nod.

I'm not sure this is quite appropriate, but Bluff check to convey the meaning:
Bluff (1d20+1=13)

Female Human Barbarian 7

Initiative (1d20=18)
Stealth (1d20=8)
Perception (1d20+3=15)

Ka'kara comes up behind Sandros and notices the net and trip wire due to Grond pointing it out. She leans her greatsword against the wall and pulls out her bone and sinew grappling hook and rope. "I'll toss my grapple to catch the wire so the net drops. Then we throw a torch around the corner to see what we face." With that she tosses her grapple out.

Spoiler:
She's smart but impulsive

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

Grond attempts to grab the grapple before the insane female gets them all killed.

To hit? Dex? Here's a 20: not sure (1d20=18) Dex bonus +3, to hit bonus also +3

"Foolish girl, I should strike you down for that!" He looks towards the others. "What is going on here?"

Grond manages to grab the grapple, which was seconds from pulling the net down over him.

Female Human Barbarian 7

Spoiler:
lol, totally misunderstood the situation. Was thinking that the corridor turned here and at the point it turned (in otherwords just ahead of us) is where the net is. I did NOT think we were all hanging out right underneath the net. Here's rolling with it though.

She takes a closer look at the net ahead of her and then slowly follows it through the faint light until she is looking directly over their heads pausing in suprise. She then shrugs and looks back to Grond, "It's just a net, what are you afraid of? Let's back up a little and tear it down and get it out of the way." Looking at the grapple in his hand and smiling, "Nice catch."

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

"Woman, if you knew the dangers we have faced you would understand how carefully we must tread." Grond unconciously stroked his much-cracked skull as he spoke.

Grond quickly steps out from under the net himself, handing the grapple back bruaquely as he steps past. He motions the others back, then turns to the woman. "There is a commotion ahead, and I guess it to be our captors. What say we do a bit of capturing of our own?" At this point Grond will attempt to decipher the nature of this trap, and will attempt to disable it in order to shift it twenty feet further down the hall and re-set the trap. Before he makes the attempt, he will turn back to the others.

(Edit: just realized the net cant be shifted due to it being so close to the room. Will attempt to disable, but NOT destroy the trap.)

"This may draw the enemy down on us, but at least we'll be prepared!" He begins work.

The basics:Per, stl, init (1d20=15, 1d20=19, 1d20=10)
Perception: 15+5=20
Stealth: 19+7=26
Initiative: 10+3=13

Trapwise:App, clm, dis, s/hnd (1d20=14, 1d20=1, 1d20=15, 1d20=20)
Appraise 14+5=19
Climb 1+7=8 (ouch!)
Disable Device 15+7=22
Sleight/Hand 20+7=27 (can I pick a pocket while Im at it?

Noting his difficulty in scaling the wall, Roylenna pipes up, "Maybe I can stand on someone's shoulders to reach the net? You can tell me what to do."

Otherwise, she will take a position where she can observe the end of the hall and ready an action to fire her Heavenly Fire at any hostile actions from the anticipated foes.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

I guess we'll soon have to figure out your exact positions, but I reckon Grond was in front, examining the trap. Anyway, you need to beat the DC by 10 to shift it or bypass it while leaving it intact, so I take it that Grond just severs the line from the tripwire.

The net is now disabled.

Male Human (Alryan) Cleric 3

I'm guessing order would be something like

Grond
Ka'kara (I can't imagine she didn't pass up Sandros in her exuberence)
Sandros
Royl
Proteus (Who wonders how this place could be so busy for a "remote" cave)

Proteus wrote:
Ka'kara (I can't imagine she didn't pass up Sandros in her exuberence)

She's faster than he is, and for various reasons (heh), Sandros would prefer to have her in front of him.

Female Human Barbarian 7

Ka'kara puts her grapple away, picks up her blade from where it rests, and waits impatiently.

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

Hmm, Grond will slowly move towards the doorway, hoping to see in without being seen from within. His falchion is in hand. He signals the barbarian to stay behind him but close.

Here are new rolls for the big three:

Perception: 5+5=10
Stealth: 17+7=24
Initiative: 1+3=4

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Grond cautiously sneaks a peek around the corner. The lights have gone out by now, and he feels much more comfortable in the darkness.

The corridor opens into a narrow room, about 40 feet long but only 15 feet wide. Visible exits are a couple of openings across the room (to the east) and to the right (south).

At your end of the room there stand three four-foot high dummies filled with straw with a number of crossbow bolts sticking out of them. A few bolts are also littering the floor. Spread out near the two exits are six very nervous scaly little dog-like creatures, two crouching by the far exit and four by the one to the right, all with loaded crossbows pointing in your direction. Luckily, they don't appear to have seen you.

Blinded in the darkness I presume you mean that Proteus' Light has expired, also., Roylenna fidgets quietly and readies an action to cast Dancing Lights as soon as it sounds like Grond has engaged with an enemy.

I presumed that Proteus would recast Light as needed, but that Royl wouldn't want to interfere with Grond's Darkvision. I also presume that Grond ducks back into cover as soon as possible for fear of being spotted. Hope that does some justice to your intentions.

Now that you know what's in there (as Grond would tell you in hurried whispers), what's your plan?

Sandros makes a grimace, seen only by Grond's darkvision. "Kobolds," he whispers fiercely. "That explains the traps."

He glances around in the darkness automatically, as though he could meet the eyes of those alongside him. "From what I've heard, kobolds are clever but physically very weak. They will probably have more traps laid out for us, but if we can confront them directly, we will almost certainly obtain victory." He pauses. "They are also, I believe, the sorts of creatures that might take a man hostage for some wicked purpose."

In an innocent voice, Roylenna whispers, "Would they try to capture a little girl, too?"

Perfectly clear, Black Tom, thanks.

Sandros wrote:

From the darkness, "Give me some light and get them to fire off those crossbows and I'll confront them VERY directly." The darkness as apparently done very little to curb her enthusiasm.

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

"We need a distraction to give this barbarian her chance to rush them." Grond whispers as they prepare for the counter-ambush. Grond is rubbing his hands together as he imagines the piles of loot they must have accumulated. "I will be right behind you, Kar-kar." He hefts is massive falchion and rests it upon his brutish shoulder

"This might be your chance to try that burst of flame you told me about, little sister," Sandros grins into the dark. "That would be a distraction indeed..."

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)
Sandros Highmount wrote:

Drawing out the vowel, Roylenna quietly says, "Ooooook, I think I have an idea then. If you can wait out of sight here, I will provide both light and distraction. Here comes the light, mind your eyes."

With that, she casts Dancing Lights and pushes the lights ahead of her into the room. She starts singing a halfling lullaby, intentionally getting louder as she approaches the corner hopefully as though she's approaching from a distance. When she gets to the corner and sees the kobolds, she squeals in fear with wide eyes and turns to run down the hallway toward the rest of the party.

If circumstances allow, she will stop between the half-orc and the woman, turn around, and use her Burning Hands on the first two targets she sees.

Bluff check for "scared and running away" (1d20 7=16)

Damage from Burning Hands (15' cone, Reflex DC 14) (1d4=4)

If I can only roll a d4, at least I got all of it!

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Oh-oh. I'll grant Roylenna cover from the wall as she enters 4409 (thanks for the map, WorsT - that will save me a fortune in painkillers) and does her little girl act, triggering a fusillade of crossbow bolts.

Roylenna's lights sweep past you to illuminate the chamber, and then she herself goes her merry way, singing a soft little melody. As she turns the corner she gasps in horror as the kobolds let fly their bolts. Two of them hit her for 12 points and she falls to the floor, her song abruptly cut off.

Initiatives are as far as I can establish:

Kobolds 22 (alreay acted)
(Roylenna 22)
Proteus 19
Ka'kara 18
Sandros 10
Grond 4

And... action! Proteus, Ka'kara, Sandros and Grond are up.

Male Human (Alryan) Cleric 3

Proteus watches as the lass casts her dancing lights spell and moves the newly conjured orbs forward. She begins to whistle. The lullaby sounding very ominous. Proteus attributes it to the reverberation of the cave walls. However, he begins to experience that feeling in the pit of his stomach.

Proteus, and the rest of the group, anticipate Royl bringing the fire of the Nine Hells to her fingertips. He had seen the display once before when sending the orc on his journey through the afterlife. The fury of the blaze she commanded was impressive. Suddenly, Proteus realizes that a blaze from her tiny hands is not her intention. Proteus screams out, "Royl, No-o-o-o-o-o-o-o!" as she steps out around the corner. Before his protest ends, the twang of bow strings can be heard, too numerous to count. Time seems to stand still and Proteus can only watch as crossbow bolts whizz by Royl. One hits, striking her in the thigh and Royl goes down on one knee. Another hits her in the chest and she is flung backward and falls to her back, her body limp. Proteus sees it all as if a witness to a slow spell.

Proteus reacts with lightening speed. He rushes foward getting as close as he can to Royl. There is a noticeable quiver to his voice and it is filled with emotion as he speaks the words, "Aequo animo." Stabilize on Royl. He looks back at the rest of the group and speaks with a commanding tone that he did not know he had in him, "What are you doing just standing there? Protect her from these motherless, dog-faced, gallows fodder."

New map

Heh. Wish I could say I didn't see that coming, but sometimes a chaotic character's got to act against their player's best judgement, right? 'sides, I've been letting everyone else take all of the damage. ;-)

Shame to waste those good rolls, though.

EDIT: Hey, guys, I think they're reloading now! C'mon in! Black Tom, do I need to make stabilization checks or do you? Do I need one this round since I just fell?

EDIT 2: Never mind on the stabilization. Thanks, Proteus!

By the time Proteus looks back, Ka'kara is already by him and Grond. In her exuberance she misses the little darting reptile as her blade whistles through the air in a wide arc over its head.

she moves up so she is in melee with all 4 of the kobolds

Overhand chop on kobold (1d20+7=9, 2d6+12=19)

whoops! That is only a 7 to hit as she is not raging yet. It'd just be overkill on these lil guys. Though she might if she takes too much damage

Ka'kara Furyheart wrote:

As far as I can tell, if you were in 4011, the best you can do is get to 4710. I have reflected this on the map. If I am mistaken, I am sure someone will let me know. ;)

Ah, I think you may be right because of those damnable diagonal squares. Bummer, I wanted to take away their ranged attacks. Well, at least they have to fire into combat now.

Sandros watches in horror as Royl falls to the ground. He does not need to wait for Proteus' order to move ahead; in a fury, he rushes into the chamber, rapier already out and ready for carnage.

Sandros takes a double move. If the kobolds have drawn melee weapons yet, he stops in 4810; otherwise, he goes to 4811.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

If I know Grond at all, I guess he would rush in to get a stab at the monsters that hurt Royl, so I'm taking the liberty to post for him, to get things moving. If I'm wrong, we'll adjust that. Also I've been a little remiss on positions, but I wouldn't have a problem with Proteus moving all the way up to Royl (4309) and using Rebuke Death instead of Stabilize. After all it would make sense to stay close as the caves go dark. But it depends on where Proteus was standing.

Proteus rushes forward to give Royl the benefit of his healing and stop her wounds from hurting her even more. He roars in fury at his flabbergasted friends, and they spring into action. Ka'kara, Sandros and Grond all charge the kobolds (moving to 4710, 4811 and 4610 respectively), weapons blazing in the reflected light from Royl's luminous balls. Unfortunately both Grond's and Ka'kara's swings go wide.

The kobolds are taken aback with the sudden assault. The group near the south exit turn tail and run (giving Sandros an AoO against 4711 or 4911) into some kind of larger cavern, which also looks to be teeming with kobolds. The two kobolds to the right load their crossbows and fire at Ka'kara, (5308 stepping to 5309 to avoid the cover from the dummies). She takes one bolt to her shoulder for 6 points of damage.

Your turn (please post in any order).

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

I will assume I remain unconscious until someone tells me otherwise.

The tiny halfling's breathing eases under the caring hands of the healer.

AoO on 4711 (1d20+5=15, damage 1d6+2=7)

Sandros slashes at one of the kobolds as it flees, then turns to challenge one of the two remaining monsters as they cower against the far wall.

Move to 5210.

His rapier flashes again, seeking the blood of his foes. In particular, the foe in 5310.

Rapier attack (1d20+5=16, damage 1d6+2=5)

Male Human (Alryan) Cleric 3

Proteus didn't have the movement to get up to Royl, so he did the best he could with Stabilize.

Proteus rushes forward to 4408 and kneels beside Roylenna. He gently places his hand gripping his holy symbol on the fallen. "Insequor lecum," he speaks. Energy from within him pours into the small frame. Healing 3 points of damage.

He quickly looks around to judge how the rest of the party fares.

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

Roar. Charge. Attack.

to hit, dam (1d20 5, 2d4 4=[15, 5], [2, 1, 4])

Um... 20 to hit, 7 damage

M Half Orc 1 Rogue

Sorry about the brief post, Friday's at work are always hectic, not to mention now that Im home Im getting ready to DM my tabletop game, but my plan was (if possible) to charge the little devil in 5309 if possible. If not, Grond will round the bend and go 2X movement into the southern room, looking for a little bugger to fell.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Thanks for the clarification. I'm really just waiting to see what Ka'kara does before resolving Sandros's and Grond's actions. I don't know if there is going to be anything left to kill in the room on Grond's turn, so it's good to know that the carnage will go on anyway. This could be a lot of fun.

Female Human Barbarian 7

Now she rages and charges! (1d20+9=14, 2d6+12=19) Nice, rolling :(

Ka'kara rips the crossbow bolt free of her shoulder. A chilling transformation takes place as she begins to shake as some inner fury seems to take control. Her veins become increasingly visible across her legs, torso, arms, neck, and up the sides of her face. She screams in rage and flings herself across the room at her miniature opponent. She charges the kobold that just loosed the bolt that struck her.

Ka'kara Furyheart wrote:

For the record, I'm pretty sure you can't use Overhand Chop and charge at the same time - Overhand Chop is a standard action and charging is a full-round action, so they're mutually incompatible. It's only the difference between 16 damage and 19 damage, though, and either way I suspect that's an extremely dead kobold, unless these guys are a lot scarier than I think...!

You are of course correct, but I don't think it will matter because she probably missed yet again. Obviously she is going to take some getting used to for me. Your comments are welcome :)

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Suddenly the room is a blur of movement. As the kobolds try to flee to the south, Sandros catches one and cuts its throat, while the rest escape.

Ka'kara flies into a rage and assaults one of the little crossbowmen, but they are surprisingly nimble and she only grazes it. While Proteus keeps infusing Royl with healing spirit, Sandros joins Ka'kara and cuts down another kobold. Grond pursues the fleeing kobolds into the room to the south and crushes the head of one with his falchion.

The room to the south is rather large, twice the size of the room with the dummies, and filled with kobolds (about a dozen, not including the fleeing ones). Many of them seem a bit disoriented and rummaging to find crossbows and armor, and as Grond storms in they flee is disarray. There are two visible exits, to the east and southeast, and kobolds scurry in both directions.

Some of them take a stand, though, and pepper Grond with crossbow bolts. Luckily they aren't very good at it and out of seven bolt only one hits, for 5 points.

The kobold next to Sandros and Ka'kara, in the meantime, runs off to the east.

You're up.

"Ha! Run! Flee while you can, for you will pay for my sister's blood with your lives!" shouts Sandros, dancing a graceful arc of death across the floor. Blood drops mark the walls like stars in the night sky as he whips his rapier back and turns to join Grond in carrying the fight to the next room.

I can get as far as 4914 and still attack - if there are kobolds within range there, I will attack one. Otherwise, I will attempt to get as close to as many crossbow wielders as possible, so as to set myself for an AoO should one or more prepare to fire again.

Rapier attack (if possible or as AoO) (1d20+5=17, damage 1d6+2=7)

Proteus tries to position himself to give the benefit of healing to his comrades in 4709. "Vitae," he chants. Channelling positive energy for 6 (good dice roller) hp to Royl, Grond, and Ka'kara.

Black Tom, I have no idea where the kobolds are so I threw some into the room. Also, I gave Sandros a double move to position him by one of the kobolds but he would have 15' of movement still available from square 5015. I wasn't sure if there was a group of kobolds that Sandros could position himself near, so I just did whatever figuring you could update me. If there are any problems with locations, let me know. The crossbows signify where kobold corpses lie.

By my calculations, Royl should be concious with 3 hp.

Roylenna's eyes flutter open, confused for a moment. When she registers the cleric's concerned face looking at her, she rewards him with a dazzling smile. "Oh, that hurt! I didn't think they would shoot a little girl! They are so mean!"

She takes a move action to stand and sends a new set of Dancing Lights toward where she hears combat to aid her friends. She's going to stay very close to Proteus for a while. By the way, my math puts her at 4 hp, updated in the profile.

Next round action:

Spoiler:
A move action to stay as close to Proteus as her little legs allow, and a standard action to use her Heavenly Fire on herself.

Heavenly Fire on herself (1d6=6)

*sigh* Should have used that one on someone that needed it. But she's at full after next round, not recorded in the profile yet.
