Ka'kara Furyheart |
Lenna:
"actually, if I understand the tribes correctly, we may have something in common." She gets a bit of a faraway look in her eye as she recounts, "I grew up with a large extended family that was nearly always together. Some were entertainers, some were skilled craftsmen. Of course, as in any family, some were ne'er-do-wells, but we were always there for each other, all of us. We would settle in an area for a while, but we always grew bored eventually and moved on. I can't tell you how many towns I've lived in - some for just a few days, some for as long as a year. I understand that the tribes move around a lot as the seasons change - is that so?
"Yes, with the great herds." She draws a map in some dirt on the cave floor. "Our ancestral lands range across this area. Some kings or overlords like to think they can claim some of these lands but they mainly stay in their safe little cities not willing to face the wrath of the tribes should they try and bar our path."
"It's unusual for a Brenoien to travel away from the others as I have, but family tales say that I'm an unusual Brenoien. Several generations ago, as the family legend goes, one of our family was touched by an 'angel' that promised that in every generation there would be a child with great promise of whom there should be great expectations. Ever since, in every generation, there has been a child with white-blonde hair and pale blue or pale green eyes. Like mine. As a rule, our family has swarthy skin and dark eyes, not unlike Rana's -- but I guess you didn't really get to meet him, did you? My family has watched for something special in me since I was born and as soon as I began to manifest my... talents, they started pushing me to go out and find my great destiny. I found Grond and later Proteus and Sandros. Now, I've found you. I think the four of you are the companions I'm supposed to travel with on the way to my destiny. I'm a little nervous and a little excited all at once, but I think I'm in very good company."
"Rana? Was he the one who fled? No, I don't ever recall meeting him before." She listens with growing interest to her mention of the angel and her destiny, "Ah, a spirit warrior! That is indeed a proud heritage. Could you describe what this spirit looked like?" Hands her the stick she was drawing in the dirt with and wipes the area smooth for Roylenna to draw.
By the way, Sandros has no idea what he's talking about. Ka'kara should probably step in.
LOL, why do you think Ka'kara is going to know any better. Matter a fact she thinks it's a great idea. She's not quite as smart as you and just as unwise. Have you thought of the implications of fighting in a mist filled room for us? I have but Ka'kara hasn't

"What the angel looked like? I've never really thought of it before.... My grandmother said that the angel had hair like mine and pale skin that seemed to glow from within and pale green eyes that looked through you to your soul... But my grandmother was not born yet when the angel appeared, so I always thought she was making it up. My aunt said that he had enormous white wings, like those of a dove, that came from his shoulders... Lots of other partial descriptions from other relatives, but those were the ones I remembered, even though I really didn't believe them because there wasn't anything special or different about me. But I guess maybe there is, now.
I've only been able to throw my fire and create the lights for a few months. This is all very new to me.
Similarly, Roylenna is not thinking about the result of making a possibly large-scale fire in a room in which we are trying to fight or the smoke it will undoubtably create...
Ka'kara Furyheart |
Well, I assume we are going to head down the chute first then to "block" it off. Ka'kara isn't exactly the silent type so is Grond going to go sneaking first? Otherwise Ka'kara will take the lead. Of course if we are bringing down a bunch of brush I'm not really sure how we are going to be quiet anyway.

I believe reference was made to the external entrance to the kobolds' lair being where the brush was located and there was a vote to press the attack from that (hopefully unexpected) direction. I'm not clear regarding how to get the brush in quietly, either, but I suspect that carrying some before the leaders (like a thorny tower shield) and placing it like corks in the scarecrow room's exits would allow some reptilian crowd control -- and Roylenna could wait in the scarecrow room for fleeing kobolds to get enmeshed in the brush and light 'em up with Burning Hands. As always, I assume any plans we make will fail, but not because they are being made in full view of the DM. He's not that kind of DM. He's a generous and wonderful DM. :-D Always say nice things about the DM. ;-D They will just fail of their own accord because that's what plans do. Wow, it's time for me to go to bed. Sorry to have inflicted this on you, but since I typed it all up, I think I will submit it. G'night.

LOL. Quoted for truth: always say nice things about the DM.
Ka'kara Furyheart |
Ka'kara pulls out a hand-axe that has several decorative patterns burned into the length of the handle. She hands it to Proteus to use and then just proceeds to rip some large bushes free of the ground with her hands. She looks like she enjoys the physical work and just the fact that she is doing something rather than continuing to be cooped up in the cave. She will pile the brush next to the chute.
Black Tom |
The brush is piling up, and you can easily collect enough to block at least one passage so that it will require a Climb check to pass. Do I understand you correctly that you wish to block the passage leading to the room with the dummies and then assault the kobolds from outside?
Sandros Highmount |

That was my plan, anyway - whether anyone else was there with me I'm not entirely sure...
Ka'kara Furyheart |
Yep, and I think Grond was going sneak up and see about reseting the net trap for us
After the brush a trap have been set than Ka'kara goes over to just outside the surface cave entrance. "Probably trapped, is Grond going to take a look or should I just go in? Proteus could you cast some light on me so I can see?"
Black Tom |
Grond climbs down the chute and into the passage towards the kobold cave, only to find the net trap already reset. Contented with that he retreats and proceeds to silently stuff the corridor full with brush (at least to kobold height).
Sneaking outside, Grond finds that the entrance to the kobold caves is a narrow (3 feet) opening in the hillside, hidden behind some bushes. No kobolds are visible on the outside. Is Grond going to try to sneak a peek inside and where (how far away) will the rest of you be standing? The distance between your cave and the opening into the kobold caves is about 100 feet.
Black Tom |
I'm going to bed in a minute, so I'll push this ahead somewhat. By the way, does anyone else get a Keep of the Borderlands vibe from this part of the dungeon?
While you take up positions outside Grond sneaks in, javelin in hand. In spite of the noise you may be making outside he actually manages to catch the two very nervous kobold guards by surprise, and you may roll for initiative.
The cave can be described roughly as a 25 foot square with the entrance in the middle of one side and two 10 feet wide exits in the two opposite corners.
Give me your (approximate) positions and then roll for initiative, please.
Grond the Back-Stabber |
Surprise round, I assume?
Initiative (1d20+3=4)
Ouch.
Grond roars and hurls a javelin at the closest kobold.
Not sure how far into the cave Grond can be, but he'd like to be about 15 feet or so from the entrance.
Roylenna Brenoien |
Here are the big three, as Grond calls them:
Initative: 20
Perception: 20 (+2 for sound-base checks)
Stealth: 26
As Grond prepares to enter the cave
Roylenna will cast Dancing Lights so they are ready to send into the cave with a thought, but will keep them outside so as not to spoil Grond's surprise. Roylenna will follow Proteus' lead, remaining outside, recognizing that she should not be leading the charge.
When Grond roars and attacks
She will send her Dancing Lights into the fray, preferably directly at some silly kobold's head as though it could attack. If she has a shot with her Heavenly Fire, she will take it. Otherwise, she will prepare to move into the cave when conditions allow. She intends to remain behind Grond, Ka'kara, and Sandros as much as possible.
If she has a shot:
Ka'kara Furyheart |
Perception (1d20+3=15)
Initiative and stealth respectively (1d20=10, 1d20=16)
Initiative=10
Stealth=16
Perception=15
As soon as she hears the sounds of battle she leaps into the fray.....
.....finding the kobolds already slain or fled her shoulders slump as she shakes her head and seems to be laughing at herself...
I kind of assume that will be the situation by the time you get to my initiative
Black Tom |
Yeah, Grond gets to throw a surprise javelin from just outside the opening, but once he's in he is in full view and can't hide. Since the opening is so narrow you can't get past Grond. I'll take the liberty of rolling for his attack.
As Grond nears the cave he sees an opening and hurls a javelin at one of the kobold, but it just bounces off its armor. The kobolds take one look and run away screaming, one in each direction, while you stream into the chamber.
Keep your initiatives. What way do you want to go down, left (southeast) or right (southwest)?
Black Tom |
Not heeding Sandros's warning, Ka'kara rushes ahead and promptly triggers another net trap. She is now entangled.
You emerge into the room with the dummies where six kobolds are waiting for you, using the dummies for cover. The net trap would be at 5709, and you can count your movement from there.
The kobolds have an inititative 3, so you go first. And... action!
Sandros Highmount |
Initiatives:
Royl 20
Sandros 17
Ka'kara 10
Grond 4
Kobolds 3
Proteus 2
Sandros runs into the room, assuming that the tattooed warrior will be able to easily free herself from the kobold ropes, and recognizes the area. He immediately moves to close their trap, blocking exit to the south by moving to 4811.
Grond the Back-Stabber |
Grond rushes into the room, hoping to get close enough that he's within 30 ft of a kobold and at an angle that gets around or reduces its cover, and throws his javelin at it.
Not being more specific, because I don't know where the kobolds are exactly, but the above seems possible. Rolls, assuming that it is:
Javelin attack (1d20+4=7, damage with sneak attack 2d6+3=11)
Uh, never mind.
As before, however, the javelin merely flies wide, burying itself in one of the dummies and quivering there.
Roylenna Brenoien |
Black Tom |
Royl fumbles with the net but Ka'kara brushes her off and rushes into the room, net trailing. Sandros does the same and blocks the exit to the main room. Grond lets fly a javelin and comes into the room.
The kobolds (excepting one who is too close to Sandros for comfort all let loose a volley of darts at Ka'kara, who is an easy target. Fortunately the net soaks up most of them and she is only hit once for 1 point of damage.
Sandros, on the other hand, is subjected to a fusillade from inside the room and is hit twice for 7 points of damage.
The kobolds in the room flee to the west, right into the blocked corridor. Squeals of dismay are heard.
Now Proteus and the rest of you are up.
Ka'kara Furyheart |
I don't know if Ka'kara's initial move put her adjacent to any of the kobolds but if it did she follows up and takes a swing at one. The kobolds got only one 20' move action correct?
Swing at kobold (1d20+3=20, 2d6+6=8)
She follows the kobolds into the hallway catching one of the darting forms between the floor and the tip of her blade pinning it. her muscles flex as she forces the blade through the little writhing thing with brute strength since the net is hindering her ability to get a full swing in. Figure that's why I got minimum damage. If they were too far away then she just follows them up.
Black Tom |
Assuming that Sandros will be focussing on the kobolds to the south I'll adjudicate Ka'kara's action. It is true that the kobolds only got a single move, so they would actually be at 4109, 4208, 4209, 4307, 4308 and 4309. The dummies make it impossible for Ka'kara to charge in that direction so she can't reach them in a single move. Given all this here is my suggestion, changing Royl's action slightly. Let me know if this is acceptable.
Proteus moves up to Sandros and heals him. Royl runs up to 4608, taking cover behind a manniquin and firing her Burning Hands at the last three kobolds. One is badly singed but the other two manage to avoid the brunt of the blast. Ka'kara manages to stumble to 4409 and interpose herself between the kobolds and Royl but the net hampers her and she can't get a proper swing going.
Sandros and Grond are up.
Black Tom |
Two points of clarification: first, the circled T on the map represents the net trap, right? And, knowing where it is, can I avoid it without making rolls? (I'm thinking specifically of circling around it to the north.)
Second, the darts that hit me came from the south, through the doorway?
Yes, the T represents the net trap, and you can bypass it with a Perception check versus DC 15. The darts came from the south where six kobolds with crossbows are huddled somewhere around 4916.

I'm good with that adjustment, thanks.
Proteus |

I think I got this all updated correctly on the map. Let me know if there are any corrections.
Sandros Highmount |
Sandros looks down at the dart protruding from his arm and thigh in surprise, but even as he does, a hand touches his shoulder and healing magic washes through him. The darts pop free of his skin and fall to the floor as the wounds close, and he offers a grateful smile to Proteus. "Again, my friend," he says, nodding in thanks. The smile fades, though, as Sandros turns back to face the tiny dragon-like figures that attacked him. "More to the south!" he shouts to the others. "Watch yourselves!"
With a shout that carries both laughter and rage, Sandros rushes down on the kobolds in the next room, his rapier flashing.
Charge to 4816, attacking the kobold in 4817.
Charge attack (1d20+9=28, damage 1d6+2=6)
Crit confirm (1d20+9=10, damage 1d6+2=8)
Oh well. ;)
Also, in case it's needed:
AoO (1d20+9=20, damage 1d6+2=5)
Grond the Back-Stabber |
Grond notices the half-elf charging away from the rest of the group, but decides to leave the madman to his fate. He readies another javelin as he charges toward the cornered kobolds, making sure to put himself between them and Roylenna.
Move - not a charge, flavor notwithstanding - to 4508.
Once he gets close enough, he hurls the javelin, trying to finish off the smoldering victim of Royl's blast.
Javelin attack on whichever one of the kobolds is the one that took most of the burning hands:
1d20+4=13, damage 1d6+3=8
Man! Apparently IC just doesn't like it when I play other people's characters!
Black Tom |
Sandros gleefully charges into the midst of the kobolds, cutting one down as he goes, while Grond moves to cover Royl, throwing a javelin as he goes.
The kobold, trapped between a rock and a hard place, panic. With the exception of the one that is most hurt, who is cut down by Ka'kara as he feebly staggers away, they draw their tiny spears and mob Grond and Ka'kara, but even with Ka'kara entangled their attacks come to nought.
Surviving kobolds are in 4209, 4308, 4309, 4407 and 4408.
In the room to the south, the kobolds desperately shy away from Sandros, who cuts down another one. But as the kobolds flee away (to the southeast) he is struck from the side by a hurricane of clashing colors (precipitating a Will save against 13). The kobold sorcerer is in 5116.
Your turn.
Sandros Highmount |
Battered by a storm of colors, Sandros nevertheless maintains his focus on their source. "A mistake, my friend!" he shouts gleefully, whipping his rapier around and executing a lightning-fast lunge toward the spellcaster.
Move to 5016 and attack!
Rapier attack (1d20+7=18, damage 1d6+2=7)
Proteus |
With a shout that carries both laughter and rage, Sandros rushes down on the kobolds in the next room, his rapier flashing.
"Asclepius bless us," Proteus says as he watches an almost maniacal Sandros rush into the fangs of the foe. Then echoing his sentiment in a crafting of spell he chants, "Asclepius benedictus." Bless for all allies. +1 to attacks and saves vs. fear.
Hoping Royl can keep the others standing and worried that Sandros may be throwing himself to his death, he quickly follows Sandros' lead to 5015.
Roylenna Brenoien |
Roylenna will use her Heavenly Fire on one of the kobolds she singed, preferably not one in melee. I'm looking at 4307 as a likely target.
Heavenly Fire with bless attack, damage (1d20 6=10, 1d6 1=7)
Peering around the practice dummy, Roylenna misjudges her shot and strikes the wall above her target.
Ka'kara Furyheart |
After watching the crossbow bolts whizz harmlessly past her and the small darting lizards unable to land any solid blows Ka'kara says,"Hah! The spirits are with us this day! Die little mongrels!" She manages to free her blade enough to inflict a grievious wound splattering the carvern wall with gore.
Swing at another kobold (1d20+3=15, 2d6+6=13) actually a 16 with the Bless
Black Tom |
I'll just roll for Grond, then.
Proteus steels your souls with holy resolve while Royl's fire narrowly misses. Sandros slashes at the sorcerer while Grond and Ka'kara each cut down a kobold.
Grond and Ka'kara easily brush the kobold's spears aside, and the sorcerer turns tail and runs, but behind him appear four more kobolds that pepper Sandros with bolts, two of which hit for 8 points of damage.
The six fleeing kobolds stop and load their crossbows, pointing at Proteus and Sandros.
The four new kobolds are standing around 5813, while the six fleeing ones are now at about 5420. Only three kobolds are left facing Grond and Ka'kara.
You're up.
