clueless in Magnimar (The Skinsaw Murders)

Rise of the Runelords

Hello everyone,

The group I am DMing just defeated Justice Ironbriar. It seems apparent that they will not be able to figure out how to use the ravens or decipher Ironbriar's coded journal, so they will not be able to find Xanesha. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do with them in the meantime, so that they can handle The Hook Mountain Massacre? I was thinking of running them in a Gamemastery adventure.

Another concern is that they might go to the authorities and tell them what happened in the Seven's Sawmill. Should they be arrested on the spot for killing a justice? Any ideas? Thank you.

That's a death fight anyway. Let her escape and show up later in the path, to curse the PCs for ruining her plans in Magnimar!

Grand Lodge

When they go to the authorities, have a local magistrate decipher Ironbriar's journal. That will prove their innocence as well as get them back on track.

My group wanted to tell the Lord Mayor as well and went to his home as it was later in the evening. I made him "Unavailable" but his guard came out to harass the PCs. Who's going to believe a story about masked Jesters and dread ghasts when it comes from some unknown PC.

Good luck

Ditto to the previous post. If the PCs can't decipher the journal, a local magistrate should be able to help. The group could be arrested, but a brief investigation should reveal plenty of evidence against Ironbriar.

Spoiler:
Then if you feel your group may not be up to tackling the Clock Tower, the magistrate may also send soldiers to assist. If you don't think that is enough, some DMs have posted that they swapped out Xanesha for the other lamia in Hook Mnt. .

Definatly Arrest them for the murder of a Government official. They should be condenmed to death and in cells with others who might be talking about rumors before anyone considers releasing them...

The Snap of distant locks roused them from their troubled slumber.
"Looks like your time is up." Fral Durner smilled a crooked grin from his cell.

A Dozen Guardsmen and a Bureaucrat stopped at their Cell. The Lacky nodded and a Guardsman stuffed a key in a hole and turned it.

"The Justice has a few more questions..."

That's what I did. They arrived in city hall with Ironbriar's head, intent on bounty, and asked "what will we get for this one?" The answer was "life if you're lucky, but more likely the rope".

Heh, I love it! *chuckles*

I agree. Arrest puts some pressure on, but allows you to use the resources of the Court to feed the PCs the Clock Tower

Spoiler:
My favorites are the human faces stretched out over frames. I added an extra Cleric level to Ironbriar and gave him Craft Wonerous Item. He was making the faces of his vicitms into the masks the cultists wear. I game with pretty experienced players, but even they winced at that.

Thank you for your replies. They did get arrested and had to wait in jail for eleven days.

The authorities told them about the Shadow Clock. When the party asked the authorities why they did not arrest the Wanton of Nature's Pagan Forms, they replied that they could not get past the big stitched-up thing at the base of the tower.

I will probably not have Xanesha in the tower because my party would get slaughtered by her in that venue. I might switch as suggested by Gray, or I might have her ambush them on the way to Hook Mountain.

I did have my party fight Xenesha and she might have won but they knocked her down enough hit points so that she fled. In the path I have had a couple of creatures flee who might have pulled a TPK. The group is really worried they will see them again and that they creatures are actually the Runelords. The suspense is killing them.

They are trying to assault the Fotress of the you know who's and have had to flee twice. Right now they are licking their wounds in Magnimar (they own Aldren's townhouse now) and next Saturday they will teleport back to the Fotress to try and bring down the giants... Ah, I love the smell of crushed PCs in the morning.
