Sacrificing two schools gives you a list of powers or an extra spell per level they balance out close enough. But the universalist still gains spells and the forbidden game breaker of easy meta magic for your highiest level spells (shame on you sudden meta magic).
Yeah, WOTC got really addicted to the idea of free and reduced costs of metamagic about four years ago, not realizing that it really blows the power curve out of the water on spells.
In my campaign (Living Planar), I don't allow free or reduced metamagic to be applied to a spell unless you could cast a spell of that level already. Simple fix, and lets people still use rods, sudden empower, stuff like that, but stops the worst excesses.
Now Paizo is giving 10 free levels of metamagic to universalists a day... it's probably the only major issue I have with Pathfinder. It's the difference of a wizard casting a 24d6 (or 84 damage) meteor swarm, and casting a twinned admixtured empowered meteor swarm for the equivalent of 144d6 or 504 damage. That's a nice gift to give to a class that hasn't lost their bonus spells per day.

One of the problems is that people actually comment about things without actually testing them. Everytime something new comes out someone does the "OMG THATS BROKEN" dance ... but the sky rarely falls since it fell years ago anyway.
I don't belive in "downbalance" for the record in general, but I was surprised that I do like the changed made to the Cleric, druid not so much but its something I suppose.... I do think that the warriors could have gotten more... they need more still...
... whatever that feat is that lets you add sneak attack damge to crits, and Martial Outlaw (the one that lets you stack fighter levels for sneak attack) ...
