As Alessia runs up the giant swings his chain around
[dice=AoO atkdam]1d20+19;2d6+14
I was under the impression that moving into (as opposed to out of or through) a threatened square doesn't provoke an attack of opportunity, with the only exception being if you're running (3x move, as opposed to just taking two regular move actions). Not that I can't soak 15 damage, I just wanted to make sure I'm understanding things correctly here.

Patrick Curtin |

Ah. I was under the impression that if you advanced into a threatened area without an attack option available due to all actions being movement then that would trigger an AoO. I've been looking through the rules, and oddly, I cannot find a solid clear answer about it. It says moving triggers an AoO, but trying to quantify that is difficult.

Patrick Curtin |

OK. Rules folks. Let me bring this forward. If in a normal 5’ reach scenario, if you advance to meet a foe but you are unable to attack that round because all your actions were movement , does that trigger an AoO? The rules are annoyingly coy about it. There’s not even an entry for ‘double move’ on the 8.2 table of AoO.

The attacks have nothing to do with AoO, it's moving out of a threatened square that provokes, if I just ran around someone with my 30 move I'd provoke an AoO every time I left a threatened square. Charging enemies with reach almost always provokes because they just threaten a far greater range and thus someone with a normal 5' reach has to provoke at last once, if not more, just to get within range. There are of course ways to avoid AoO, breaking line of sight, like becoming invisible, using acrobatics, and also opponents don't have unlimited AoO.
Edit: The other thing I forgot to mention is the 5' step, if all your movement is just a 5' step that doesn't provoke an AoO. Stepping 5' towards or away will not provoke even if you're moving out of a threatened square.

No, there's two ways of provoking, moving out of a threatened square, or preforming an action inside a threatened square that would provoke, like casting a spell, drinking a potion, or standing up from prone. Running is a full round action that would normally provoke an AoO, but that's a) four times movement speed, b) in a straight line, a double move or a charge don't provoke in of themselves, BUT moving out of a threatened square while preforming these actions will provoke an AoO. Your Giants have a 10ft reach, and thus threatens I30, L30, M30, N30, O30, P30, and Q30, Alessia does not provoke for moving into O31, but she does provoke for leaving N30, O30, or P30 (whichever route she took).

Wow, didn't realize HOW long it had been since I actually rule-ified stuff.
O_o
I think that Guy is correct. Everything sounds right, you provoke by LEAVING a threatened spot, or performing an action that itself provokes (casting, drinking potion, etc) IN a threatened spot. ENTERING or ENDING in a Threatened spot should not itself provoke an AoO.
But I confess that MY mind is a jumble of 3.0, 3.5 & PF. So My input should be considered with a BIG grain of Rock Salt! :)

I'm in much the same boat--
I very well could be dead wrong, and as I said, I've got no problem letting the attack stand; I just wanted to know which variant of the rules we're using so I can plan better next time.
Edit: I couldn't find an answer for Pathfinder, but I got one for Dungeons & Dragons, which I assume works in a similar way. Maybe? There's a reason I really like rules-lite systems...

OK I think Guy is right also. So, the current AoO attacks now stand because giants have 10’ reach, and by engaging them you ‘left’ a threatened square to reach them. In the future arriving in a threatened square with a combatant with only a 5’ reach without an attack action handy will NOT trigger an AoO.
And I am also in the same boat with the rules getting mixed up, but mine goes back to 1e and 1979. There was no AoO then. Heck we didn’t have THACO.

ROFL<
Oh you HAD to go there! You HAD to remind me of the time BEFORE THACO!
(Man, I hate being reminded that my 'aged wizzie' persona is no longer entirely an act!) ;P

Regarding whats going on in the side quest thread,
I have an idea for a hopefully interesting, (Hopefully entertaining) conversation between Justin and Memnon when they are alone.
PLEASE feel free to add to it when we get there!
In my imagination, it ranges from 'Amusing' to 'Hysterical'
(Buuut, we all know I'm easily entertained!) ;P

Ragadolf |

I'm going to try to make myself a schedule,
Between my work, my home improvements, my entertainments, (which includes these PbP's and playing with my friends online) I'm not actually accomplishing as much as I should/could.
This includes the oft-delayed Wizzie's journal. The next chapter is actually copied-pasted, (and started the next one after) but needs for me to go through and do the edits before posting it.
These threads are actually making me WANT to get it done! :D

Are we all planning on, like the devil, riding the dinosaur? Or are we charging in on foot?

Ragadolf |

Well, there's enough room for whoever wants to ride I think. :)
Skirmishers may want to stay on foot, so they can spread out? Or do that once we hit the edge of the camp?
I just figured it was a really impressive, fun way for us to ride and make an entrance!
ANd possibly it can whallop a giant to protect those riding it if need be? :)

Ragadolf |

Well, the post reaction to Justin signing the infernal contract is up. So have fun writing up the aftermath. Memnon should have some fun things to say..
Argh, Afetrword is done. (I talk/write too dang much) ;P
I don't think Memnon took it too easy on Justin. (?)
ANd Justin pretty much knew he had it coming, so,.... ;P

Patrick Curtin |

Lol. Good luck in getting Marconi to consider going after the Circle as one of the favors. The terms of the contract are he has to invoke the favor, and he doesn’t have to - he knows Justin will go anyway.
Oh and since Justin didn’t read the contract thoroughly, let me lay a few game mechanics on you.
Justin is now bound by an infernal contract. He can be summoned (as the spell) by the holder of a favor coin. He is bound to the task presented by a Geas spell (CL 20). The spell is structured so that he has to either finish the task or suffer some pretty severe penalties if he does anything else. If he works at the task for a year and a day without success (or he takes the crippling penalties for not complying) that is considered fulfilling the task and he is released. The coins are transferable by the owner, as Justin just saw.

Ragadolf |

There are a few high-level antidotes to the Geas, but using those to break a duly-signed infernal contract is not wise.
Cool,...
I mean, NOT cool for Justin, but yeah,... ;P
I figured it was a Geas (or similar-magic) enforced contract.
The summoning via coin is a real time-saver for the holder of the favor, thats for sure. (Reminds me of some coins we had in another game of I was in,)
Yeah, I totally, in RL & game, jumped the gun. Completely. If I could, I would totally go back and re-do that scene with the whole read-every-word- thing that HArry did in the books. ;)
Just to be clear! NOT complaining! Justin totally got himself into this. He can get himself out. Eventually. ;P
(Besides, THIS is more fun for both of us.) :)
I MEANT to do so much more, as Justin explained, but didn't want to bog down the momentum we had going. (You SEE what happens once I start typing) ;P
And, well, my mind started racing,... and,... sigh,...
Patience IS a virtue.
It's just not MY virtue. :P
I figured you'd let me get away with 'I skimmed it', but since I didn't actually read the contract, please feel free to do whatever you have to do to poor Justin as a result. O_o
Well,... Almost whatever you have to? ;P
As you had Marconi so aptly note, Justin IS usually much more canny than that. :O
The good news? Since we both know the source material, Justin 'knows' (hopes? Expects?) Marconi to provide actually useful & complete information (As complete as he has) on the Redoubt. After all, we both know that Marconi wants Justin to take care of these upstarts for him. And that he fully intends to take credit in the Underworld circles as the one who arranged for it to be done. :)
Yeah, speaking of talking/typing too much,... I gonna give it a rest now. (I need to save some of my verbage for the GAME!) :)
Sigh- have I mentioned, THIS week, how much I love this game? :D

Patrick Curtin |

Lol. It’s all good. I won’t torture Justin too much. I can’t believe you didn’t haggle or read the document though. Plus you had your own magical Wikipedia floating nearby and you never asked for help!
And yes, you’ve handed the GM THREE adventures in one! Not to mention getting Murph out (that’s four!) Wait until you see the information Marconius sends you! Oh this is going to be good!

Ragadolf |

Le Sigh, Like I said,... ;P
Its a shame that I, the wizard's player, am not as good a writer as the author of the wizardly inspiration. :)
On the plus side, as I said, more fun for us! :)
(Well, especially you, but yeah, us) ;)
Yep. This will be good!
Wait,... when a GM says 'Good',
Is that 'Good' as in 'Good'?
Or the Orwinian 'Good', as in 'Bad'?!?!
O_o
<redoubles his efforts on spell research,...>

The Uncanny Eye just dropped a fantastic illustration of the party. Since a large amount of you aren’t on Facebook, I am putting a copy in the gaming folder
ALL HAIL THE UNCANNY EYE!
Looks fantastic.
I like Alessia the best of them all though :-)

That looks pretty good, I always imagined Karrin being a bit more slight than that, a bit closer to Sophie's size, and the axe handle a lot longer, but that's quibbling, whoever drew this has a unique style and is a talented artist. Wish I knew who it was, but in their place I'll thank Eldritch Mr. Shiny

Luv the style of the artist. Thanks!

Actually I apologize for the wait. There’s been a lot going on on my end. I hope to post up this AM.
No worries, I was thinking it was us PCs dragging our feet. Who posts first?
