DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Meh. You didn’t confirm, so just the one

To clarify-- the energy drain isn't from the sword, it's from Alessia being a cairn wight.

d20PFSRD wrote:
A cairn wight is an advanced wight that fights with a weapon, typically a sword, that channels its energy drain attack and affects creatures damaged by the weapon as if they had been struck by the wight’s slam attack.

The sword's actual enhancements are an increased critical threat range and an enhancement bonus that increases vs. a single opponent each time that opponent is damaged.

Universal Monster Rules wrote:
Energy Drain (Su) This attack saps a living opponent's vital energy and happens automatically when a melee or ranged attack hits. Each successful energy drain bestows one or more negative levels (the creature's description specifies how many). If an attack that includes an energy drain scores a critical hit, it bestows twice the listed number of negative levels. Unless otherwise specified in the creature's description, a draining creature gains 5 temporary hit points for each negative level it bestows on an opponent. These temporary hit points last for a maximum of 1 hour. Negative levels remain until 24 hours have passed or until they are removed with a spell, such as restoration. If a negative level is not removed before 24 hours have passed, the affected creature must attempt a Fortitude save (DC 10 + 1/2 draining creature's racial HD + draining creature's Cha modifier; the exact DC is given in the creature's descriptive text). On a success, the negative level goes away with no harm to the creature. On a failure, the negative level becomes permanent. A separate saving throw is required for each negative level.

I think I am reading that right, but I am notoriously sucky at rules-fu

No, you're right. That rule is nuts.

The SHORT, easy-to-understand version of THAT rule is,...

DON'T get hit with a Crit by an energy drain! :P

Nice pic of the PC Shiny! :)

So just making sure, THAT was the end of Round 1, AND we entered round 2?

I have a tendency to jump early, dont want to add to the confusion if I can avoid it! :)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Yeah we were just waiting on Blayze. I reached out to Mark/Vulcan on FB, and he is having some RL insanity at the moment. I think things are going well enough where we can say that Blayze is holding her action for now, and just head into the next round.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Also - waking up at 130 AM ... WTF?

Anyway, there’s a new post in the side quest thread for you Justin

Kevin-did you have an idea for Merle?

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Ok Mark posted, so round two is in effect. I’ll get a new map soonish, and after Merle goes the Xorn’s will take whatever actions they have left to them.

Hi Jess!

I hadn’t heard from you in a while, but if you are still interested in playing I can make it work. Just let me know

EVERYONE'S RL is crazy right now! :)

Some of us are just crazier than others.

Hang in there guys and gals!
Prayers and well-wishes for all!

WONDERFUL set up Monkey-Man! :)

SO, MUCH, POTENTIAL (For Justin to get himself in to trouble) ;P

Honestly, If I were writing a book, I honestly wouldn't be able to decide which way to go. Beautiful. Love it!

Give me a bit to percolate on this one. :)

I've been reading along with some of the sidequest thread, and I have to ask-- how the hell do you write so much so fast? It sometimes takes me days to think of a single line of dialog for one of my characters, and it seems like you write a page or two ever couple hours. (This applies to you too, Patrick.)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

*shrug*. Honestly I couldn’t tell you. I will say when the muse hits I am a good writer, I always am, false modesty aside. The issue with my muse is that she is a fickle b*tch at best. This format I can write, back and forth dialog, it’s basically stream of consciousness, like I’m watching a movie and writing it down.

Most of the times I’ve tried to write short stories and books, I get locked up in writers block. Same with game products. I started out at the same time as Mike Welham and Paris Crenshaw in Allen Taleisin’s short-lived company Clockwork Gnome. I literally couldn’t write my assignment, I stared at a blank page for weeks. Now they have credits in Paizo books and 3PP publications and I’m a schmo doing a PbP. So, I’ll take what I can get. This game scratches what little writing itch I get.

LOL<

Well, Pat's writing skills far surpass mine, I think I can say with total honesty.

I take at LEAST a paragraph to say what he does in one evocative sentence. When itr comes to words, I never got the whole 'less is more' thing. ;P

I LIKE making stuff up, (background for PC's, magic items, adventure ideas) but I'm not really GOOD at it, especially the game-rules stuff. Spent too long in 1st Ed with a lot of fellow "I dont see a rule for it, so lets make one up and keep going!" types.

(I have always been like this, In college when others in English were turning in 1-2 pages, I'm turning in 5-10. In Theater when doing character background/development writing, others were doing a paragraph or two, I was writing a page or two) :P

Most of the stuff I come up for THIS character is all based off of the writings of the inspiration. I just try to write it in such a way as to be like the author/character that I enjoy so much.

What I AM good at, (for good or ill) is talking. ;P
If you think I WRITE too much, dont get stuck in a conversation with me unless you have an escape plan! ;)

(What? I'm honest.) :)

TBH, I'm just writing all of this stuff, (sidequest, journal, etc) to entertain myself.
IF I can entertain the Dungeon Monkey and the players who let me have fun with them too, BONUS! :)

They’re going to be hot buttered soon I’m thinking

Dear old-timers,

This being pretty much the first time I've ever played a "tank" type character (that wasn't also a spellcaster) in many years of playing RPGs, I'm running into an issue: how do I effectively "draw aggro"?

I'm used to playing rogues and wizards, so I'm usually more concerned with clever tactics and avoiding the action. In this case, though, I built a character that's basically a damage sponge, with only moderate damage output. Unfortunately, I'm realizing that I don't really know how to use the character I made to the group's advantage.

Help?

Sincerely,

- 20 Years of Bad At D&D (which dice do I roll to hit again?)

Could be worse. I keep mentally auto-correcting "xorn" to "Gorn."

The problem with ‘drawing aggro’, as in a video mmo, is that the GM is not an AI. Gamers have learned to ping mob’s attention over the years, but that is more a function of algorithm than anything else. My monsters will attack squishier folks, just because if they have intelligence they know that:

1. They are easier to hit and kill
2. They are usually high DPS outputters , which can mean bad things for them.

Now, you can mitigate this in a few ways.

1. Position yourself in front of a monster and make sure the squishy folks stay out of range. AoO is your friend.
2. Coordinate with the magic using folk to do some battlefield control. Control monster, summon, wall of X. Set something on fire with a fireball.
3. Coordinate with the other shields. Mel is built to be a tanking healer, he could be an effective wingman. Plus being neutral he can ‘heal’ you with inflict spells if needed.
That’s about what I’ve got

OK, so just standing directly in front of the enemy is a valid tactic after all. AoOs are definitely something I take into consideration, though flanking isn't really an option in this most recent fight.

Coordinating with other party members has crossed my mind, but the real trick is figuring out how to do it in character, especially here. Any suggestions?

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Hmm. That is a toughie. I know Alessia is as anti-social as they come. Would there be any room for character evolution? Perhaps she sees Mel and he reminds her of her days as a paladin, perhaps evoking wistful longings for what once was.

You could even go a step further and send Alessia on a quest to regain her mortal condition. It is possible ...

Shhesh!@ I miss ONE lil day due to busy stuff (repainting the kids bathroom is FAR more difficult and time-consuming than first anticipated) ;P

You all can post like the dickens! Catching up!

-(EDIT-) Oooo, cool ideas.

Although if Alessia just shouted out (in character of course)
"Get behind me you bunch of skinny, wimpy breathing wusses!" that would work for Justin.
;)

Certain classes haeve built-in abilities to draw enemy attacks, either using magic or challenge like abilities but otherwise as a tactic it's tricky to pull off.

Bit of an adjustment going fro 2-3 posts every couple weeks to 30 in a day. Will get caught up.

*shrug*

It’s the times. I’m stuck inside, and I need distraction

I just realized-- Alessia has a 60' rope of climbing and a grappling hook. Would that be of any use?

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

If she wanted to scurry up to it, it would. But it’s a moot point at the moment, as you folks managed to do enough damage to kill it (with a bit of assistance from Mel)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Just spent a fun evening reading Justin’s adventures all over again. Great stuff!

Here’s an interesting continuity question though...

Thomas ... how did he end up in Sigil? As Justin’s Half brother?

Here’s a possible take on the scenario. Let me know what you think Rags:

In Justin’s backstory it is mentioned that his father traveled a lot. Now, the White Court translated into Sigil is a bit different than the Dresden books. They are a demonic blooded race of emotional vampiric beings. Their original ancestor is Malcanthet, the mother of succubi, and her corrupting blood has run true for ages in her hybrid offspring (this also means that Thomas has some very interesting Great-aunts and uncles!)

Anyway, the White Court clans are essentially matriarchal, due to the influence of Malcanthet (much as Lolth has fashioned the Drow). Thomas’ mother would be the leader of clan Saunders (why didn’t you stay with Raith BTW?), and a seasoned planes traveler. At some point she traveled to Justin’s world and seduced his father. The Saunders clan is very fertile, and Thomas has a dozen half siblings, including Lara, who is now a factor in the Sensates. Lara’s father was a seduced celestial, making her a very powerful individual with both the demonic and angelic bloodlines within her.

Wow. THATS a cool twist.
(As to why I didnt stick with Raith, I was trying to change teh names up and not be TOO obvious about it) :)

'Saunders' could be a family name OF "Clan Wraith"? Even a tight knit family, but large (IE=CAtholic) do not all share the same last names. :)

I like your take on it.
I always 'presumed', (never sweated the details until now) that Justin's dad traveled teh planes and visited Sigil at least once, where he was seduced (willingly or not) and may not have even known that he left behind another son.

Either way, it fits into your interpretation of Thomas' history adjusted for Sigil. Yes?

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

That sounds like we are pretty much in the same ballpark
