I've tried making maps on GIMP and Photoshop, too, but Illustrator just beats them hands down for speed of use. It is designed to do exactly what I'm doing, as opposed to the others, which are used primarily for photography and are filled with features you don't need, and those features you do need are not quite as handy.
There are other vector art programs, I'm pretty sure Corel Draw would work for example, and it's cheaper.
Like I said, seeing a trial version and mucking around with it might be a really good idea. If you do get a copy of Illustrator I'll send you some of my files - seeing what a built up map looks like will give you a great head start.
Also, my maps are pretty simple. I don't bother with textures because it takes a lot of time to clean them up, so they have a cartoony look to them. I can't be bothered to build up the really suave look of the latest version of campaign cartographer. On the other hand, there are almost NO limits to what you can do with Illustrator whereas CC is limited by the imagination of the program's creators.

I guess GIMP and Campaign Cartographer 3 would also make a pretty good combo for pbps, but I can't really comment on what it'd be like to use them.
I bought Illustrator because I actually use it for art outside of gaming.
Sorry to intrude; there is a skin for Gimp that provides a pseudo-Photoshop interface (gimpshop).
One last thing about Illustrator over CC3...
I don't think I could have done anything close to that cliffside map with CC3, and it would have taken a lot longer on Photoshop.

GIMP really is an awesome program. If I was starting over again I would probably have just stuck it out with GIMP. A lot of new features are being added on and it's getting pretty powerful.

As you've mentioned several times, the open source likeness of Photoshop is GIMP.
There's also an open source likeness of Illustrator called Inkscape.If you want to dive into 3D there's Blender.

I'm kind of anal about figuring out my own PCs, but as a DM I'm a little lazy... I've never gone through your characters to make sure they add up. Sometimes I notice if something is WAY off, but otherwise I usually miss errors. My policy is that I just like to read the fluff and leave the rest up to you.
So, I'll try and have a look, but if something is amiss I can't promise I'll catch it.
