I did not know where to put this since it did not fit one category so I am putting it into General.

I am all into simplifying Combat and one of the things that slows combat down is keeping track of durations of effects *Be it spells, Feats, Class abilities Etc*

It is annoying using something that lasts rounds/minutes or hours and keeping track of that to know when the effect starts are ends.

My suggestion to simplify things is to put it into 5 categories.

Instantaneous: same as 3.5 rules
Short: Lasts 1 round
Medium: Last duration of Encounter
Long: Last 24 hours
Permanent: same as 3.5 rules.

Get rid of this last so many rounds/minutes/hours. It is a pain tracking that.

This is my first go on this idea so if anyone wants to add to it..please do.

I can't possibly see everything this could effect, so this idea could break things.. I am hoping not though,

I would like to see this as well.
Q: "How long does this effect last?"
A: permanent
or
A: 1 round
or
A: till the character rolls their save
or
A: 1 day
or
A: till the encounter ends

no tracking turns/rounds/minutes etc.

as a DM that would be a relief for my overcrowded brain.

I like this. One effect it'll have is toughen spellcasters a bit more at lower level; i.e., no more 1st level wizards wondering when to cast their mage armor while in the dungeon. Make the spell's duration "Long" and they're good to go. (Until they run out of offensive spells for the day. Where's that crossbow...?)

hum this is a good ideal and i could get behind something like that I hate what 3.5 did to spell durations
