Well, I got Pett's Still Waters adventure from the indulgences #2.
I'll try running it after a few more things; it's for 6th level but it looks like the 8 of you guys at level 5 could take it on pretty well.
I'll have to fit it in to my game somehow, but there's a swamp nearby Saltmarsh so it shouldn't be too too hard. Seems to me at the rate we're going it'll be in two months.

Right now they're in a room in the slaughterhouse basement, one door out besides the one they came in.
There's two fat ghouls that Becton's turned, two are dead.
Altai's questioning them about stuff--the Sawfish boys that run the mill, two of which you guys fought back at the house (I think you were here for that)--have kidnapped Beldan's girl cause they want you guys to hit the boat when it gets there, and give them the stuff on the boat. Well, you all decided to rescue her.
One of the remaining Sawfish boys took off; one turned into a weresawfish and fought them in the basement.
A bunch of guys dressed as Pelorite pilgrims showed up at the slaughterhouse; Altai and Elgan saw that doing surveillance...
Beldan got hit by the weresawfish, and might be a lycanthrope now, nobody knows.
Still haven't found the girl.
This room has two furnaces and two pits filled with green slime.
There's bagpipe music from further on in the basement.
Oh, and they fought a half dragon pitbull,
and there's a guy named Maa-vin who shot everybody in the building upstairs before the group came in. Nobody knows who or what Maavin is, but he talks from the rafters of the slaughterhouse, and a dog named Maavin talked to Elgan outside; a little Benjy dog.
Maavin shoots them in the top of the head with tiny black arrows, but he's not down here now because he doesn't do basements at all.
Damn. I hope this post doesn't get eaten.

IDK--it was a ghoul with the ogrekin template specifically the obesity bonus and minuses; then I think I gave it 1 more h.d. when I should've given it 2 more h.d. and then I added in the grease effect cause I thought it was cool and jacked up. So I don't know if I could publish the thing; maybe a slightly altered version.
I think if they had 1 more h.d., the grease effect combined with the closeness of the green slime pools might have been a more interesting battle...
I keep trying to recalibrate the battles, but it's hard sometimes--I almost did 2 half-dragons before, but all that 6d8 breath weapon action, 2 of them means somebody's definitely gonna die.
I keep looking at this "encounter calculator" thing linked to the SRD and I thought it would give me a decent guideline of what's a good fight, but it's kinda hit-and-miss. According to them, your party of 8 guys at 3rd level is an EL5, so those ghouls at EL7 should've been a really challenging battle. Yet I know that just giving them 1 more h.d. would've been better; I just kinda figure out in my head how much damage you all can dish out in two rounds of decent hits and go from there...so I'm going back to that modus operendi.
I guess I'm in the Goldilocks conundrum. I might just start fudge/nerfing stuff; like give the 1/2 dragon pitbull a 3d8 breathweapon every other round and 15 more h.p.--stuff like that.
I thought the weresawfish was a decent fight though.

Don't sweat it Heathy. If one combat is a pushover it isn't gonna matter. Sometimes we get to feel like powerful heroes. If every combat tests our limits we are gonna get jaded like "even if it is one damn gobbo it's gonna take us to the limit of our resources to down it...". I had a DM who thought that designing combats was to take the group to the edge, it got old quick.
Now just hit harder in the next combat. We can take it.....hopefully!
You have been doin' great so far.....no complaints from me.

Right on. I'm just bein a drama queen.
Also, the whole Riese is gay thing had me stumped; didn't know how to come up with a story about it.
He is a stuck up snob, if you throw dudes at him he is probably gonna turn up his nose at them. I will be looking at NPCs with a keen eye to see if anyone will fit the bill (I think a smart Matthew Mcconaughey or a Heath Ledger type would be just dreamy!).
edit- Oh good lord! I hate when I 'immerse' myself too much in my PCs.

Nice! This is the reason I love templates - love, love, love them.
As for encounter power, I grew up with DMs who thought that 2 12th-level monsters were well balanced against 5 5th-level PCs... After that, nothing shocks me.
CR really messes with me, man. It never works out like it's described in the DMG. And with PRPG rules it's even more messed up.

So Matt McC from Dazed and Confused is out...

Well.....maybe just a one-nighter....he is horribly sexy!

I think Riese would be pretty choosy – whoever he went for would need to be very intelligent, but probably not more (or as) intelligent than him. He’d also need to be either very interested in Riese (‘cos if he was not very interested, Riese would be too self absorbed to notice) or else not at all interested (which Riese may see as a challenge he must overcome).
Yeah, CR and judging what should be a tough fight and what is not is tricky. And undead are always a bit weird anyway if you’ve got a cleric, cos things often come down to the roll of that turning dice.
I had one of my PbP groups (5 2nd level PCs) go up against a CR3 Quasit (1 level of sorcerer); it killed one of them, and got away from the rest. In my other game I set a CR4 snake against the 5 1st level PCs – they killed it in one round while suffering no injuries or significant expenditure of resources themselves.

Yeah Mothman, that's the joy of magic, it can turn ANYthing on it's ear! :)
One good, (or a couple of decent ) rolls from a cleric can turn a looming undead apocalypse into a walk in the park. Or a couple of the right spells, (Sleep or Color Spray anyone?) can turn a low HP annoyance into a low-level party TPK! ;P
Which is one of the things I have always liked about this game. (Of course, I like it better when it works FOR me and not AGAINST me!) ;P
If this was a low to no magic game, figuring out the monsters would be as easy as (1)character's accuracy + (2) Character's damage output = (3) How tough the monster needs to be to put up a fight.
But with magic (or even really clever players who use caltrops and lamp oil) you have to account for characters who turn a monster-laden and trapped hallway into a slip-n-slide/monster quisinart!
Personally, I think your doing great Heathy! Just because we got lucky on the dragon/pitbull (Where do you demented minds come UP with stuff anyway?!?) Doesn't mean your logic/planning is off. As you pointed out, if it had gotten off it's breath weapon, it would have been a DRASTICALLY different encounter!
You just keep doing doing what your doing, and we'll keep throwing you curveballs! SOunds like fun for everyone! :)

The thing about the chubby ghoulies is that they were very memorable. You are doing very well in the "wtf..?" stakes - I'm fairly sure I know what the horsies are but the bagpipe/frog-thing is confusing me big time. This is a very memorable campaign - weird in a very good way.

Cool--the horsies were my attempt to make the normal freakish a la the talking woof...I'll narrow Danny Boy down; he's not a slaad.
I actually thought 'Bullywug Bard' when I saw him....

Keep in mind he has surgically integrated musical instruments - this is a Bionic Bullywug Bard.
This is intensely cool.

Embrace your geekhood.......Borg Bullywug Bard!
"Eat frost, MFer!" I almost couldn't type it....
LOL

Cool--I posted on a Still Waters thread at Sinister's site; I said I'd run it modded for Saltmarsh in a couple months maybe...
Pett came on and said his group is in Saltmarsh tomorrow nite, and am I stalking him, or is he stalking me?
So,...look out guys if you're walking around Saltmarsh,...;)

Ragadolf |

Hey all, just FYI,
I had to go to the hospital and get an infection taken care of.
I don't feel so good, so I'll probably post slow to NO the next day or so.
(Stoopid meds kick my @$$ worse than the infection!)
Hopefully I'll see you all soon with full wind in my sails, and a full case of 'shifter rage' for the bad guys!
Laters,

We should hook up some sort of cross-over ...
