Heh. Interesting. (makes not to self)
Actually, with all of the weird stuff that Japan is known for making up (especially in Anime/sci-fi) You'd think that something tame like that wouldn't phase them much. Huh. 'Who Knew' indeed? ;P
Now, watching samurai movies on Youtube, I may have to check that out. I've never even seen the Seven Samurai! (I know I know, 'Infidel!') ;)

Plus four mithral daggers and two blank scrollbooks and the necessary materials to scribe spells into said spellbooks.
I believe that leaves her with some more cash for miscellaneous gear that I have not determined yet, but this is the lion's share of the purchasing she wants to do.

She'll be spending a lot of her downtime scribing spells, as you can tell. I kind of minimized my spell selection to get her off the ground and this just seems like a great opportunity to legally improve her options.
'course, with the other spellcasters in the group, she's probably just going to prepare nothing but touch spells so she can spellstrike all day long. ;) But it's nice to have options.

Emrael Bladewalker |

lol, if I read the rules for such correctly, it will take days to scribe these. 87 hours' worth of scribing, in fact.
Emrael will stay up and do as much as possible, but she still requires her rest for her spells.

They're 1d8, 18-20x2, and they have the "deadly" condition:
"When this weapon delivers a coup de grace, it gains +4 to damage when calculating the DC of the Fortitude saving throw to see whether the target of the coup de grace dies from the attack. The bonus is not added to the actual damage of the coup de grace attack. Source: Ultimate Combat."

Well, there aren't many (any other?) one handed weapons that do d8 damage and have an 18-20 crit modifier (generally you need to go 1d6 damage to find that crit potential) - so that is pretty good; depending on your POV it could be as good as or better than 1d10/19-20; the average damage for a non-critical hit is not much less, but having crits more likely to come up is great, given that crits multiply all your bonuses too.
Can't be bothered to do the math, but it would be interesting to see which one did more average damage over 100 attack rolls.
The 'deadly condition' ... I don't know, I guess it kind of fits, I can't see it being that useful in the average game.

Per my calculations, the expanded threat range doesn't overcome the greater base damage, but they are pretty close. The critical focus feat tree would make the katana more attractive, but head-to-head by the numbers, it appears that the bastard sword wins out. Slightly.
I have a spreadsheet that I use to compare different aspects of a weapon attack - with power attack vs without, with improved critical vs without - using that to compare these two weapons, they appear to be within 30 points of damage after 100 rolls.
That said, I suspect there's a glitch in my spreadsheet, so I need to revisit it to see if there's a formula wrong somewhere. My attempt at basic probability calculations for the two swords seems to lend toward the bastard sword's better damage. Again, slightly.

Ragadolf |

Heh. WEll I suppose it's pretty common knowledge (now) that the Katana was light years ahead of the other swords of the time in technology. (rolled layers of steel vs forged/hardened steel)
But when your raised on King Arthur, all of a sudden the sight of an exotic Katana on the late-night movie just looks so much cooler,...
Or was that just me?!
:)

Hey guys,
Apologies for my unexpected absence over the past few days. Looks like you guys heard my news, thanks for the positive thoughts. Times are going to be tough for a bit – my wife has just started working for three days a week after coming off 18 months maternity leave, so we fortunately have some income, but we pretty much burnt through our savings over the past 18 months so … hopefully I will find something soon. My industry is starting to be pretty badly affected by the financial uncertainty in Europe and elsewhere, but I’m sure something will come up. Circumstances may keep me away from Paizo more than normal though – not sure yet. Apologies in advance for any upcoming delays or slow downs. Please act for my character where required, or forgive slow GM updates as the case may be.
Anyway, this post is not meant to air my misery or garner sympathy, it is to express wonderment and heartfelt thanks to this fantastic community. Some far too generous person or persons who chose to stay anonymous have sent me a likewise far too generous gift certificate to help me keep up my AP subscription during this time. I can’t know for certain, but I suspect the person (or persons) is either a FAWTLy and / or in one of my pbp games. If you were behind this, thankyou so much, it is truly fantastic of you.
Cheers,
Luke

So, if you have a few minutes to spare, you might want to feast your eyes on this truly, um... remarkable collection of fantasy stories.
While this sort of thing (it has a very McSweeney's/The Baffler-type feel to it) can be a bit too smug and clever for its own good, these guys got it mostly right. Good dumb fun.

Hey everyone, quick heads up that my travels have taken me to a part of NZ with very very spotty cell phone and internet provision. I've just driven 60 kilometers to find a town where I can get a signal. We're staying long enough to have a coffee and answer some urgent emails, then it's back to the dark ages.
I should be back in a couple of days time - or heck maybe the lodge we stay in tonight will have wifi - but basically expect nothing from me for a day or two.

That was a brave move by Ozzy - 1980s Accept could wipe the floor with him, after forcing him to give them his lunch money. Jeez, did anyone put together a better series of albums than Breaker/Restless and wild/Balls to the wall/Metal heart/Russian roulette during that decade? The only ones that are even close are Judas Priest, and that's purely on the strength of British steel and Painkiller, the two most metal albums ever made.
Of course, after Udo left, Accept turned to utter, total crap, not to mention shooting the ugliest album cover ever. Which is why the new guy is such a pleasant surprise.
