Well he's 81 with bad health problems that will probably happen soon enough.

Liberty's Edge

Raul's kinda gettin' up there too.

In the big picture, how much of a change will this mean for Cuba? Will the brother keep the government running in the same vein? or is there a chance for positive diplomatic relations to begin between Cuba and the United States?

Is George W. Bush resigning too ?

Nope. He has a T-E-R-M L-I-M-I-T. Then, we elect somebody that's not necessarily his brother.

No. He has a term limit. Then, we elect somebody else, that isn't necessarily his little brother.

I agree. I expected him to be in a rest home, running Cuba, Howard Hughes style, from a kingsize bed in front of a bank of televisions.

Okay, I get it. You don't like George Bush.

Buh-bye.

There are talks of free elections, time will tell. We have “a lot” of Cuban ex-pats in the US. I bet they are really looking forward to a warming of relations, and the current administration could really use some face saving gestures.

Liberty's Edge

The whole thing really doesn't faze me much, aside from wondering what would have happened had Che not been killed. I mean, I was somewhere between the ages of four and six when the Cold War ended, so in my mind, Castro has always been just some crazy old guy with weird ideas.

Anyway, I do hope that Cuba does what's best for Cuba, and not what's best for Cuba's leaders.

More Cubans would have been murdered.

I thought that was a Hilary reference...

My personal hope is that we elect Hilary, then Jeb Bush, then Chelsea, then some other Bush, then some other Clinton, then maybe the two royal families could each have a child and those children would fall in love and the families would get all hostile and there could be some crazy tragedy/romance thing. But it would all end with Texas, California and New York nuking each other. That would be awesome...

(I've always had a soft spot for Castro. He looks like someone's nutty grandpa. If you can overlook that whole nutso murderer thing, I bet he's not a bad guy.)

Depends on your definition of "work," aside from force X distance.

Not all dictators were put in power by CIA. Some, and worse than Castro, but not all. Which probably explains why USA and Castro didn't like each other from the start.

Cubans have to decide by themselves what to do with their country, democratically (which is really far away from what the USA want for Cuba).

Meanwhile, I'll keep demanding my right to vote on the USA elections, since every decision made by your government affects me.

The spanish election system lacks from some democratic requirements, as does the USA election system too. So start criticizing and fixing your own "democracy" at least as much as you try to "fix" others'. Like Cuba, for example.

Actually "The Jade" stringtheory invalidates religion and evolution...so it aint your genetic code that is doing it to you...its the need to validate a given reality through change in possibility.

Just think...communist cuba might have wound up like the charnal slaughterhouse Hatii if Doctor Che had not been assassinated. But then again perhaps it would have been a better healthier cuba.

Siren Sounds.
"HUMMMMHUUUUM!"
"Daily Exercise Hour begins now!" THe voice on the loud speakers echoed out across Havana.
"And now a special treat...Jane Fonda's Exercise Hour".

AND PS You need to demand your right to vote on USA elections because you lost the right to directly and regularly approve every act of Government, Law, and Constitution.

Charming.

Guess what... my post was not a generalism posed by some dick who thinks "all dictators were put in power by CIA" or I would have said so. It was actually a serious question. Years ago I heard an argument that there was CIA money behind him and was fishing to see if anyone else has heard of this. Of course I know the US backed Batista but a lot of stuff goes on that we don't know about, doesn't it.

As far as America's 'crusade' against Cuba (crusade as in indicting Canadian companies that do business there), my understanding is that the USA and Castro didn't like each other because he threw Americans out and nationalized their properties. Added to this the fact that having a communist regime so close to America amounts to a chink in America's strategic defenses.

Ok, no, haven't heard of CIA involvement on Castro's rise to power...and the dictators supported by CIA were usually the ones who overthrew the governments which went for nationalization, so that would go against the common logic.

I just don't see Cuba as being a "big fish" in our foreign policy any more--most nuclear superpowers have the ability to launch an attack w/o needing Cuba as a staging point (as was threatened during the Cuban Missle Crisis). Of course I wish Cuba's citizens well, but even if democracy comes it in no way guarantees an improved lifestyle for the average citizen--democracy can put idiots into power just as easily as a military coup. Money, popularity or power--these three things usually propel men and women into positions of leasdership--but none of these factors guarantee wise or compassionate governance.

You mean killing doctors is some sort of fountain of youth?! YES! I've already buried two urologists this year! (I told them both never to approach the beast from its right side or they might startle it and get bit but they didn't listen.)

I know people who don't believe they'll age until they start believing they'll age. It's always sad to watch when reality comes a knockin'. :\

** spoiler omitted **

I've always kind of been a "hey, you kids... get offa my lawn" kind of guy at heart... but then one day ten years ago I saw these tresspassing kids were having a battle royale squirt gun fight. I drove to the store and bought the two biggest water cannons I could find. I charged the kids with these crop waterers and unleashed Lake Huron on them. Their parents showed up and noticed that their kids were entirely soaked through, cloth to skin, but the kids were so giggly and pleased about their waterlogging that they were the only ones to garner a disapproving parental headshake.

So I guess my point is don't just tell kids to get off your lawn... say it with high powered weaponry.

No such right exists, in the U. S. Constitution.

No such right exists by universal fiat either.

Soooo... Should I or should I not replace the LAW missile launchers mounted in my yard with:

a.) Super Soakers,
b.) Tasers, or
c.) Tactical nukes?

He's right. Which is why I don't vote. That, and I hate choosing the lesser of two evils. F*$%, I hate politics.

And, I hate talking about politics. Let's stop.

And Bees.

And dogs with beehives inside of them so that they shoot bees out of their mouth when they bark.

I'd recommend digging holes and covering them with sod, so kids fall leg down into the pit. I fill the pit with Ben Gay, that way when the tingling starts they think they've been poisoned. Run home to your mommy! Tell 'em the jellyfish man got you! That's right!
