I chose Cato Novus for a few reasons.
My actual name is Chris Caton.
Tracing ancestory, I'm related to the Romans Marcus Portius Cato the Elder, and Marcus Portius Cato of Utica(or the Younger), who were more simply known as Cato Major(the Elder) and Cato Minor(the Younger). Cato Novus in this case merely Cato the Newer. Although, to be completely honest, after roughly two thousand years, there's probably quite a few of us who are related to those old Romans.
Cato itself is Latin, translating to "sagacity", meaning "practical wisdom" or "common sense". In this case, Cato Novus translates as "The New Practical Wisdom". Personally, I prefer to use the words "practical wisdom" to "common sense", because that highly valued trait is nowhere near common enough, at least in my opinion.
Lastly, its part of my admittedly bad and punny sense of humor(if it wasn't for bad jokes, I wouldn't make any at all), as I'm playing a turn of phrase on my ancestor's names.
So, there you have it: My screen name honors my ancestors, strokes my ego, and tells a really bad joke, all at the same time. I MULTI-TASK!
Rune was obviously influenced by Pathfinder. Scryber because I like to draw (it makes sense to me).
I picked my avatar because it looks like me (except my ears aren't quite so pointy).
I ran a wizard in a d&d campaign where I chose this name figuring it couldn't get any worse, so far so good.
Sometimes I wonder if I could have done better but then again I don't want to jinx 4th edition any further...

My nick is cribbed from "E.T.", uttered during a scene in which Elliot argues with a kid after getting off the school bus. I have used it extensively because I have a lot of Larry David moments, and Lord Finesse I ain't.
The avatar is just appropriate for so many reasons. It resembles me, I am a goat-boy Capricorn and the raised eyebrow is my signature expression. Now if only the Satyr was giving a pair of thumbs ups.
I played Fabian in Twelfth Night; several of us used the names of the characters we played as nicknames on the theatre company message board, and these all got shortened - Fabian - fabes, Aguecheek - Aguers, Tooby Belch - Tobes.

I used to RP on the Yahoo! boards back in the late 90s, and my g/f (now wife) started off with dark_eyed_ranger as a username. To 'join in', I got to be blue_eyed_paladin. After all, I get to be the moral compass of the group, I have blue eyes, and it's just... stuck.
So now I use it for everything... hotmail, bank accounts, Paizo... everything. The odd looks you get... hmm.

My all time favorite PC so far was a drow bard named Elanel (played before the paizo drow bard, mind you!). Renowned for giving DMs migranes and proving that chaotic neutral doesn't mean crazy, just unpredictable.
Ah, his many deeds: dressing a corrupt nobleman up as a burgler and setting his own dogs on him, firing the noble's staff and giving them extravagant "severance" packages on the way out, then setting the mansion on fire, stealing the nobleman's toy poodle, and leaving town, never to return.
And that was just 3rd level.
So yeah, the Black Bard.
Murkmoldiev The Ruddy is a skinny Duergar with long legs and a pot belly he has a shockingly red face that looks like a mutated raddish. His hair pokes out in freaky tufts at the sides of his head making him look like some kind of freaky reverse clown. He wears stained and patched brilliant scarlet longjohns, his dark crimson ceremonial cloak billows behind him. He has a shadow jerkin on.
Personality: A twisted covetous pervert whos’ evil is only surpassed by his greed. He got this far through cunning and tactful use of his dark power. He will flee a battle as soon as it he thinks he cannot win, but his orders are to destroy the party and he will endeavor to do so.
History: His past is unspeakable.

I'll bite: the name originates from a character in a series of stories i was writing (wrote). This was years ago. I've been using it as my primary identity online for quite some time now (10 years almost). The actual spelling of the characters name is Lo'Jakz, but i'd gotten used to using the lower case without the apostrophe. There was a reason (and it still exists in the context of the story) why there is an apostrophe in the name.
Mine comes from Tourin, the anti-hero of Tolkiens Silmarilion.
I truly loved that guy!!! It also means the Black Sword.
Rift is the last name of my first ever RP character. I had to think of an alter-ego for Games Workshop's worldwide 13th Black Crusade and I wanted something that sounded different. I have no clue how I ended up with Vespasius but the last name Rift I picked because its so uncommon as a nickname, plus I wanted my Astarte to be different. These days I prefer Rift, but I'm also known as Vesp. Rift is such a troublesome nickname to google on, its worth the trouble I have with it myself.
In CS:Source though I'm known as LC, 'the vegetable terror'. Go figure.

I think the first post was written in character or something, habit which I abandoned quickly but stuck with the name (even if my profile represents the character, not me as a player). Seldriss is the name of one of my character in D&D, on Eberron.

My main forum name stems from a middle school game we made up (an RPG and we didn't even realize it) called "New Zekeland" where we each played the part of a warlord who had to run his sector while navigating problems like "Elvis Clone Rampage" or "Phil Loose with a Gun", trading with rival sectors, and entertaining phone calls from world leaders like Ramses, Ghandi, or Hitler. My pseudonym was Nathan Chance (after a short stint as Lord Dimwit Flathead) and it just stuck. As a matter of fact, my fiance and I have decided that our first son will be named Nathan. I also enjoy the slight play on "No Chance" with the forum name. My other, more widely used forum name, Warforged Goblin, came from the mental image of a little mechanical ankle-biter that caused all sorts of problems. "Mecha-Goblin" was a bit too cheezy, so my love of the Eberron setting took over and it just stuck. Although, I may have to change it to "Golarion Goblin" depending on what happens after the 4E switch.
Deathedge was the name of a really cool supervillain assassin/mercenary in a Mutants and Masterminds campaign we were playing, and he happened to be the arch-nemesis of my character. The guy had basically zero superpowers (he was just AWESOME with all types of bladed and throwing weapons) but he still proved to be a major headache for Nighthand (my vigilante) whenever he showed up.
It reflects my primary approach to RPGs (cerebral, tactical, and technical) and references a key activity in Diamond Lake at the start of AoWAP.

Is it my imagination or was the original Zork The Best Game Ever!!!. I could almost complete the whole game from go-to-whoh from memory with a bare minimum of turns. Of course it took alot of playing to get that way, not to mention the map/hint pack (although I didn't use very many hints).
Zork II and Zork III were both pretty good. (I had all 3 on my Commodore 64).My uncle had an Amiga and I used to play Beyond Zork and Zork Zero whenever we visited. They were both pretty good too, although because he lived 6 hours away it was only 2 or 3 times a year that we visited.
I have Return to Zork, Zork Nemesis and Zork Grand Inquisitor but have only played through about half of each. To my mind they were not quite the same Zork to me as the old text based ones, even though they were decent enough games in their own right.
OK, sorry for the Threadjack, but it's nice to see someone else who appreciates Zork like I do, and maybe has a little place hidden away in their heart which will always fondly remember typing away for hours instead of clicking away for hours as these younguns do nowadays ;)
Every now and then I get the urge to pull out my old C64 just so I can play Zork, but the workload in doing so gets the better of me.

Hmm, I used this name since I first got on the net in 1997.
I used it ever since and it somehow developed a life of its own...:)
I'm no drunkard and my sn isn't supposed to promote drinking in any way.
I just liked the sound of the word back then (and still do) and I didn't had time to come up with something more creative.
It was in an internet café and they charged a small fortune for every 15 minutes on the net.

Nothing fancy here. I use this name on every message board. It's the name of my first homebrew game world that I created back in 1984.
Back when using the internet primarily meant university e-mail and gopher and archie, this girl I liked called me that "tall blonde ugly guy", which she shortened to "tbug". I've used it as an on-line nick ever since.
We've been married nearly twenty years. :)
After years of signing on all sorts of messageboards with different screen names, I came late to the idea of a single, unified handle. I chose "plungingforward" because it seemed like a good idea at the time, although as far as messageboards I think I'm only using it here and Ultimate Central (comics forum), as I don't join boards often. Some time later I got confused as to which e-mail address I was using for Paizo (I have several), so I created a second account (hence the 2). Having since remembered which e-mail I was using, I now switch back and forth.

Well primemover is a euphamism for god, a leader, or any power source that drives a system. 003 is the number on a d% that I use as the Miracle Roll in my 2e games... it was kinda like an action point before there were action points. If you tried something just incredibly brave, stupid, or just plain outright crazy I gave you a miracle roll. Surprisingly it was achieved quite a few times! It's also my representation of the Rule-of-Three from PS.
So smoosh them together and viola!

Actually, my real name has a pretty funny origin. I was named after a friend of the family's ex-wife (yup, she was an ex-wife at the time), just because my mom liked the way the name sounded.
I've only once met another person named Cintra. I was in a Woolworths in my college town after summer break, and I said to a friend of mine, "Hey, look, they still have these same lollipops on sale."
A woman's voice right behind me said, "Cintra, get your hand out of those lollipops!"
I turned around, startled, to see that she was addressing a little girl, maybe three years old, with straight dark hair (like mine, and cut much as mine had been at a similar age). I asked if the little girl was really named Cintra, and she was, so I introduced myself to the little girl ("My name's Cintra, too"), but she just stared at me.
My first Character, nearly 17 years ago was a Drow Elf Wizard (before every man and his dog had one in the wake of Drizzt). Unlike Drizzt I didn't chicken out and make him good. He was entirely selfish and obsessed with power. In fact he was probably more influenced by Raistlin than anything Forgotten Realms.
Anyway, when I was looking for a name I was reading Dragonspell by Katheryn Kerr. In the novel the Elves are called the Elcian Lacar. So that became his name. I haven't played Elcian for about 14 years but I still think of him off causing mayhem in the Realms.

The bad experiences were many years ago, and I was a lot younger to boot. So I know the dirrerence now, don't look so much like a victim, and can take care of myself when the bad people do show up. Gamer don't scare me anymore. Not much of anyone scares me anymore.
But one of the things I like about gaming is that MOST people seem good at heart, even when some of them aren't compatable personalities. That's particular true on these boards, which seem to have a higher ratio of compatable, nice peopel I can converese with.
Saern is the name of my homebrew world. When I signed up here, I really couldn't think of a name to use, but most other people seemed to be using something other than their real name (although that's changed and there are quite a few now, as this very thread demonstrates). Anyway, I've been tinkering on this world since the 7th grade, running games in it since the 10th (I'm now a sophomore in college) and it means a lot to me. So, I thought it would be a good choice.
The dragon picture was chosen because I thought it was cool. To be honest, I now wish I'd chosen a picture of a wizard. I love mages. And, the dragon is much angrier and, well, more fiery than I am in reality. But, I can't bring myself to change it now. I recognize a lot of people here by their avatars and don't like it when they change, so I figure I shouldn't do it, either. Plus, I don't want to descend the dark path James Keegan has been going down for some time now (STOP IT, James!).

Funny enough, my Paizo name is my name ... that was pretty easy. The name I usually is AndrewD2 and that comes from my friends dad back when I was in High School. My friend and I are big Star Wars nuts and one day his dad walked into church, saw me and said "Hey it's AndrewD2 of the Rebellion" and it's stuck ever since.
Me: "The long answer?"
You: "Yes please, Jade, long answers only!"
Me: "Well, alright. You've convinced me. You know how I usually like to keep things concise."
Li'l me wrote a short song called The Jade back in '92. Not unlike Ziggy Stardust it was another rock and roll messiah song, except my returning messiah just studied people. He refused to act or interact and invested himself in pretending to not be able to feel. The Jade is a jaded savior, too unimpressed to help.
In '96 I stepped online for the first time. Prodigy was having a celebrity chat with Anthrax that night. I'd jammed with them once when I was 17 and so the name caught my eye and I went into the chat with the name "angry cow," my very first handle. I berated them for insensitively using a bovine STD as a band name and spat something along the lines of, "How would you like it if I named my band testicular cancer?!"
That handle burnt up its usefullness that one night. The next day I was reminded of the iconic character from my song and adopted the name. It's stuck since, despite all the gender confusion it's caused.
Its my name.
