The Splintered Isles
"Beware the divine wrath"

This is my first pbp as a DM but I've been playing in other games for a while. However I have played and run games for a bit longer.

First and foremost I am looking for two things from any players, enthusiasm and decent roleplaying. Enthusiasm is vital because the best games I play in have people posting regularly. That means posting every day during the week (not so much over the weekends).

Secondly I have one spot prebooked (by my first DM - Utak) and another pencilled for a beginner (TheOcho) however that's all I am interested in for now. In about a weeks time I shall open up the game for three others.

Please do not apply here just yet.

Between now and then I'll set up a thread in the Play by Post Discussion titled along the lines of "The Splintered Isles". This will contain all the background info players need. Read it all and then decide if you want to play in my style of game.

Cheers

The Exchange

OK, now to find out if anyone is interested?

The background information is all done, character generation sorted, all I need now are some more players!

I'm looking for three more willing victims, and can't wait to have a crack at DM'ing some of you.

Anyone is welcome to join.

If it looks like there's enough interest I may be persuaded to add another spot.

One thing just to show that you are keen, please could you include what sorts of PC's you'd imagine playing in the Splintered isles.

Cheers

Hey French Wolf,

You know I'm in. I already have a Half-Orc Barbarian planned out. Currenly the descripion is all in my head, but now that I have the character generation guidelines, I will hop to a readable format.

Are we starting on the Island of Vinggor? If so, he will be living as a jungle barbarian up to the start of the game, unless of course, this would not fit. The character description will explain how he ended up there.

Cheers, for now.

Utak

The Exchange

Yes everyone is starting on the Island of Vinggor in the village of Musaal.

Please use the alias profiles to build your half-orc.

Yrar spoiler

Spoiler:
I see the jungle elves as a wild bunch. With in racial issues so your half-orc could be part of the "tribe" so to speak. Along with any others that fit your idea. Somehow he needs to have come from the Norgard raider stock. I'll leave that little gem up to you.

Cheers

Your setting is extremely interesting and I would love to play in it, if you'll have me. I was thinking about a few different possible characters, such as a dwarven cleric (of Moradin) from Vanneal or a gnomish rogue from the isle of Vinggor (possible a Maqah or member of the Faradin - or both if they truly are the same).

Hey, I am also interested in your game.

The Two Classes I was interested in was a Avenging Druid or a Savage Bard, most likely Human or Half Human. If someone has a preference or another idea for me i would love to hear it.

Great stuff Evil Genius. Either is good. We can work out the details once everyone has settled on a class.

Same comments as for Evil Genius. I cannot wait to see your ideas on fitting these into the setting.

Hmm, ok. Well I have been thinking about this pretty hard. Looking at the wizard or sorcerer class scares me a little bit. It is probably easier to play one than the books make it seem. A cleric does sound appealing though. I did look up the Favored Soul you mentioned and they do sound very cool. So far no one has said anything about playing a healer so I will volunteer my services for that. As long as it is fine with everyone else I will try my hand at the favored soul class. Without the book in front of me there should be no restrictions on race right?

A Gnome Favored Soul sound ok? For background I was thinking about a Gnome living on his family's ship which was attacked by an overwhelming amount of pirates. The crew was either murdered or thrown overboard, my PC being one of the survivors. The ship was taken and turned into a pirate vessel. My PC washed up on shore with no trace of his family/friends. Knowing a healer is no match for pirates he sets out to recruit/join others to bring justice down on them and to retrieve the family ship.

BTW, this is the Favored Soul info I was looking at:

Favored Soul

The Exchange

Good choice for you, the favored soul. Good choice for the party as well. The key is going to be choosing your spells as it says in the article.

Plus even if Evil Genius chooses to play a dwarf cleric and Logos goes with the druid/bard then the extra healing will come in handy. You'll all be able to patch up the barbarian.

The background stuff is ideal.

What do the rest of you think?

1) half-orc barbarian
2) gnome favoured soul
3) dwarf cleric or gnome rogue
4) human/half-human avenging druid or savage bard
5) plus another

Cheers

Sounds good. Looks like if we get someone with arcane abilites, we should be good.

Hey Ocho, if you would like, my background might fit nicely and we may be able to overlap our meeting before the game begins. How would you feel about that?

Cheers,

Utak

The Exchange

I've started to bang the drum on the boards for another player. Perhaps the rest of you could do the same?

Time of year and the sheer number of games that recently started are against us, I know.

We can easily start as a four and add players after so it's no great issue.

I am starting to work on the village and it's NPCs. The first adventure is almost there as well.

Cheers

Sounds pretty good. My profile has been updated with that possibly happening. Everything in the profile is just notes so far. It is starting to sound pretty good, to me at least. :)

Do you still have an open spot? I'd love in if you do... :)

Well, here's my gnome rogue. He's definitely one of the Maqah gnomes, perhaps even a member of the Faradin. As his father was a great sea merchant, he's spent a lot of time on ships (and thus has ranks in Profession (sailor), Swim, and Use Rope). Little does his father know, Shulim spends most of his days now as a petty thief.

The Exchange

Sully - you're in.

Please read the Play by Post discussion thread titled "The Splintered Isles Table Chat" (warning: it's not short!) and come up with a fitting character that you like.

From the posts above you should have an idea of what the others want to play too.

If you play a wizard or sorcerer, for instance, I think everyone would be happy but it's what you feel comfortable with in the end.

Cheers and welcome aboard.

Shulim looks good.

Shulim Spoiler

Spoiler:
Treat the Faradin as a mafia-like organisation, centred in Bidikah that hires thieves for various minor tasks. A strict hierarchy with ranks and titles and bloodlines. Shulim will be on the outside, a true petty criminal, looking to make a name for himself. He could be affiliated to the Faradin, with a suitable mentor or handler that often provides him with work.
Bheddah, by the way, can be a gnome family ship or a one horse village that Shulim was borne in.
He will have only recently arrived in Musaal and will be pretty much on his own. That should give him some freedom. I'll provide a reason for him being there nearer the start of the game.

Just wanted to ask

if I'm half sea elf, is it mechanically identical to half elf ( I checked the srd and no mention of it etc)

if it is, can i take/make a racial feat to allow waterbreathing or breath holding ability.

I think I'm gonna end up playing a Half Sea Elf Druidic Avenger, probably NG with a mean streak. Will stat up hopefully later today. ( I was wavering on who to worship moon or sun? hmmm probably moon)

Excellent! I'll read and post my ideas a little later tonight...I have to work for a few hours yet.

Glad to be on board!

The Exchange

Half-sea elves aren't in the SRD. They are mechanically the same as ordinary half-elves.

You get the extraordinary ability Amphibious which means you can breathe on land and in water. But your swim speed is that of a land dweller.

This could be a big advantage and I have been trying to come up with a penalty to balance it. I've read that the standard penalty is a +1 LA but that seems a bit steep. You may have hit on the solution. The choice is yours, either you start at -750 XP or you use up your first feat to be amphibious.

What's your background to becoming an avenger? Put your response in a spoiler if you don't want the others to know.

Lastly I'd rather you didn't chose Tellora as your deity, she is evil.

possible choices are;
1) Deep Sashelas - the elven god of the sea
2) Krakis - the Seamaster
3) One of your own devising (but not evil).

Cheers

The Exchange

Looking at the Avenger class and its rage ability, perhaps Krakis would make a decent god. He is neutral and the aspect of weather includes storms and the like.

What do you think?

Cheers

Okay I misunderstood about the whole moon sun thing, I thought it was more antagonistic dualism rather than deontological (ie one is actually good and the other evil).

and I think I'll just use the standard half elf as I don't want to make anything crazy or use a level adjustment or negative xps. I'll just take endurance as my bonus feat(giving +4 to that whole hold your breath thing) and have a decent con should be enough.

stats coming soon

Logos

As far as religion I'll worship Deep Sashelas and his Wife Trishina ( I kind of enjoy that thought of turning into an otter more than a dolphin but where as i'm a druid and not a cleric the goods are just their as foci for my interaction with nature right?)

Just reread the race descriptions, I don't think that it would make sense for a half sea elf not to breath underwater, so I'll spend a feat on it (the amphibious subtype) unless you want me to start @ -750xp your choice.

The Exchange

Logos - my guess is that you know your stuff. I've never heard of Trishina, but she sounds great. Maybe you could look at replacing her otter with something more in keeping with the subtropical setting?

Take the "amphibious" feat, it will simplify things.

Plus I offered you 4d6 seven times, so here's your extra one, if you want, a 13, sorry for not rolling better.

Kewl , I'll take the tropical bit better, maybe I'll start calling deep seshells the father of all deep ones, and take to squid form eventrually.

other than that looks good!

and trishna was listed as the goddess of dolphins wife of deep sassells, I'm not a big fan of dolphins but I'll find something I'm sure.

Hey French Wolf,

I really tried to make some time today to get Yrar started, but the week before X-Mas we always get hammered with new patients coming in trying to get clean for the holidays. It should slow down soon, and I will make an honest attempt to get some info down tomorrow. My sincere apologies.

Cheers,

Utak

man, I spent almost an hour working on my character. Saving the post after I had it the way I wanted it and it just dumped me back to the main page. The whole time out thing on the boards sucks. I will try and get it all done tomorrow at work.

/cries himself to sleep

I'm still in, I just had a crisis...make that several crises...come up at work tonight. I'll have a full character as well as backstory up quickly, hopefully tomorrow as I'm going to try and leave work early. Thanks for the patience, and I do apologize.

The Exchange

Gentlemen - there is no rush for this. We have the players now and I sure you guys will produce the goods when you can.

It's Christmas remember so things are bound to be a bit patchy. I know that goes against what I said about posting daily but I am aiming for the game to start beginning of January.

As for losing work, it happens, alot. I try to do everything in word and then copy across (advice from Mike McArtor) but I know that means reformatting for bold and spoilers.

Not so keen on dolphins myself.

Is there still room here?

If it is an island campaign, I'd want to make a Darfellan ranger or ranger/cleric. However, if Iskandria is more present..mabye a Hadozze rogue or scout.

The Exchange

Mactaka I'll leave it up to you. Read the Splintered isles Table Chat on the pbp discussion thread and decide. It has a great deal of info on the Isles.

You'll notice that there are no PC Stormwrack races involved. The nearest thing is a half sea elf.

We have five players now but I shall hold a slot for you until you give me a yea or nay.

That's fine.

You didn't really misunderstand the two gods. I deliberately made Tellora a bit ambiguous. That's simply because her faith may become a major thorn in the party, however you've called my bluff.

Straight half-elf it is.

Cheers

The Exchange

OK, there is one slot open for either Mactaka or Tio in that order, but both may decide against.

As it stands we have five players anyway.

Utak - Yrar Kynlas - orcblood barbarian (with a big hammer)
Logos - ? - half-elf druid avenger
TheOcho - Fudrick Boddymill - gnome favoured soul of Hettama
Evil Genius - Shulim al Bheddah - gnome rogue
Sully - arcanist

Taking into account Christmas and the New Year I'd like to start the adventures by 6 January.

Just so you guys know I am on GMT time and because I'm in and out at my home alot of the time I tend to post very regularly. Plus I am on holiday for the next two weeks and will hopefully have ready access to a family PC. If there's any problem I'll let you all know and hopefully you can do the same.

We can now transfer our character generation discussions over to the Table Chat thread. Ta.

Spoiler:
Look out for a small Christmas present on Christmas Day.

I think I have my character info complete now. So far no one else is really able to do any healing so I put spells geared to buffing the group and healing. Please feel free to look over everything and if I missed something don't hesitate to let me know. All this number crunching can be tough on a new guy.

I've looked over it and its fine. Better than fine, in fact.

Could you do me a favour and just use the other thread from now on?

To all those players of games that have just folded (myself included).

I am DMing a Sinbad style arabian voyage adventure called the Splintered Isles. It started on Sunday and out of the five original players two seemed to have stopped posting (probably due to those real life issues).

We could do with one, two or possibly three more adventurers to complement the three good players we have.

They are playing a barbarian, a favoured soul and a druid avenger (UA).

There's plenty of information about the Splintered Isles on the discussion thread so if your interested have a read and let us know.

Cheers

Hello,
I was poking around and found your thread. I''m in a couple of PbP's and having a great time. I believe, (crosses fingers) that I can make the commitment to one more.

(IF you'll have me, of course!)

The sinbad style adventure sounds fun to me. ( I LOVE the old Sinbad/Harryhaussen movies!)I LUV arcanists, but am also fond the smart-aleck swashbuckler types. I will find and read your background thread and post a character idea.

Um,... do you wish me to report here, or to your discussion thread?

Thank you!

I'm back...and I apologize. I had a death in the family which pulled me away from the boards for a while. I should be able to post regularly from here on out. If I have been replaced, I fully understand, but I'm still interested if I'm needed.

Ragadolf make a character. You are just the sort I hoped would be interested. I read some of your smart-aleck stuff today (can't remember his name) but it involved a broomstick - weird but funny. Choose whatever you want and I'd like to tie your character in with Sully's when you are both ready.

He is probably playing a ranger.

You have not been replaced and under the circumstances I hope drawing up your ranger and playing with the others may help take your mind off real life.

Chat with Ragadolf and the rest and perhaps you can come up with a way you and his PC are together?

Anyway glad you are on board.

One point I'd like to reiterate to Sully and Ragadolf is to read the discussion thread for info on the Splintered Isles. Read it thoroughly and you should be able to come up with a great character.

Meanwhile the game will continue and I'll insert you both together at a suitable point.

Excellent! Thanks for being so understanding. Working on character now and should have an appropriate backstory very very soon.

@Sully~ My condolences. And my prayers to you and your family. I am glad to see you back.

@ The French Wolf~ Thank you. You are very kind. (Both for letting me in, and the nice comments!) I have skimmed over everything quickly and have a couple of ideas. UNfortunately I have already devoted too much of my work day to the PC already today. (I DO have to get some work done at some point!) But I will review in more details tonight and start work on this asap. When I have a concept picked I will chat with Sully and see if we can get together.

Also, Ragadolf, I've kind of moved our chat over to the thread in PbP discussion. See you there!

Sinbad, pirates, jungles, archeaology digs in ruins, sorcerers and there will be sea adventures.

Who wants in?

Hi everyone, now that I have four willing players, the game is looking good. But I'd like at least one more, possibly two.

The players so far are;

Fudrick, the gnome favoured soul of a Sun God
Roman, the half sea elf druid avenger
Yrar-Kynlas, the half-orc barbarian
Fazaam, the generic spellcaster with a monkey familiar.

I am currently running an NPC rogue gnome but I'd like that to become another player just to round things out (you don't have to be a rogue).

We have had a couple of players say yes at this point then drop out without a word, so let's have a good guy or gal this time.

If you are interested sign up here. For any more information look at the Splintered Isles Table Chat in the PBP Discussion Thread.

Ooh, ooh, pick me!

I'm dying to play a rocking skill-user.

Okay, you have:

Pirates? Check.

Sea-faring adventures? Check.

Indiana Jones-esque digsites? Check.

Count me in.

Where can I find info on levels/permitted materials? The discussion thread?

Cheers.

The Exchange

PsionicFox - You are in so long as you can reassure me that you'll be able to post regularly. That may sound harsh, its not meant to be, but I've had two players mess me about since the game started six weeks ago.
Everyone is first level on about 250xp so you would be pretty much in at the beginning.

How often do you think you could post? I recognise your name so my guess is that you are on the boards often but its best to check.

Please have a look at the discussion thread, there is tons of information, including details of rolling up a character. Most of the info you need is at the beginning of the thread.

The game thread itself tends to be busy during the week and not so much at the weekend.

Thanks for the quick response.

Cheers

If this all sounds a bit gruff, sorry, my football team is being beaten in the FA Cup by a two bit penny ante basic team of part-timers!

Shadow Lodge

Hey, no worries. I can post pretty much every day, on an average week, I can post anywhere between 4-7 times a week, depending on the post length. I occasionally have a day or two when I don't get the opportunity to post, but that's about it.

What books are allowed? I'll get to character-building ASAP.
