Tentacular limbs

Rules Discussion

Hello, I have some questions about the tentacular limbs spell.

Can the sorcerer from the aberrant bloodline only to obtain this spell ?

For the effect :
first action to cast the spell : reach 10 feet
2nd action : reach 20 feet

heightened (+2) : 2nd action : reach 30 feet

heightened (+4) : 2nd action : reach 40 feet
...

heightened (+9) : 2nd action : reach 60 feet

Is it right ?

Is it possible to grapple with this spell ?

Thanks for your future answer.

The additional reach is only for casting touch spells : "During the duration, whenever you Cast a Spell, you can add an additional action to that spell's casting to temporarily extend your reach to 20 feet to deliver that spell." Reach for unarmed strikes is only ever extended to 10 feet. I think I'd allow grappling, but only with 10 foot reach.

Yes tentacular limbs is exclusive to the aberrant sorcerer, currently.

Your reach values look correct, but remember that the extended reach only applies to touch spells.

Yes, you could grapple within your unarmed reach, but that is limited to the 10 foot reach base benefit.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

So it works like this:
- It doesn't actually extend reach for grappling. It just extends reach for touch spells and unarmed strikes. A grapple is an attack, but not a strike. It's possible that you might be able to get a GM to permit grapples anyway, but it's not in the rules.

- It costs one action to cast, and lasts for one minute. During that minute, your reach for all unarmed strikes and touch spells is increased to 10 feet. This is an "increase to 10" and not an "add 5". There's a lot of other sources of reach that it won't stack with.

- While Tentacular Limbs is in effect, if you cast a touch spell, you may add another action on the casting time of that spell (often takign it from a 2-action spell to a 3-action spell) to increase the reach further for that spell only. If you want to boost range on two different spells, you're going to have to pay the extra action on both. That's the only part where heightening comes into effect, and for that you're correct. It maxes out at heightened(+8) with a reach of 60.

- It is correct that the only source for this spell is the Sorceror aberrant bloodline. There's not even any way for sorcerors of other bloodlines ot poach it with a feat. It is available to archetype sorcerors of that bloodline, though, via the Basic Bloodline Spell feat at 4.
