I do like the Kyle's art in the foreword but was not an enormous fan of the cartoony art later in the book. I have nothing against the artist but I ust don't think it helped the book. I agree that the sandpoint character art wasn't great. While I did like the art in the main section more (paticularly liked the picture of elf ranger) I still didn't think it really suits pathfinder.
I've always preferred more realistic art for D&D, your imagination is already stretched greatly by the game it is nice to have a realistic looking frame of reference. With the more cartoony look I feel like it just requires more suspension of disbelief. After all that isn't a picture of a person it is clearly a cartoon rendering of them. With the more realistic art this isn't a problem. Just my opinion, but I will be glad to have kyle do the art work for the foreword. Just would prefer that style of art to be a bit less prevelent in the rest of pathfinder which from the sound of James Jacobs it will be.

We've heard LOUD and CLEAR that a lot of our readers dislike cartoony art. We've also heard very little in defense of that art style. And guess what? When you get Pathfinder 2, you'll see the results.
...
Kyle Hunter will continue to be a part of Pathfinder as well. His monsters will be illustrating the Forewords and the preview section at the back, but at this point we won't be illustrating adventures with them. We do have him working on something pretty awesome though that I can't say much more about yet...
So: consider Pathfinder 2 to be closer to where we're aiming for Pathfinder's overall look. And Pathfinder 3 and 4 to be closer still. It'll be a constantly evolving process, though.
I like there to be cartoons in there, myself ... but as funny little asides or like the aforementioned Foreword illustration, rather than as character portraits and the like.
By all means, please include the occasional "Dave, get the barbarian in the corner another drink, quick!" type of piece.

The art in the Sandpoint article for the NPCs was not Kyle's work. That was from Jeff Laubenstein. It doesn't fit the look of Pathfinder, so we won't be using that art style in future volumes.
Does he typically do Shadowrun art? His stuff looks familiar to me and I keep thinking of Shadowrun.
Wow. I didn't realize that the only Kyle art was on the first page. Who did all the art in Burnt Offerings? I liked that art, but part of that was because I thought it was Kyle with a slightly more "serious" look. I love Kyle's interpretation of monsters. Rich Burlew's stick figure interpretations are also very good in a similar way.

I 100% agree. You guys really do a fantastic job at listening to feed back. I really appreciate it!

The only piece of art from Kyle in Pathfinder 1 is the goblin in the Foreword on page 6.
I misunderstood which pieces were his then, and I apologize for the misjudgment.
I know this was brought up in another thread but giving the artists credit in the inner margins would be a real nice touch.
Keep up the great work Eric, et al!

While I generally am happy with the promised look and feel of Pathfinder, I'd like to make a request. If ever you do a light Gamemastery module in the style of say Dungeonland, I'd like you to source its art 100% from Jim Holloway and Kyle Hunter.

I'm not a big fan of Kyle Hunter's art and, to be honest, I HATED the art in the Sandpoint NPC portraits and the drawings of characters like Ripnugget. I despised it and wish that the artist had never done any work for Pathfinder.
However, if you let something like a few illustrations by an artist you don't like keep you from buying an otherise fantastic product then you need to have a serious perespective check.

I'm happy there's no more Laubenstein in the works. No insult meant to him, but I didn't like his Shadowrun stuff and I like his Pathfinder stuff less.
I must be having a bad brain day. What is DMILF? I don't get it. Must be too old and not computer lingo savvy enough.
Edit: Wait....having an American Pie flashback. Please tell me that's not it.

I heartily agree here.
As for Kyle; I have no problem with his stuff. I'm just glad they haven't hired on BAXA to do their artwork. *shudder*

well I don't know who did the art for pathfinder 1, but I absolutely loved it. Especially the goblins. They are probably my favorite art pieces in any dnd product I've ever bought, aside from a few eberron books, which I would consider on par.
And I happened to really like the character portraits. Ultra realistic and nonstylesed, or what I refer to as "80's hair-metal fantasy art" is boring and stupid. I Like the new feel and designs that are in pathfinder. I'd love to see more of it.
Also, one malicious post from a guy who never came back to discuss it is pretty worthless.

Well, I'd like to put in a preference for not having anymore of Jeff's work in Pathfinder. Ever.
I disagree. I was totally surprised when Erik Mona (in the Pathfinder's Artwork thread) told us Jeff to be the artist for those particular pictures. And while I admit that I don't like this particular style, I also admit that I did like Jeff's artwork on the pages of Dungeon (#118 "Box of Flumphs" or #147 "The Aundairian Job" to give some examples). Something along these lines and I won't argue about it.

Well, we really have not heard back from DMILF; whatever that stands for - am not good at internet acronyms, but am curious.
Perhaps this person does not like more than just the art style; for instance; maybe this KYLE person has a political blog where he espouses stuff DMILF doesnt like; I know I dont buy Dannon yogurt and a whole lot of other items or shop at certain stores due to those manufactures or corporate politics. Stuff like this is not always obvious, really strange that DMILF did not respond back; seems to me that his/her post really just belonged in Sarn's Rant thread.
One liners dont often bring about social or political change, but may be a rally call.
Why the thread starter was so enigmatic; well, I have no idea or what this thread is about or why some people seem to get their jollies from obscure comments that only they understand - perhaps it is a silent smirk thing; who knows; need more info.
I do think it is a little harsh to jump over the artist as most of us have no idea what strictures the artist was given to render the pics; it could have been as simple as; hey draw us some blah blah; or could have been as complex as we need a layout using these colors, in this style, representing this theme, using these weapons, ect. ect.
The art is ok in my perview as I am not good at drawing that style and really appreciated the skill. It would be a big disservice to both players and upcomming artists out there to become static in the choice of art displayed in the publication.
darn; forgot to stand on my soapbox
*shrugs*
DMILF how about an update; please clarify.

Nah, Lilith's right.. it's not work safe or board appropriate.
Here's a clue...
"Divorced Mothers I'd ......."
And don't count a small word like "to" in the acronym. Now enough of that.
Anyway, I don't mind Kyle's art in the Foreword.. in the right place and in the right context it's fine, as many have already agreed.
Jeff Laubenstein on the other hand? I tried to introduce a legitimate romantic subplot with Ameiko and one my players, and around the whole table they thought she was homely and trashy because of the art, particularly the cheesy tattoos, despite my descriptive attempts to tell them otherwise. (I wish I'd never shown them the picture).
They haven't seen the elf ranger yet.. <sigh> I'll probably not show them after the last reaction.
I agree, Mr. Laubenstein is just not ready for "Prime time."

I couldn't disagree more. I adore the art of BAXA. I bought the books for the Dark Sun campaign setting based on my infatuation with his work, Brom's work, and that it supported Psionics.
I've found his work to be a great source of inspiration for my own artwork.
