Ran into some hostile PvP'ers in a 0.9, who feebly attempted to bait me into paying them protection money.
While I bemoan the loss of the industrial ship I'd had since maybe 2 or 3 months after character creation, these guys just didn't get it that many players simply do NOT want to PvP.
Hrm ... rewind a bit.
Was peacefully indy-mining, steadily munching up the huge piles of ore I need to build 8 battleships, when I noticed in my peripheral vision the flash of a ship exploding. (I was at work indy-mining afk, with the sound off.) Sure enough, my shields, armor and most of my hull hp are gone, CONCORD is fragging the snot out of 4 or 5 hostiles, and then my indy pops.
Not being a complete idiot I warped my pod to my home station, swapped into the PvE Drake and warped back out. Saw one fellow (in an interceptor) flashing red, locked and started slamming him with missiles. Didn't get him, although he was not leaving until the lights slammed into him (under benefit of a target painter) after which he promptly bugged out. (The havoc missiles he could ignore for a time - the standard missiles he could not, so he smartly warped out with what little valuable material survived my explosion.)
Since I largely use looted items for fitting my ships, and the drake was still fitted for PvE, I set about salvaging my own and thier wrecks, getting practically nothing out of it. I waited about the asteroid belt for a little while, chitchatted briefly in local about the nature of the business at hand [" CONCORD doesn't show up when you are at war "] and then docked.
Of course, at that point the chuckleheads had the nerve to convo me about paying protection money to not be KOS.
I of course disagreed with thier logic, since that indy had probably made me billions in either a direct or indirect sense over its time of service. Coupled with it being entirely fitted from ratloot, the cost to me was the small insurance fee. The cost to them was at least one battleship, a badly damaged interceptor, and at a guess several throw-away cruisers. At the best case, it was a completely break-even scenario for both sides.
Mind, he was supposedly looking for "1v1", which boils down to him in his battleship against my battlecruiser ... naaah, think I'll pass. I refitted that drake for PvP (basically, the only ship that can probably out-jam that drake is a scorpion), swapped over to the supershuttle and went about dealing with blueprints.
Given the busy table-top gaming schedule this past weekend, I had no time to spare for more than a skill bump for EVE. Based on thier info and time of incident, I guesstimate they are European time zone players, so I'm willing to wager I can safely resume rock munching in a few hours. Ironically, my corpmates (some of them) wanted to kick kiester and wardecc them. After all, they only outnumber us 3:1. ^_^ (They are in an alliance, we are not.)
So, long story short fellas, keep your eyes peeled for such shenannigans, 'cause you never know ...

Which system is this? I'm taking small bites out of Amdonen for now - I left my travel mouse at home, unfortunately.
Kor-Azor Prime.
And we've got a few applicants for Lust/Wrath, it seems. Amai was suggesting being Lust rather than Wrath...
Viz was looking for the Lust position since Amai was already Wrath. If Amai wants Lust, I'm sure Viz won't mind being Wrath. You'd have to ask him, though.

Signs of a long time EVE player includes the use of the following arcane terms:
indy-mining
convo
KOS
out-jam
ratloot
wardecc
I presume that "indy-mining" means mining with an industrial ship, which in my experience is a long and arduous task.
"Convo" is EVE's version of a private message, known in many MMOs as a 'tell' or 'whisper.'
"KOS" is kill-on-sight.
"Out-jam" must mean 'have more sensor jammers than I have sensors' but I could be wrong.
"Ratloot" refers to modules and other equipment dropped from NPC ships, often referred to as 'rats.' This is presumably short for 'pirates.'
"Wardecc" I can only assume is short for 'war declaration.'

Well i don't want to make him mad (get it, Wrath? ha ha), but wouldn't it be slightly more appropriate if the only female character in the corp was the Runelord of Lust and the hulking Brutor bruiser was the Runelord of Wrath? ;D

hehe i was in a .4 place and was ambushed; they didnt get the web on me only an interdictor to stop warps; hehe them suckers couldnt catch me for all their loudmouthed prattle they sent me; my afterburners were kicked up and they chased me through two systems but didnt get nothin but my exhaust :) there ships were to big and two slow.
yeah, i probably got real lucky but it still counts
well, so far this game has been so easy it is kinda boring; I havent died once even fighting like 15 pirates at once and only took a small amount of hull damage a couple times and I dont think I am anything special. the task I get are pretty repetative and there doesnt seem to be any storyline at all...I just dont feel like I am doing anything; contributing anything or such; I just make money hand over fist but have nothing to spend it on besides bullets and an occasional repair. I have vaults full of stuff in several bases cause I dont have the right upgrade skill sets yet. I doubt any of the minerals I get from pod drops are worth very much as you miners can get a whole bunch of stuff very quickly.
Is there a place to go with more interesting missions? most guys wont even talk to me and I have never done anything to play with anyone else...

Oh, do not discount the minerals from reprocessing loot so quickly. I would also check the loot's "meta" level, which is a numerical rating of how good it is. 1 is vanilla tech 1 (subpar), 5 is tech 2, so the best rat loot is meta 4, just a hair below tech 2.
Missions are by nature repetitive but more or less a necessary evil to get those nice high standings benefits. NPCs won't pod you (that I've ever heard about at least) - but if you get caught with your britches down, you'll burn through a LOT of money real fast bringing yourself back up to speed. Especially if you are replacing any implants. Every 10 to 20 regular missions you should get a storyline mission, which has a much nicer reward and are generally at least vaguely entertaining to do. Over time, the standings with a given NPC corp amount to a great deal (unlocking higher level agents, discounting to completely negating skim of your reprocessings, permitting jump clone installations) as does the security status. If the latter number goes too far negative, you will be shot on sight by the cops and naval ships around the jump gates as well as sentry guns.
If you're game to PvP, you can travel to Alenia and see if the BORG alliance chaps are still up for thier desire to blow stuff up of course ...
The majority of the 'making a difference' part comes from player interactions and alliance memberships, operating out in no-sec space, stuff like that. It generally takes time to get comfortable with the others in you area too, as people are wary of being sucker punched by gankers.

^_^ Yes, those are all sure signs of a long-term EVE player, is the use of the slang unique to the game.
Fatespinner, you are astute:
Indy-mining is indeed mining in an industrial ship, primary purpose is to avoid ore thieves (since most mining is done from ship to jettison canister) while simultaneously enabling yourself to mine away from the keyboard.
Convo = conversation = tell or in-game private chat.
KOS = kill on sight.
ratloot = NPC pirate (rat) loot, especially coined in how the rats are the only ones who 'poo' out named loot items that are neither tech 1 or tech 2. Cruder colloquialisms apply of course...
wardecc = war declaration. Never fun for the peacefully-inclined.
outjam = basically, I should be able to generate more of a jam rating than the target's sensor strength. In the context of the post, I was basically stating the only ships that would generate more jamming power are jamming-specific ships, of which the scorpion battleship is probably the best known.

Okay, I'm working my way up the ladder to a Hulk as we speak. I'm still quite a ways off time-wise, but skill-wise I'm practically there!
I am currently training Starship Command IV, which will finish tonight right after I get home from work. From there I will begin the following skill ladder:
- Astrogeology IV (3d, 14h)
- Astrogeology V (19d, 12h)
- Mining Barge IV (6d, 17h)
- Mining Barge V (31d, 6h)!
- Exhumers I (2h)
- Exhumers II (6h)
- Exhumers III (1d, 2h)

You may want to make sure you have the learning skills for the primary and secondary attributes on those skills at level 4, may cut some time off...
I have already done this, at least with the primary (Perception) attributes. The secondary attribute (Willpower) skill for most of them is only trained up to level 2. I might train it to 3 at some point. EVEMon tells me that it'll only save about a day anyway.
Anyway, sadly folks, I think I am done with EVE.
If anyone can figure out how to get the gear off my 3 chars, they are welcome to it.
Aww. :( Well, it was good having you around. EVE is definitely not a game for everyone, so I wouldn't want you to spend money on something you aren't enjoying.
Unfortunately, the only way we can get gear from your characters is if you log on and hand them to us. If you've got any time left on your account at all, I would log on and see if you can dump all of your ISK into the corporate wallet. Every little bit helps.

No time left, it ran out last night, and I was playing chew tug with the dog...
For anyone who wanders by wondering, I thought EVE was a good game, but I ran into 2 problems.
#1, there wasn't enough that made me want to keep going. I mostly play games for the plot, and just gathering money and skill points didn't do it for me.
#2, I was having trouble playing "my way". I was having a lot of fun running a missile frigate captain, until I got a mission where the waypoint dropped me in range of multiple pirates... by the time i locked on, i was taking hull damage. I was insured, and was back in space in a few minutes, but there was no way I could finish that mission without a team, and I tend to avoid team play
Anyway, I wanted to give the game a fair review, and it is overall good, very pretty, and had decent depth. Unfortunately, there is no plot driving you forward, and finding a fun niche, especially starting out, seems hard

Yeah, the plot in EVE is pretty much non-existant. If you're looking for a real story-based game, this isn't it. I agree 100% with you there.

It sounds like your problem was a result of one of two things. Either:
a) You took a mission from a higher level agent than you were equipped to deal with. Every agent who gives missions has a 'Level' and a 'Quality' rating. From everything I've researched, the agent's 'Level' determines how difficult the missions are. The agent's 'Quality' determines how good the payment and rewards for their missions are. Perhaps one of the veterans could shed some light on this analysis and at least tell me if I'm right or wrong.
b) You say 'missile frigate captain' which leads me to believe that you were still piloting a frigate. Frigates are not equipped to handle groups of enemies. With a minimal investment of time (an hour at most), you should have been able to train the skill to upgrade to a destroyer, which is essentially a 'heavy frigate' that is much, much more capable of sustained combat. I'm guessing that the 'missile frigate' you're talking about was a Kestrel. Kestrels have wax paper for armor and their shields are about as resilient as saran wrap. They are probably the worst vessel possible for direct confrontation. I know this because I own one. It is essentially my 'sniper ship.' The Caldari destroyer, the Cormorant, has about 4 times the shield capacity and double the armor and structure of the Kestrel. The downside, unfortunately, is that the Cormorant only supports a single missile launcher (but can support up to 7 turrets).

I double checked, it was a level 1 mission, quality -5
And it was a frigate only mission so being able to pilot a destroyer or cruiser. Not to mention the fact that the caldari destroyer has only a single launcher mount, which isn't enough for a missile boat.
I think it was more the semi random set up of the mission, and where the acceleration gate dumped me off.
I think the really heartbreaking part was the 1+ million credits i had spent on 4 meta level 4 launchers before that mission, which didn't even get to fire at that way point.
(By the way, if someone can figure out how to find the wreck, it still has all 4 launchers on board)
but anyway, it was more than that, as I was running missions for a different agent, and had started getting the same ones over again. I don't need the plot of the lord of the rings to keep me interested in a game, but i need more than "ahh pirates are attacking", "ahhh, moore pirates are attacking", "aha, we found the hidden pirate base, "wash, rinse, repeat"

Oooh, yeah, I know that mission. Believe it or not, destroyers count as frigates (Vizagrim and I learned this the hard way) but that particular mission did take two people to complete. Sorry to hear about the launchers. Unfortunately, I believe wrecks disappear after an hour or two if they aren't recovered.
Yeah, I've noticed the redundant questlines as well. It seems like the very heart and soul of this game is based around forming a corporation, hoarding resources, getting your skills up, and driving deep into low-sec space to establish a starbase and rule your own corner of the galaxy, fending off pirates and hostile players the whole time.
Really, once we get to that point, I think it'll be fun as all hell. It's getting there that takes some time.

Just to give you guys a heads up I'm going not going to continue for the time being. Game is lots of fun, but I really should spend the fall working on things around the house (since I put off a lot due to summer temps). Perhaps this winter I'll come back. In the interim, I'll be warping all my stuff to the corporate warehouses for your enjoyment. Have fun and kill some rats for me!

Just so people are aware... the corp structure is being set up along seven branches, each one headed by a Director or the CEO. We're tagging each branch's lead as a Runelord, as a nod to our common grounds here on Paizo.
Runelords, and specific branch, and whoever has the role:
Runelord of Wrath - Security and mission-running - Vizagrim
Runelord of Lust - PvP fleet ops - Amai
Runelord of Gluttony - Industry - Fatwatai
Runelord of Greed - Corp Management - Khellias
Runelord of Envy - Research and Development - No One
Runelord of Sloth - Trade and Marketing - No One
Runelord of Pride - Diplomacy and Recruitment - No One
Who knows? Someday, if we get enough people in the corp, working together, maybe we'll end up the Seven Swords Alliance, with each Runelord ruling over an entire corp... Maybe even working with or against the powerhouses in 0.0 space, like BoB.

ran into this mission over the weekend. took a frigate the first time around was able to take out a couple before i just got swamped warped out went back in with my destroyer found it to be tricky but doable . lost about 75% of m armour but survived.i found if when i got in and was in range i headed away as fast as i could only slowing down to get back in range of a few at a time.

For the people getting into shield/armor/hull, we have modules you can get out of the corp hangars to repair the damage; this can be incredibly useful.
Also, check optimal ranges, damage types on the enemies you're facing, and how your ammo adjusts the optimal range. And feel free to ask for help from the rest of the corp; even I can lend a hand if I'm within a few jumps, despite being mainly skilled to non-combat.

Hello all,
Been working on getting my wife's permission to add another game to my MMO list, and finally got it. Luckily it was still during trial account time as well so I didn't lose any time in the account. Am interested in joining, if you all can use a Gallente soldier (name: Mynthor) in the corp. Currently running with the Gallente destroyer (Catalyst) as my main ship, with a couple of frigates running backup just in case something happens. Working on getting skills up to the point I can use battleships , and also do mining on the side. Usually play EVE during day, then switch over to other MMOs during the night while doing longer training sessions (ahh, the joys of being a stay at home parent :P )

Yeah, we could definitely use another gun bunny! You'll need to get yourself to either the Inherent Implants station in Amdonen or our branch office at the Joint Harvesting Plantation in Kor-Azor Prime to apply. Once you submit your application, one of the Runelords will accept you into the corp as soon as they can. One thing, though, is that the vast majority of us play at night, so we might not see you that often if you typically play EVE during the day. Still, you would be welcome to contribute to the corp even when we're not around and you would have access to our facilities.
Are you primarily interested in doing missions and occassional guard duty or are you more of a PvP nut?

I thought I would provide a little bit more in-depth info on our intentions for each of the branches (I think we should refer to them as 'swords' to keep with the theme):
***Wrath - Security and Mission-running***
This division's primary responsibility is the safety of our non-combat members. Often, unarmed mining vessels will come under attack by NPC pirates during extended mining operations in lower security areas. In especially low-security zones, other players may seek to destroy mining vessels to secure the loot and salvage. The Sword of Wrath is responsible for preventing this from happening.
Additionally, Wrath helps fund the corporation by running missions in their spare time (i.e. when they aren't needed to guard anyone). Wrath is also responsible for aiding other members in completing difficult missions.
***Lust - PvP Fleet Ops***
This division's primary responsibility is the destruction of corporate enemies and the securing of territory in hostile zones. Lust represents the 'front-line' against enemy players (and, to a lesser degree, NPC pirate camps). If hostile players are camping a jump gate, harrassing corp members, or destroying and/or stealing our property, the Sword of Lust is our retribution.
Often, when venturing into low-security zones, a member of Lust will be sent in first to determine if the area is safe. If it is not safe, Lust's job is to make it safe before Gluttony and Wrath arrive to perform whatever business they have there. Lust and Wrath are closely related and we expect their fields of expertise to overlap somewhat, especially in low-security zones where Gluttony and Sloth members are just as likely to be attacked by PCs as they are NPCs.
***Gluttony - Industry***
This division's primary responsibility is the acquisition of material resources through mining and manufacturing. The Sword of Gluttony is comprised of miners and industrial experts who secure the various minerals and components needed by the corporation and manufacture ships, weapons, ammunition, and any other goods that the corporation requires.
Just as Gluttony benefits from the protection offered by Wrath and Lust, so too does Wrath and Lust benefit from the equipment and resources produced by Gluttony.
***Greed - Corp Management***
This division is the central management of the corporation. The responsibilities of the Sword of Greed are to monitor the use of corporate resources, allocate personnel to appropriate divisions, mediate corporate disputes, and ensure overall corporate profitability and cohesion.
***Envy - Research and Development***
This division's primary responsibility is the research and development of new technologies for the corporation. The Sword of Envy is encouraged to seek out databases and interfaces, as well as the relevant skills, needed to produce higher levels of technology. Whether it be advanced mining lasers for Gluttony, advanced sensor jammers for Lust, or high-tech missile launchers for Wrath, Envy serves to upgrade the effectiveness and efficiency for all corp members.
This division is currently undeveloped because we lack the funds and the skills necessary to get this started. Most likely, the Runelord of Envy will be someone who gets promoted into the position after working within one of the established divisions for awhile.
***Sloth - Trade and Marketing***
This division's primary responsibility is the sales and marketing of surplus corporate goods and also the purchase and/or trade of goods found outside the corporation. The Sword of Sloth browses the market for goods requested by the other divisions and attempts to secure them at the lowest prices possible, often requiring travel to neighboring systems for product pick-up. Sloth also removes any corporate overstock (as assigned by Greed) and distributes it to markets where the goods can receive the highest market value, funneling the profit of such sales back into the corporation to promote productivity for all.
This division is currently undeveloped because we lack a substantial enough supply of goods for resale and we do not have a large enough player base that requires trade convoys to facilitate the delivery of supplies from one place to another yet.
***Pride - Diplomacy and Recruitment***
This division's primary responsibility is the negotiation of treaties, alliances, and contracts with individuals outside the corporation. The duties of the Sword of Pride also include recruiting new and promising members into the organization. When encountering other corporations in low-security zones, Pride is responsible for establishing peace and negotiating terms of use with the rival group. If Pride cannot succeed, then they are the ones who, with Greed's approval, can declare war upon an opposing faction and permit Lust's warriors to engage them in open space.
This division is currently undeveloped because we do not presently require diplomatic relationships with other corporations, due to the fact that we are still largely confined to high-security space by our limited skill and ability.

Wow, Fate... WOW! An excellent write-up, my good sir. :)
confined to high-security space by our limited skill and ability.
It's so true it's sad!
Of course, once I get back from Korvosa I'll have some sweet skills (mostly in the learning tree) that should set me up nicely for later PVP action.
*needs to read up on PKK in EVE*
*needs to get back to work first*

The profession you choose when you create your character determines what abilities your character will excel at from the beginning and also (to a lesser degree) determines which kinds of skills your character will be able to advance soonest and most effectively.
The character creation system for EVE gives you a series of choices to make regarding your character's attributes and abilities. The choices made during character creation are as follows:
- Race
- Bloodline
- Stat Adjustment
- Ancestry
- Profession
- Specialty
- Appearance
- Intelligence
- Perception
- Charisma
- Memory
- Willpower
Most skills that fall into a given group have the same attributes associated with them. For example, almost all of the piloting skills (required to use larger and more powerful ships) have Perception as their Primary attribute and Willpower as their Secondary. Science skills have Intelligence as their Primary and Memory as their Secondary. Social skills have Charisma as their Primary and Willpower as their Secondary. Most weapon skills are Perception Primary, Willpower Secondary too.
Once you've chosen your race and bloodline, you receive 5 points to spend however you wish in your various attributes. I strongly suggest specializing in a couple of attributes instead of trying to make everything roughly equal. After this stat adjustment phase, you get to choose your character's ancestry. This reflects the type of upbringing your character had and has an effect on your attributes as well. Most ancestries award a total +4 bonus to attributes, either in the form of +1/+3, +2/+2, or +4 to a single attribute.
Finally, we get to the profession and specialty section. While your attributes determine the speed at which you learn things, your profession and specialty determine what you can do. There are three professions: Military, Industry, and Business. Each one of these professions has several specialties to choose from:
- Military characters can choose either Soldier or Special Forces.
- Industrial characters can choose either Prospecting or Engineering.
- Business characters can choose either Executive Commander or Entrepreneur.
There are numerous guides available to give you the specifics on these professions and specialties, but for our purposes (if you read my previous post about the different divisions of Seven Swords Ltd.) you will likely be assigned to the following divisions based on profession and specialty:
- Wrath: Military (Soldier); Business (Executive Commander)
- Lust: Military (Soldier or Special Forces)
- Gluttony: Industry (Prospector or Engineer)
- Greed: Any; this division is based more on player abilities than character.
- Envy: Industry (Engineer)
- Sloth: Business (Executive Commander or Entrepreneur)
- Pride: Any, as Greed, though we recommend at least training some of the contracting skills.
Hope this helps all you would-be corp members! Apply today!

getting closer to being able to use a Caldari cruiser and was looking for suggestions. what is good and what is not .
Well, I haven't had a chance to try out any of the Caldari cruisers yet, so I would advise just taking a look at the stats and seeing what appeals to you. If you like missiles, go for the one with more missile slots. If you're having trouble staying alive, go for the one with more armor/shields.

Assuming you don't want to get fancy, your choices are the Moa or the Caracal. The others are logistics and EWAR ships.
Caracal is the missile boat (big kestrel) the Moa is the more rounded ship (big merlin)

Are you primarily interested in doing missions and occassional guard duty or are you more of a PvP nut?
Definitely missions/guard duty. In fact that is actually what my concept for the character as I round out his skills is. Former soldier, now doing mining, and the occasional 'merc' run to supplement income. Granted EVE doesn't seem to supply much for RP stuff within the game as it's not overly story driven, but I still like to do what I can with character concepts. Currently on a 20 jump run through 'safe' (hi-sec) areas to get to Amdonen as I post this.
As far as not seeing you all during the day, I knew that. I will be on occasionally at night as well, so hopefully I'll be able to catch you some time.

Hey guys, I just wanted to let you all know I canceled my EVE account today. Playing this game only reminded me why I like WoW so much.
Anyway, the account is good through the end of the month, so feel free to pull all the stuff I have in my personal hanger at HQ into the corp bank.
Good luck guys!
Unfortunately, we can't pull stuff from your personal hangar into the corp hangar. You'd have to dump it in yourself. :(
We'll miss you and your ass-kicking cruiser.

My brother has sold his soul to EVE Online, so you guys could go check out his corporation-Otkus Society [Otk]. He said they are becoming an alliace in about ten days, so you guys could join that too. He says they are extremely friendly towards newbs. My bro's the head of industry, name of Callie L'Aliel.

Sweet. I'll let Kassil/Khellias know (or he can read it here himself).

It's been a couple weeks, so I thought I'd bump this thread again for anyone who is interested.
We've got a corporation set up on EVE Online and are looking to expand our ranks. The corporation setup is built around the Seven Swords of Sin (featured in the like-named GameMastery Module) and we've got only a few members who are currently active, so we're looking for more willing souls to join us in our endeavors.
If you're interested in joining up, send an in-game mail or 'whisper' to Khellias, Mynthor, or Fatwatai and we'll get you set up!

THREAD RESURRECTION!!!!!!
Just bumping this to let everyone know that the Seven Swords Ltd. corporation in EVE is still looking for members to fill our ranks. We've had a number of people come and go, but we're still here in EVE space! The game is free for 14 days, so you've got nothing to lose for giving it a shot. Read up on the information discussed thus far in this thread for more details!

oi sort of came back to the game to give it another try. part of me thinks im insane for doing so but im going to try it anyhow.
i noticed that i am nolonger apart of the corp. is that a result of me being gone for so long and automatic from the game side or did i just get bumped for inactive from the corp. dont worry about it though . but i may just hold onto my 100 shares for ransome . :)
currently just doing so skill training and some other things just to get back into the game.

That would be the "These people have been gone for better than a month and while the inflated corp headcount is cool, I do not think it will fool anyone" purging I did.
Feel free to hold the shares as ransom. ;) I have ways around the concern of shareholders... Muhuhaha.

for some reason i thought you would have a way. meh who needs share holders....
not sure if i re joined i would be adding anything other than some credits from taxes for awhile as well as still working on if im going to stick around or not.

erf decided to try mining with a badger just doing high sec mining . so far i have been mining for about a hour and have yet to fill up getting close very close but not full yet.. i hope this was worth it
Depends on how high-sec. And Badgers are good mainly for AFK-mining... Log onto the Seven Swords chat channel in-game and you can ask the rest of us for tips and advice and decide if you want to sign back up for the corp.

I usually read a book while mining or chat with my corp-mates about whatever topic comes to mind.
I've also recently joined with the the Seven Swords and wholeheartedly agree that the more the merrier.

I'm Someone Else's Problem, right up until the moment that I attack. It's amazing how easily I blend into crowds and such, considering I'm 6'5" and am built like the proverbial brick sh*thouse.
