I had a pretty good night last night. A mostly quiet evening mining in the Amdonen system. I don't think I encountered a single pirate all night. I also decided that, if I'm going to be doing a lot of corporate manufacturing, I should probably start training up my manufacturing and refining skills. So, with that in mind, last night I picked up the following skillbooks and trained them to level 1:
  • Refining Efficiency (4% reduction in refinery waste per level)
  • Mass Production (allows multiple things to be produced at the same time)
  • Small Energy Turret (relying on ammo sucks and consumes valuable resources)
  • Iron Will (stat boosts are good)
  • Spatial Awareness (ditto)
  • Empathy (double ditto)
I also gained a new rank of Weapon Upgrades (up to level 2 now), which reduces the CPU consumption of weapon turrets (making more room for mining lasers and miscellaneous modules). And, after all that, I upgraded my clone since I had just crossed the 1.2m skillpoint mark and my previous clone was only good for 1.3m. My new clone supports 2m. That should be good for awhile. All totalled, I think I spent close to a million ISK last night.

I've starting mining Scordite again, just because I could really use the Tritanium and Pyerite for manufacturing. When I need money again, I'll go back to Kernite (and see if I can't bring some friends to do relays, because that stuff is heavy).

Did you use up all the Trit and Pyerite in the production bay? o.0

And we have the laser BPOs as well. Some of them require Zydrine, though.

I occasionally get small amounts of minerals from reprocessing loot I take off pirates. I'll start hanging onto that and bring it to HQ once I fill my cargo hold with it. Unless I get low on moneys in the meantime, of course. ;D

I wanna know what you're splurging on if you run low that soon, given the expense account I gave you, O Security Chief. Buying new ships every hour or sommat?

Also, Zydrine and MEgacyte both have significant value. Megacyte is used in Strip Miner modules, which our miners will eventually want when they get to the stage of flying Mining Barges.

Willam Fetch is online. Caldari Special Ops. Transport specialist, command secondary.

PS: Is the game usually this buggy? I think I'm kicked as much as I'm playing.

They've had some hardware/database issues the last day or so. It'll be straightened out soon enough.

Yeah, the 2.2.1 Revelations patch did not seem to work as well as they would have liked...

Generally, the game is smooth, but once in a while it goes ape and you just wind up riding the storm.

Of course, since I don't need that particular 'fix' every night, that probably helps too ...

Kassil wrote:

Ok. I was just worried because I'm having fun, but I have not been able to buy a new ship yet! And I have plans for at least two! So I'll most likely get an account... but I wanted to make sure I can play when I have time since after the initial "PLAY PLAY PLAY" period, it will be less frequent.

Liberty's Edge

I am still exploring the system, so next time I log in you can expect to see another new character...

YAY for 2 week trials.

Of course the 2 week trial is probably why I feel so rushed, and do so many stupid things...

You'll do fine, have no worries Dragonmann.

Not so much worried as trying to figure out in two weeks if the game is fun enough to keep my attention, and be worth the subscription fee.

Part of that is finding a character I click with.

My caldari engineer was boring, and incompetent in a fight

My gallente SFO is more fun, but the ships are terrible (looking, and i don't like the fighting style)

So tonight I think I will roll a Caldari Soldier and see if that is the one

Do keep in mind, just because you start off able to fly the one race does not mean you are stuck with that race.

For example, you may find that you like a particular 'roll' the best (say, your Gallente SFO) but really jones to drive missile ships (Caldari). No problem - migrate to Caldari space, buy the Caldari Frigate et al books and get to training, missioning and mining.

Heck, I started out as a Prospector, but for years almost never mined, running missions and doing anything else but munch rocks. As far as a given skill grouping goes, at this point my Science skills exceed my Spaceship Command skills in terms of total skill points. (I *really* hate not being able to build my own stuff.) I've learned to fly everything basic (frig and cruiser) in terms of ships but Minmatar - and can fire lasers and hybrids equally well - while still staring at a pile of about 12 or so more skill books to tack onto the 183 skills I already have.

And of course there is the graphics overhaul to look forward to whenever they get that done too ...

Liberty's Edge

I probably would look at it that way if my time was infinite. But given I am 7 days into my 14 day trial, I haven't reached "wow this is so cool i have to pay for it" and hours of skill grinding to tweak my character to my desired play style isn't going to happen in the next 7 days...

Liberty's Edge

Willam is a lot different from my first character. I'm a Caldari Demtri Special Ops. I've started doing the missions for both my characters beyond the tutorial, and Willam has been nothing but kill missions, while the other was a good mix of delivery and kills. I got a condor from the last mission willam ran last night. MUCH faster ship than the starting one, as well as better all around. My only problem with it is on these missions I like to complete the kills then fill my hold with ore. The condor only has one turret point, so its either a gun or a drill. I'm definitely enjoying him much more, and I think a guy like this will keep me playing. So I recommend the solder :-)

Few questions though. I picked up some launchers but have not tried them. Do they require ammo, or do they have a basic missile until you add further ammo? Are launchers ok as primary weapons or should I have a railgun as well?

the missle launchers come unloaded. so you will need to buy some or travle to headquarters and pick some up from the corp supplies.

using them you will want to stay about 20k away from the enemy . i have found that they cant seem to hit you a that range . but you need to make sure you have reloads in your cargo hold which you can transfer to the launchers while you are out there.

Launchers, as fars as I know, require ammo, and they really rock. They were the only reason my Engineer could survive 10 seconds in a fight, because he could expunge things from the heavens before they got close.

No, but I also don't like being a drain on the corporate resource pool, so unless I'm making something for the corporation, I tend to use my own materials.

So I made a series of bad decisions and got pod killed by a PK in 0.4 space this morning. This had several negative effects on me: I lost my ship (but I had insurance, so yay for that), I lost the cargo I was carrying for a courier mission, I lost the 1 million ISK collateral on the cargo, and I lost reputation in the universe because I couldn't complete the mission.

I have one more courier contract waiting for me to finish. The problem is, it starts in 0.1 space. Ha ha ha! So I'm going to try to do that one, but I think I'm just going to get pod killed again and lose even more reputation. :\

On the other hand, this has inspired me to look into the gray world of PKK... ;)

Liberty's Edge

I didn't have the pod killing, but I picked up a mission last night to wipe out a smuggler convoy in gallente space...

I went in with one frigate, expecting it to be lightly defended, mostly because the briefing said it would be...

They had missiles

I had blasters

I was taking hull damage before I could get a shot off

lost that ship

I had insurance, but all my good guns were gone, i could replace them, or the ship... I put the guns on the lighter, but fast ship, picked up drones

managed to pick off a target before getting spanked...

ended up losing both my frigates, most of my wealth, and overall having a very bad day.

Good news is I still have a 700k destroyer in dock, but I have no guns for it...

Ugh. Yeah, I've had days like that as well.

Kinda makes me want to head closer to HQ and just play guard monkey and courier for the miners. It's boring, but it's safe and relatively lucrative. ;)

But on the other hand... blowing up bad guys is just TOO much fun. :D

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, EVE has one more week to really hook me, or I'll probably give my money to CoH once I have money again...

I am just looking for jump in, have fun, hang out with people I know, or beating up baddies.

Think of it this way: In real life, you don't run out and become a CEO as soon as you enter the work force. You start in the mail room. It's boring, it's tedious, but it pays the bills. Eventually, you build up experience and reputation and start moving your way up. As you move up, you make more money and get better things.

I kinda like the fact that EVE is a very gradual game, moreso than most MMOs. It means that I can take things easy and still make progress. Someday, years from now, I will have a super-ultra-destroyer with a gadzillion missile bays. Until then, I have a mining ship and some refining skills. Asteroid belts are the mail room, IMO.

That makes a lot of sense. The thing is, I've already paid a bunch of dues in life. It took me 10 years of struggle to get the job I have today. When I pay real-world moneys and time units to play a game, I want instant gratification. Or, at least, I want to blow up bad guys. Early and often. Fortunately, most games (including EVE) are pretty much geared to blowing up bad guys from the get-go.

And just like in real life, the guys who are patient and frugal (like you) will have tonnes more moneys than me. But hey... I get to blow up bad guys. So I'm happy. :)

That is a really long and convoluted way of saying "Different strokes for different folks." Or "YMMV." Or "Men are from 2M1207 b, women are from GQ Lup b."

Hehe, yeah, it takes all kinds. I'll be honest, I'm one of those people who would play games like Starcraft or Warcraft II for way longer than I actually needed to just because I liked securing lots of resources. I would then blow my entire savings on one huge, overpowering death fleet and stomp the crap out of my enemies in one fell swoop. I was never a fan of zerg swarm tactics or any such early-game nonsense. Yeah, swarm tactics were effective, but they weren't fun. Not for me, anyway. (I was also a fan of building numerous nuke silos in Starcraft and deploying a pack of Ghosts near the enemy base to just sit back and nuke it into oblivion.)

I am the tortoise.

Oh, there is a way to win in EVE. Eventually, once I've amassed several hundred trillion ISK, I can sell it all to one of those 'Buy ISK Cheap' sites and score myself enough cash to retire on. :)

Not really. It takes something like 500,000 ISK for $1.

come now, that's winning at life not the MMO. Hmmm... *calculates* $1.5m dollars required to retire on $50k per year for 30 years... that's 750b Isk.

Ah, my friend, you are not taking into account the beauty of compound interest!

*busts out his awesome State Farm Life Annuity Rate Calculator*

If I, a 24-year-old male, had the capital to invest in a life annuity right now, I could guarantee myself $50,000 a year for the rest of my life with the low initial investment of only $935,587.97. And, as I intend to survive beyond age 54, that'll last me a hell of a lot longer than 30 years. ;)

Finances. It's what's I do.

I was assuming a retirement of around the age of 50-60. Too much free time can be a bad thing.

Oh and yes I did forget about interest, hell if you got it all now I'd invest about $750k of it in stocks and bonds possibly granting me even more over time and periodically selling off to maintain a constnt $750k invested at any given time.

Dark Archive RPG Superstar 2013 Top 32

Rhavin wrote:

With a deferred life annuity, I could invest a mere $271,497 today and have it pay out $50,000 a year starting on my 50th birthday to last the rest of my life.

I love interest... but only when I'm receiving it, not paying it!

yes interest is a wonderful thing.

Oh and I hate how I always double post, I think it has to do with my nasty habit of back-clicking or refreshing in the middle of editing/replying.

I think his mental calculator has fizzled from too many years calculating hit-dice and attack rolls in the gamming industry.

Option 1) Right click and select 'Split Stack', then enter the amount you want divided.

Option 2) Shift, then click and drag what you want to split, and enter the amount you want split off.

Ahhhhh... the joys of capitalism.

I have discovered all kinds of awesomeness immediately after purchasing my shiny new mining barge. Behold, Fatespinner's ingredients for EVE wealth:

  • 0.9 system
  • obscene quantities of pyroxeres
  • virtually zero competition
  • mining barge with strip miner equipped
  • nearby high-yield refinery
  • extraordinarily good prices for selling ore/minerals

I have found all of these things in the same place, and only 1 jump from HQ, too! Last night alone I earned 2.8 million ISK and didn't have to fire a single shot or even leave the same asteroid belt. I should have access to the medium mining barge (Retriever) by the end of the week. I'm using the small one (Procurer) now.

The first month is actually $19.99. They call it an 'activation fee,' but it does include your first month of play. This is still a vast improvement over WoW's $30-40 "activation fee" (a.k.a. buying the game discs at the store, which is doubled if you want the expansion). From there on, you can set up your account to either bill monthly, every 3 months, every 6 months, or yearly. Obviously, the bigger the time block that you set up, the cheaper the per month rate is. I opted for the 3-month cycle myself, and the game works out to less than $12/mo. ($34.99 for 3 months means ~$11.66/mo.).
