Though, it makes for a great picture, seeing Shalelu sitting on the ground, covering her ears, saying "Stop making fun of me!" while Meri looks on going "WTF?"
... In ANIME style. Muahahaha...
Aw, man, now I can't get the idea of Fred Perry doing that picture, in the vein of his "Level Up" comics...

Shalelu's stats will be appearing in Pathfinder 3, when her role in Rise of the Runelords becomes a little more important. If you have her go with the PCs earlier in Burnt Offerings, you should still do so; it's cool if the stats you build for her there dont' quite evolve into the same set of stats she has in "Hook Mountain Massacre" of course.
Kirth Gersen |
Heh, heh. I'm gonna have to have the goblins capture her before then and cut here ears off for use in construction (two or three pairs will roof a goblin hut). This could provide great motivation for her to assist the PCs against the humanoids.
But I'll make sure not to let them kill her off. Thanks for the warning.

Gotta say, I love those ears.
Truly madly and without reservation. Now, bring the hate, bring the napalm ! =)
I'm with Nevermind here; I love the longer ears. For those who think Shalelu's ears in the book illustration are too long, I point you to Grant Gould, an artist in another thread who redrew Shalelu and toned the ears down while still keeping them long in the new Pazio style:

Yup, much better, but still retains the cartoon-flavor.

As long as they stay far away from manga or WOW cartoons, I'm fine with it. And that Downer-guy. I mean, Downer is cool, but I wouldn want that kind of art in the module itself.

I like the way that Paizo has been reimagining the various races, whether it's goblins or elves or kobolds. Count me as in favour of the big ears. :)
I second this statement. Paizo's new take on creatures give flavor to the setting. Also, I am tired of LoTR elves in D&D. Get rid of the hobbit (halfling are common-elves in my Varisia).
vikingson |
Gotta say, I love the "pointy" ears too. Makes elves more otherworldly instead of just "humans with 'beautiful' genes".
After all, they aren't humans at all. never have been - and never shall.
Oh, and I am an old-fart.... well above the equator of thirty at least.
PS - 2 to hide ifor elves for the ears though, they keep poking =)
Verminlord |
For those who don't know. When D&D arrived in Japan, they had their own ideas about designs. So they made elves with extremly long ears, as you can see in anime classics (Record of the Lodoss War-Deedo 1990). Later on, you found them in independent comics like Poison Elves. Long time after that WoW adapted to their game (and notice that the WoW Elves nearly 2,20m tall and second largest players race in the game). So you can say, after the Japanese borrowed it for their D&D, Paizo borrowed it back. :-)

I've mentioned this before in other threads, but in the case of Shalelu, she was the first elf we ordered art for. We wanted long ears, and they'll remain long in our world. Although Shalelu's ears are too long.
Merisiel, the iconic rogue who's scheduled for the cover of Pathfinder 3, is more in line with how our elves will look. Long ears that don't quite go above the top of the head and eyes that don't show the whites. You'll also note that Shalelu's eyes in the picture in Pathfinder 1 aren't on model either since you can see the whites of her eyes... It's all part of the development process of creating a look for characters in our would.
We've got another picture of Shalelu coming in Pathfinder 3, in which her ears are a bit shorter.

Yaaay!
I'm already on record as saying Merisiel's "look" is perfectly acceptable, in my opinion. The first incarnation of Shalelu wasn't. But if iteration number two brings her back in line with Merisiel as the model, I say awesome! I like the fact that you're establishing Pathfinder's elves as somewhere between classic-D&D and World of Warcraft. I definitely think that's the ideal place to go. So kudos...

:(
Being a fan of Poison Elves I love the ears. Thanks for being willing to reimage some of the old D&D stand-bys.

I was curious how much I could do with the original art for Shalelu. Here's what I came up with after half an hour in photochop. :) Note the much bigger irises and the 2/3 size ears.
Shalelu
That looks just about perfect - though I imagine, even using that image, that Shalelu gets teased by other elves for her ears sticking out so much.
Sorta like Will Smith, I would think.

Shalelu
That's about the right ear length we're going for, and by Pathfinder 4 or 5 we'll probably have it more or less standardized so that ears go up to the top of the head or maybe a few hairs higher. Since art for 2 and 3 is already in and more or less beyond the point of change, there may be a few longer ears or shorter ears still waiting to ambush people and rile them up.

Yeah, I mostly did the edit because a lot of people were somewhat unhappy with the original (I am not among them), but might, maybe, possibly have liked the art style in general. Hopefully I or someone else with equal or greater Photoshop skills can do similar edits for any other portraits that peeve people.
Also, thanks for the positive feedback. All glory to the original artist (Kyle Hunter?), though. :D

Kruelaid, so wrong....but true I suppose.
Personally, I am an otaku (<---anime fan for those not in the know), I like the look. I can understand that some people might not like it, but hey its what Paizo wants (<-- and me too).
Besides before anyone goes and bashes Shalelu's ears against those of Merisiel, Humans can have different sized ears too. ^_^
Shalelu is just well endowed (ear-wise...we have no idea if in any other fashion).
I also like the idea of Elves looking different. The Vulcan/Romulan look elves have from Lord of the Rings and much of the previous canon D&D stuff never really satisfied me. This I definately prefer.

Yeah it's the eyes that are really setting the elves apart for me... they're scary! Makes the elves look more otherworldly than your average humanoid (almost alien gray like).

I like Gould's Shalelu better. More of an elven feel. The RoRL 1 picture looks like a big-earred teenager.

Here's what I did for Shalelu in Part 1... We didn't have the char sheet for the halfling rogue TWF. So I said, "OK, +4 Dex, studded leather, TWF feat, most rogue skills maxed." I basically had my stats for the party rogue.
Shalelu, I didn't have her help out with Thistletop; just had her escort the PCs there. Hmmm, should I have a fight on the way and fudge her stats? Nah!
I decided to Keep It Simple.

I really liked Arnold Tsang's pictures in ROTR 1. His blocky, line-heavy style is very unique and it definitely brings a sophisticated, yet gritty feel to the game. I'm going to show my players the art as is. I mean, come one guys, Shalelu is pretty in an earthy way and Nualia is absolutely stunning! Please keep this guy on board. He's definitely got a lot of talent to burn.
