Why, Mystara of course!
What's that? Why do I like Mystara best?
Well, since you asked...
...
- Bargle the Infamous can't forget Bargle!
...
Heh. I like Mystara also, probably mainly for sentimental/nostalgic reasons. And Bargle recently got covered in Dungeon - good (or in his case, bad) things just won´t die...

I've voted for homebrew simply because most of the worlds I've traveled to have been created in the mind of our DM. I do not like prepackaged, preset sceniaros or worlds as I find them too restrictive. Too many times, we as players have circumvented "pages and Pages" of preplanned activities. Thus to travel in worlds with 3 moons and pink skies is a true adventure.

Homebrew it is. *takes big gulp from a nice frothy mug of ale, wipes face with back of arm*
I know we are not talking about ales or wines here. Just needed to wet my throat.
I find that as both a player and DM I have had my most fun in homebrewed stuff. The imagination of everyone is allowed to run much more freely in my opinion. Unlike in packaged sets you don't often run into the problem of one ingenious idea suddenly having you skip most if not all of at least 1 chapter of the book. I know some will eventually pick at the the difference between adventure sets and world books, and will state you only find those problems in the adventure sets. This is not entirely true. I've run into many problems with both. All due to ingeinutiy. All in all my expeirence shows it to be better homebrewed with maybe a stolen map of a world for your own campaign.

What's your favorite campaign setting?
Edit: Greyhawk was originally accidentally omitted from the poll options. If you voted for "Other" instead of Greyhawk, you can change your vote.
(It might take awhile for the Greyhawk option to reappear.)
For me the list goes like this:
1. Al-Qadim2. Eberron
3. Mystara
4. Greyhawk
5. Iron Kingdoms
Now, that is if I limit myself to published settings. I love crafting my own settings and running in them.
As a player I enjoy any setting as long as the DM is comfortable with the setting and is having fun running the game.

Mm...homebrew...*takes a sip of mead*
There seems to be a preponderance of homebrewers on these 'ere boards. :)
What do you say we start a section on the messageboard for homebrew campaign settings? Alderac has one, and I'd love to see what other people have come up with!

"Homebrewers"?
Isn't the correct term "Moonshiners"?Or "Bootleggers"?

A lot of them I love. If I boil it down to one or two, I like the Realms pre-return of shade, and definately pre-blow-em-up-again.
Eberron I like for it's political intrigue.
and thanks to Paizo for giving me a love of Oerth.
Right now though, Pathfinder is all shiny and new. Guess I'll have to vote for the Realms though. Deepingdale has always been home to me.

Hmmm. I've never had any qualms about radically altering the campaign worlds I use... I wouldn't have time, I DM too often--without the support of my Greyhawk and now Pathfinder campaign material I would sink.
Same for scenarios. I've used many, but I have never used one as published, not since I was about 13 or 14 years old, anyway.

Well, I have to go with the Iron Kingdoms. It's very quickly become my small gaming circle favorite setting. I love running it, and I know they fellows love playing in it. Sadly we only get to play in that setting a couple of times a month. But with the material I own for it, and the ideas just generated from that material, I can see myself running this setting for many, many years.
As for close seconds: Darksun, Ravenloft, Al Qadim and Planescape are all settings that make me happy. I love Greyhawk, which is why i think I like Paizo's setting so much. Others that come up that I enjoy: Midnight this is ranking up there in settings. I'm currently playing a gnome defender in a Midnight campaign and having a rather good time. Forgotten Realms, just because it's so rich in flavor with all the fiction that's available. Of course that is also true of Dragonlance, though I do not own any of the Dragonlance RPG products.
There's a few settings on my shelf that I'm eager to try: mainly Dawnforge, and Morningstar. Sadly both of these runners ups to WotC setting competition don't have any support. This is particularly true of Morningstar, which only got a 160 page setting book, it really deserved more. The other campaign I'm eager to try is Oathbound. I love the concept and tone of the setting though worry about the execution.
Of course... there's my homebrew, which you think would be my favorite. But has been pushed to the back burner for the time being to let some ideas gestate.

Hmm, is the poll closed? I can't seem to place a vote. Anyway, my homebrew is my favorite.
Nope, I voted Laithoron well after you posted. The poll itself is in the side bar to your left. Took me a minute to realize where it was also.
So if you haven't found it, then that's where it is.Rune Scryber |
As an old-schooler I'll have to say Greyhawk, fond memories. I never really liked FR for some reason, except for reading the original Drizzt trilogy back in the day.
I just started a new game as a player in Eberron. I have to say I'm having fun with it. I'm personally not into the warforged thing, but I like the political intrigue of the dragonmarked houses.
edit: I really like the way Golarian is starting to take shape.

Oh ok, I'm used to other forums where the poll is always at the top and gets replaced by the results after voting. Thanks.

This is coming from the guy who last session didn't want to cast anything to help the people trapped in the _current_ house because you might need it for the people in the _next_ house. Yeah, that makes sense. If you took the time to think you might realise that I play Kaile like that because he doesn't want to die again. An overdeveloped sense of mortality if you will.
Or possibly I like making people feel sick when I trot out my saves, ac, attack roll bonuses and damage.
Kaile is pretty vain.

You probably think this thread is about you...

Seriously; is this poll over?
And is it worth resurrecting to include Golarion as a main choice, instead of falling under 'Other'?
CEBrown |
Too bad this poll doesn't allow ranking...
Ravenloft would get my "top billing" (especially the "Masque of the Red Death" 'sub-setting'), but Homebrew and Other (Garweeze Wurld) would take VERY close second and third spots, with Mystara and Spelljammer fighting for a distant fourth (Unless MotRD counts as "Other" - then the ranking would be Other (MotRD) > Other (Garweeze Wurld) > Ravenloft > Homebrew > Spelljammer > Mystara).

I had to vote other, since Al-Qadim wasn't listed. I know it's technically part of the FR setting, but only geographically. I tend to like more non-standard settings, so my top picks are:
1. Al-Qadim
2. Dark Sun
3. Planescape
4. Spelljammer
5. Eberron
For more "standard" settings, I've always been more of a Forgotten Realms fan than Greyhawk, but that is primarily due to the wealth of avaiable source material. From what I've discovered of Greyhawk through the Dungeon magazine adventure paths, I think I'd like it a lot if there were the quantity and quality of sourcebooks that other, more supported settings had.

I'm beginning to wonder if Fizz and I are the only people who've really given Iron Kingdoms a shot at this point.
Since this thread popped back up
Yeah Iron Kingdoms is great. It brings new elements in, mixes with a more military theme, plus they managed to keep the old flavor that I loved in sword and sorcery style.
Fatespinner I will have to give it up to you on turning me on to Iron Kingdoms. You said the most inspiring thing in some thread GUNMAGE.

Definitely the Forgotten Realms.
There is so much fluff around that even a DM who doesn't have any time at all to prepare an appropriate adventure background could run a really marvelous game.
Additionally my acquired knowledge through sourcebooks, novels, Eds answers and all other articles is far too advanced by now to simply shift to Greyhawk or Eberron.
Keveras |
Are they destroyed/not supported, perhaps, due to the edition change?
Yes, due to edition changes (plural) ;)
Planescape and Spelljammer are no longer supported (at least not by WotC) because of the switch from 2e to 3e.And the Realms, well. Actually they are not destroyed. At the moment it just occurs to many people that the new Realms will contain a suspiciously high number of features from other settings (Eberron and Dragonlance in particular). And they eliminated many NPCs (especially the epic level ones) and a few essential traits of old Realms (Weave). So, imho fans don't like such drastic changes ;)
