Worst uses for an artifact...

3.5/d20/OGL

So, what are the worst uses you could imagine for an artifact (either something you can think up, or something you've actually seen happen in play?)

I was paging through some of the monsters who have swallow whole, and thought - what if one of them swallowed the shield of Prator? I mean, as an artifact, it's neigh indestructable, so the purple worm or whatever won't be able to digest it. Eventually, it'll start moving through the worm's intestines - which won't be at all pleasant - and then it'll reach The End. Ouch.

I could just see my players using the Eye of Vecna as sling ammo...

Stick the hand of Vecna on a Staff of the Magi and use it as a back-scratcher.

Require the party to retrieve the Rod of Seven parts for a God of your choice...

then have said god use it as a toothpick and toss it away.

Propping up a three-legged couch with a Dearn's instant fortress.

well, I had a guy loose the cap to the everflowing bottle; the one that pours water out until you cap it; so he just put it down and walked away - a few years later a druid pc was investigating this huge lake and why it was there and found the cap and replaced it.

In the old rules; i had a barbarian sacrifice a powerful relic, from the prophesy that was supposed to be used at a certain time to save the day, for exps thereby ensuring the bad guys victory.

Ever seen a coward with a beserker sword; wow that is funny.

Not quite an artifact, but it is a lazy adventurer's method of taking care of that pesky goblin cave. Open it up and let the trouble float up to you. The hard part is waiting for it to eventually drain so you can retrieve the loot.

I once had a player discover a Sphere of Annihilation and the crown that lets you control it better (can't remember the name). He used it to burrow holes through walls, doors, just about anything but he NEVER used it against enemies because it "might destroy their loot."

Liberty's Edge

Spotlightin' deer with Daoud's Wondrous Lanthorn.

I'm not sure if playing "Iron Man" on Heward's Wondrous Organ (or whatever it was called) would be classified as 'worst' or 'best' use of an artifact.

Grand Lodge

Best.

No doubt about it.

Other appropriate organ music would be Iron Butterfly's "In a gadda-da-vita" - it is only, what, 18 minutes long?

I seem to remember a Simpson's episode where Bart switches out the normal church music with this song... Sounded good, too!

Never been in a long enough campaign to get any artifacts, but my party once used my last wish in an amulet of 3 wishes to change the gender of one of the other PCs :P

How about bowling with dragon orbs tho ?

That game didn't last terribly long because of how treasure-obsessed that group was. They disemboweled a dragon because one of them heard somewhere (bardic knowledge) that dragons will sometimes eat their hoard. All they found inside were some dead animal bones.

Use the Sword of Kas for rotisserie style chicken for the party's campfire at night....

This one has got to win the award for the "Most Suggestive Artifact Name Ever." Heward must be very proud.
