Budapest and Ireland

I'm leaving for Budapest, Hungary in a week. I'll be there for about three and a half weeks as part of an internship. After that, I'll be in Ireland for a week with a friend. I've never been to either of these places before. If anyone has any advice about either place, I'd really appreciate it :).

Well, most Europeans have a much closer personal distance than Americans in general; dont let it freak you out too much when you find that people you don't know stand really close to you; when I was in Europe a lot of people I knew said this made them edgy. hehe, dont get intoxicated and try to ride a bicycle on a wet cobblestone street; I have seen some spectacular accidents due to this. A lot of bar tenders like to take your identification of you run a tab (dont know about Ireland on this)so you might not want to do this; I have heard of it cause some amazing conflicts; maybe this is just for soldiers though.

This isn't really "advice" as such, but Budapest is a beautiful and historic city, so make sure to get some sightseeing in - I especially enjoyed the Hradcany castle. While there, eat some real goulash- it is good stuff. I'm so jealous - I wish I could go back...

BTW, what kind of internship are you going on?

I'm actually doing an internship with my Physics professor at Allegheny College (near Erie, PA) working with Liquid Crystals. For the second half of the internship, we go to Budapest to work with a collegue in the field in his lab since he's got some different equipment than we do, which allows us to do a few things we couldn't at our lab at the College.

Thanks for the advice. I have had a bowl of Hungarian goulash, though that was because the word "goulash" (I know I didn't spell it right) was one of the few words on the menu that I understood, so it wasn't what I was expected. Very good though :).

Though I know next to nothing about physics (I'm a political science grad student myself), that still sounds extraordinarily cool... Glad you are enjoying yourself, and keep it up!

Lucky you, PhysChic. What is your major? Mine will, in the distant future, be Biochemistry. However, I love math & physics! Have a great time!

Well as a man born in Dublin I can tell you that if you like bars and live music you must go to Templebar in Dublin city centre. It's where all the students hang out so you'll meet loads of like-minded people enjoying the craic! :)

If your friend in Ireland is Irish, they'll probably take you along to their local pub. It won't matter where this local pub is as long as you're with a few locals to help you "acclimatise".
If they're not Irish spend a night in the Templebar area as suggested and hire a car at some point and check out cities like Kilkenny city which still has a lot of it's medievel buildings and streets intact.
Then drive around the west coast which has beautiful country side and some really nice small cities like Galway and lots of really nice small towns and villages.
Ireland's a small country so you won't be anymore than a few hours drive from anywhere.

Talking of Galway, if you do go by there then you must drive through Connamara - beautiful countryside and lots of native Irish speakers.

My major is Physics. One of the professors that teaches a lot of my classes is in charge of the Biochemistry program at my college (no department, just interdisciplinary stuff), so I end up learning a bit about Biochemistry in the classes I take with him.
