Luis, what’re your top five (or however many) favorite monsters you've written?

Edited, fair point! Though in my defense his love of [redacted] has been widely stated.

Hi! Tacos are definitely the right foot for me to start on.

I'm a big fan of asada, al pastor, lengua, chorizo, and barbacoa. Please don't make me pick a favorite, though.

As for some of my favorite monsters, I'm partial to all of the couatls, the wereraptor, the Azlanti animals in RoA1, and the automatons in the Construct Handbook.

What part of Golarion would you most like to create a campaign in?

Paizo Employee Developer

I think the obvious answer is Arcadia, so I'll get that out of the way. However, I think there are a few other spots I'd like to see. I long for a proper campaign in the Lands of the Linnorm Kings. I would also love to have a good horror campaign in Ustalav. The Mwangi Expanse would also be great for a campaign. Also, anywhere I can get away with a Firebrand-focused AP would be cool, too!

Is there anything you learned (saw, read, experienced, heard about) as a child that still impacts your storytelling these days?

Do you pronounce your name like Lewis, or Louie, or can we just call you Lu-Lo.

I can't think of anything I learned as a kid that might have influenced my storytelling. I do remember my first experience with "sophisticated" storytelling (i.e. anything that wasn't cartoons or action movies). I got a used copy of Breath of Fire 2 for the SNES from the grocery store rental section. It was my first RPG and the first time anything was telling my any kind of serious story. This was in fourth grade so I was about to find lots interesting stories through books, too, but Breath of Fire got there first. I was in awe with everything going on and wanted always know more. I think it was the first story that gave me the idea of doing stories on my own. There are a few other bits of media that also had significant influences (Majora's Mask, FLCL), but this is the earliest influence I can remember.

Like this! (LOO-ees)

I've had a number of people pronounce my name in different ways over the years, Lewis and Louie among them. There's also been a lot of just 'Loza.' Lu-Lo is new, though! I've had Lu-Lu, but Lu-Lo is neat! I like it.

Silver Crusade

Yay! Lu-lo ^w^

Have you played any of the other Breath of Fires?

What are things you like most about Majorca’s Mask?

Paizo Employee Developer

3 people marked this as a favorite.

I played the GBA port of Breath of Fire 1. It was fine. Nothing amazing, but not a waste of time either. I've always meant to play the others and in fact, I have a copy of BoF3 on my shelf! Maybe it's time to crack it open!

Oh, boy. I am huge fan of time travel stories and I'm 103% sure that stems due to my love of Majora's Mask. I hadn't played any Zelda game beforehand, so it was all new to me. Link, Princess Zelda, the ocarina.

The first time I played it was at the game section of my local Wal-Mart, back when they would just put the full game out to play, rather than a demo disc. I was entranced from beginning to end. At first it was all a weird puzzle and I had no idea what to do once I got to Clock Town. Eventually, after one or two visits to the store, I had the initial three days down and figured out. I eventually got to the point where Link recovers the ocarina and has his memory about Princess Zelda. It was amazing! There was so much more to this story and I was hooked. I learned the Song of Time and I was ready to play it.

But I couldn't. I was really bad at using the C-Buttons at the time and kept messing up the song. There were two other kids watching me struggle and they offered to help me. They said they had Zelda at home and knew how to play the song. (I realized later they had Ocarina of Time.) I let one of them take over, he plays the Song of Time, and Link goes back in time. It was all so amazing to watch. Not long after, my parents swung by and I had to go home. I knew I had to get the game, though. Soon, I borrowed Ocarina of Time from a friend and that was a good time, but I was still eager to get back to Majora's Mask. Eventually, I got the game and just dove head first into it, sometimes staying up all night playing.

I love the dark atmosphere. I love the way that so much of the world is connected. I love how the various people of Termina, like the Gorman brothers, know other people in Termina. I love how everyone has a schedule and you can get to know everyone's life. I like learning some information and being able to capitalize on it with your next cycle. I love the music. Skull kid wearing Majora's Mask is an amazing character design. I love how the game doesn't need to explain everything that happens, such as the origins of the mask. I both love and fear Link's scream every time he transforms with a mask. I love swimming as a Zora. I love the bunny hood. I love Romani milk and the infinite magic it gives you. I love the weird alien segment on the ranch. I love how it's just weird. I love how, if you do things right, you can resolve most of Termina's problems in a single 3-day cycle.

I just love the game so much.

You might find that you like one of the benders like Katara or an earth bender from one of the later seasons. By the end of the show you will realize that Uncle Iroh is your favorite character.

When writing a monster, what do you usually spend the most time on?

Paizo Employee Developer

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I think it ends up being flavor. I spend a lot of time figuring out the flavor of a monster for a number of reasons. Sometimes, I just have a particular narrative for the monster and I want it to be fully expressed in the flavor. Other times, I will come up with a fun ability for a monster and then spend some time adding to or reworking the monster's flavor to explain the mechanic. If a monster has the ability to move at a high speed as a unique ability, I would then explain that in the flavor and expand on it by stating that maybe the creature uses its burst of speed to hunt or the speed makes it a sought after mount.

Ultimately, I want to set up the monster's story and support that with mechanics, so the flavor is most important to me!

When an Arcadian wants to go exploring away from home, where are they likely to go? Is that kind of curiosity stigmatized?

Paizo Employee Developer

2 people marked this as a favorite.

That's a good question and one I haven't really thought about too much. Assuming you're asking about leaving Arcadia to explore, they probably head to Garund or Tian Xia. Such travels are probably typical in the minds of others. Within the continent, I'm guessing lots of people head toward central Arcadia to nations like Xopatl or Innazpa. They might also head northeast toward the Land of the Northern Lakes.

It's only been name-dropped in a few spots. Specifically, Distant Shores, Faiths of Golarion, Borne By the Sun's Grace, and the Lost Omens World Guide.

Glad you finally got your own thread!

I've been coming around lately to darker or more horror-flavored fantasy. Pathfinder is brimming with occult, lovecraftian, haunted spirits, and a bunch of other great flavors of more creepy and less heroic. What is your personal favorite kind of creepy fantasy? Is there any particular story or motif you'd want to see more of in the game?

Paizo Employee Developer

3 people marked this as a favorite.

I feel like the creepiest fantasy I've enjoyed are more in the grim vein. Scary, malicious fey are pretty creepy. Something like Berserk (Japanese manga) is particularly grim and creepy and something I enjoyed a lot when I read it. Unfortunately, the likes of Berserk features too much mature and violent material to safely bring over to Pathfinder, though I'm sure we could pick some of the elements (harsh world where there are very few heroes, constant dangers throughout the world) and include them in a few spots.

Have all the ancestries in the ancestry guide already been publicly revealed?

The bits of Arcadia lore in the Path of Kings scenario are very interesting. I have a question though: are the Kansari, who were the original inhabitants IIRC, still around? And if so, is there a reason why the Ulfen collaborated with the Mahweks and not them?

Oh, hey! People have been posting in here. Yes, as of today, they're all revealed! You can look at a list of everything in the book right here! As of October 28th, no, but luckily it's the future now!

The Inner Sea World Guide's noting of Ulfen traveling to Arcadia and encountering hostile Kansari is something we're looking to move away from. It leans into "savage native" stereotypes and pulling on the real world "skrealing" term is something that doesn't sit well with me and other people here interested in expanding Arcadia. As a result, we're revising Arcadia's history (read: big retcons!) and what you're seeing in Path of Kings is the first of these changes.

Mind, Kansari remains an ethnicity in Arcadia and they're definitely still nearby, so the people haven't been erased. Instead, we're looking to tell a new story of the first Kansari and Ulfen encounters. Could there still be violent Kansari people? Definitely, just like there could be violent individuals and groups among all ethnicities, but we want to make sure that we don't paint the entire ethnicity with the same brush the next time we talk about them. As for why Ulfen travelers collaborated with Mahweks instead of Kansari, that's something we'll reveal when the time is right. :)

Care to give us a tiny hint about the grand bazaar ancestry? I know you said its something thats never been playable in Pathfinder or Starfinder. Does that mean its never appeared in either game or has it appeared but only as a monster and not a playable race?

Is there chance to have modern themed adventure too? I made one modern themed background.

I have given all the hints I am willing to give on this one. You'll have to wait and see what it is once the book releases!

I would love to see a modern version of PF some day, whether it's from us or a third-party company. I'm quite sure we don't have any plans to do so at the moment, but maybe your background could be the first step for you! I really like how you mapped modern performances to more than just music and dance.

Yes, quite a bit. I've snuck in little bits here and there when it makes sense. (Take a look at the gunslinger art on page 6 of Plane-Hopper's Handbook for one such bit.) I've also been homebrewing my own little corner of Arcadia and recording the adventures in the area. It's all homebrew and unofficial at the moment, but it's been fun to think about a fantasy take on westerns. You can listen to it via the feeds at Know Direction. (Link here)

Hello Luis. I saw that you answered a question on Discord(?) regarding Halcyon Magic and other forms of hybrid traditions; wherein you said their currently aren't any other revealed Magic combinations. My question is, wouldn't Theurgy be the official canonical name for Arcane and Divine combined? There's a Feat in Ultimate Magic called Theurgy which implies blending those two Traditions. Just wanted to see if this would be the case or if it would possibly be retconned moving forward.

Have you had any thoughts on the elves of Arcadia? I know nothing official has been said yet.

And could I ask what the common Ancestries in your podcast campaign’s region are?

I had forgotten about theurgy/mystic theurge! I can't recall at the moment if we've ever established where theurgy exists in a specific location in Golarion like halcyon magic is based out of the Magaambya. I don't believe we've shut out the possibility of theurgy as a concept in the setting, I just feel that we haven't properly given it a foothold in the setting. (Or if we have, I'm forgetting it entirely!)

I feel that all core ancestries (dwarf, elf, gnome, goblin, halfling, and human) have a place in Arcadia, but wouldn't necessarily be core to that region, if that makes sense. There are elves, but probably not as prominent as they are in the Inner Sea.

I gave Altameda a statblock for my reference and according to that, the city's population is 58% humans, 12% dwarves, 9% orcs, 6% halflings, 6% half-orcs, 5% waybounds, 4% other. Waybounds are a made up versatile heritage with ties to fey. I've yet to stat up the heritage for my homebrew, but might do so in the future!

I don't think there is any established ties to Theurgy in Golarion aside from the Prestige Class. But perhaps somewhere in Garund would work? I feel like if Theurgist/Theurges were to be prominent anywhere, it would likely be within the churches of the All-Seeing Eye, Nethys, and on the continent for which his faith originated. If anyone were to practice this Hybrid Tradition enough to establish it proper form of Magic, it would definently be those dedicated to THE God of Magic. Just an idea.

EDIT: Also, last question from me (for now): I didn't get to ask this during the panels due to work, but will Secrets of Magic help explain the differences of each Magical Tradition from the viewpoints of those who practice them? In particular, the disparages between the Arcane and the Occult? A lot of people seem to have a hard time understanding what Occult is meant to be in Golarion and why it was made a sepreate practice in PF2. Personally, I've been of the mindset that Arcane is more or less the "Science of Magic", Magic that can be measurably observed and reproduced through study and experimentation; whilst Occult covers all the wholly unexplainable forms of magic that the other three Traditions don't/can't cover. Really hoping to see what Paizo came up with to differentiate the two.

I think Secrets of Magic will do a lot to help clear up a lot about magic, not just between traditions, but also things like the magic essences. It's a really interesting book and I rather enjoy what I've read of it so far!

There was long missing "build spell", but one of my homeblew item has this effect.

I wrote:

Happy coin

Item level ??(Pending)
Fortune/Misfortune

This coin reminds nostalgia happiness, and bring fortune. Will be misfortune too.

Frequency Once per (day or 10 minutes) for both but sharing its count

Trigger Roll is in effect of fortune/misfortune and about to be in effect of opposite side: You can negate one fortune/misfortune which you can choose from currently in effect or one about to be in.

Trigger Rolled die has value that lower/equal or higher than axiomatic value: Flip that value (New value is max value - that value +1) per die. Do this to all die that described in trigger, in same roll.

Add: This item has both fortune and misfortune, but negate one doesn't cause normal reroll but no more fortune/misfortune to same roll still applied.

What's good idea for that Item's Item level and each effect's spell level?

So, I'm rewatching parts of the PaizoCon 2021 stream and noticed that nearly all of the Summoner Eidolon mentioned in the Secrets of Magic Playtest are making into the final book; except for the Amalgam Eidolon. The Contruct Eidolon seems to be what I imagined the Amalgam Eidolon would have been; a more or less completely customizable Eidolon. So, is the concept of the Amalgam Eidolon being done away with for good? Will the Balazar stands never be able to play their favorite Summoner Gnome again (I assume that Padrig is an Amalgam Eidolon)?

First of all, I've spent the last 48 hours devouring all of Valiant and LOVING IT! Loving all the lore and the story-telling is EXCELLENT.

My questions are as follows:
1. When are you writing a full book about Arcadia? :D
2. More specifically trying to place Altameda on Arcadia--is it on the other side of Lake Titipalati (sp?) from Xopatl?
3. Loving what we've seen of Arcadia so far with Way of Kings and Borne of the Sun's Grace. Any hints about what is going on south of Xopatl? I may have missed references to countries in that area.

Thanks so much for all you do!

Anything that's outside of the Lost Omens line is outside of my purview. As Secrets of Magic is part of the rulebook line, I don't actually know too much about what to expect. You might have a better chance contacting one of the designers.

I have not, but I've considered doing so as of late. I've independently published some ancestry content, and I'd be down to take a stab at waybound. One thing I'm considering is compiling and cleaning up my notes for Altameda and throwing them up on Infinite. It might be a good spot to include a waybound versatile heritage!
