D&D Is On The Move!!!

3.5/d20/OGL

I have seen the top of the mountain! i have lived as few DMs dare to dream!

seriously. for the last week i've been on camp. pretty boring stuff out in the bush; camping, mountain biking, etc. however, one evening we were staying up at Mt Buller. we'd bumped into a couple of uni students, who, as luck would have it, played D&D. so off we went, up to the top of Buller, and played for about 2 hours, behind us the sun setting over the surrounding peaks!
it was magical!

anyone else had a similar experience?

Isn't that where they filmed Broke-back Mountain?;> Anyway, yeah, I once gamed in the middle of the woods with not hint of civilization in a small ring of trees where the ground was covered with the thickest most comfortable moss I ever felt. Super Awesomely cool. gamed for like 6 hours. It was about a mile from my house while I was growing up so I did that a few times.
I would love to game in a natural cavern but I haven't found an easily accessible one yet. Everytime I go through the Caverns in Pa. I think about how cool it would be to run a couple sessions there.

Brokeback Dungeon...

Cleric (to the fighter) - "Hey boy, y'a look mighty cute in that chainmail..."

Fighter - "Is that a mace +1 under your tunic or are you just happy to see me?"

Bard (taking out his banjo) - "You got to know when to hold'em..."

Rogue - "This Ring of Sustenance doesn't seem to be made to fit a finger... Wait a minute..."

Wizard - "Ok, now that you've bent over, do you feel my finger going up your @$$? (The paladin says no, then the wizard shows his two hands) Ta-daaa!"

Yes. I've contemplated gaming at an SCA event or three, as there are usually a plethora of gamers there.

But, my favorite one was when my brother and I and about three of our friends took off to the woods on our "horses". Somewhere in those woods was the enemy...

It was more LARPing than anything else, but that phrase was nonexistent in our vocabulary then. There was this magnificent old oak tree, all lonesome in a clearing that became a part of the adventure, an escarpment of reddish soil and clay, a clearing with a white rock in the middle of it, ferns growing everywhere...

I still think of that place to this day - good memories!

That's the funniest thing I've heard all day. I've been laughing my face off for 5 minutes. Thanx.

We played a couple of times on pic-nik tables in a park. It was pretty cool except for the occasional gust of wind that kept sweeping our adventures off the table. Now we play in my garage and open the door in the summer time. It 's like playing out doors, but with all the convenience of the indoors. The best of both worlds, I guess.

It must be nice to live in a temperate-cool area. If we opened the garage door in the summer time, it would be like opening a convection oven. In the summer, we huddle under air conditioning vents with ceiling fans going full blast (which is kind of like a strong breeze, so we have to keep our notes on clipboards.)

In the spring, we have dust storms, so the only time we could comfortably play outside is in the winter, when it's 60 degrees.

The one thing I don't miss about Texas - the summer. Especially muggy, sweaty, sticky San Antonio summers. Ick.

Of course, in Bend, I get hot, dry, fire-filled, dusty, smoky summers. One extreme to the other. We have a problem with wildfires up thisaway....It was trying to SNOW earlier today, but now the sun is deciding to shine. As we say up here, if you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes.

Sorry Ultrdan, I wasn't meaning to critize you, as your comments where very funny. I was just having fun with the only line in the movie that I know. I kind of screwed up the whole quote thing.:)

F2K and Lilith, You should move to Delaware. Traffic is horrible, chemical plants abound, and suburban sprawl is everywhere! BUT!! The weather is never too bad. I would love to have more great gamers and DMs in the area, and wildfires have never happened that I know of. I would welcome you with open arms, mates! (and not just a few beers!) Superhero Canadians are of course welcome!

I live in Dallas, Tx, and having grown up in Gainesville, Fl I thought I knew a thing or two about heat. But every afternoon in Florida all summer a big thunderhead grows up and rains away the day's heat. It's still muggy grant you, but the evening becomes bearable.

In Dallas, Tx, you can walk outside at 8:30 at night in July and a hot wind of 95 deg fahrenheit hits you in the face. Not muggy, but you can poach eggs on your porch step. I could never have in my wildest ravenings conceived such an oppressive heat.

hmmm.

Anyone on this post from Australia?

Anyone know what i meant by 'Mt Buller'?

-cringe-

"Is that a +1 Mace in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?" lol!

Me neither, just heard "things" about it and thought the reference would be funny.

hehe dude; sounds like your my neighbor :) you can literally fry an egg outside on a piece of tin; asphalt melts to your shoes and is squishy to walk on; and I dont even own a heavy winter coat. I think it froze like twice this winter some freaky thing in February. It snowed and was gone by lunchtime. We used to play on the back porch at night, but it only encouraged the smokers so that idea got nixed. Eight months of the year I dont even go outside if I can help it; I keep getting summoned out there though :(

I have seen the movie - putting the two protagonists in chainmail would give it a whole new vibe - mighty swordsmen indeed. Then again, maybe it wouldn't..... ;-)

(Of course, I'm sure none of us want to offend any gay readers. There's just something intrinsically funny about sex, gay or otherwise.)

Suddenly I'm having flashbacks to the MTV Movie Awards parody of LOTR. Jack Black is one of the hobbits, and at the Rivendell council reveals he's the ringbearer because he took the One Ring and got a Prince Albert...

That brings me back... you're right, the heat in Texas can get quite oppressive. I used to live in Houston, and the humindity there just made it oppresive.

Weather news from Bend...We got a foot of snow last night. >:-( The big, fat, wet, slushy stuff that sticks to your shoes and soaks through everything. And of course, the studded tires removal date is April 1st. Go fig. If you ski or snowboard, this is great news for this town. However, since I work for a living, and live in the town of "Poverty with a View," this is not so good news.

Of course, the sun is shining and everything is melting, so huge puddles of slush are everywhere. Which will promptly freeze over and get covered with fresh snow with the next cold front that's moving in tonight. *does the not-so-happy-dance* Yay.

That was hilarious. I laughed right off my ball! (we use stability balls for seats here in my office)

As for the idea behind this thread. I would have liked to have done that. My Dad owns 100 acres of premium wood land in NB, nothing but trees! They also used to have a small mining operation there so there is a very old cabin that would be cool to play in. Very nice
ON the other hand we have played at my Dad's summer camp on Grand lake. IT was not as rustic but still nice to be able to smell the woods and hear the rain hit the ceiling. Ahh, memories.

I used to game with a group that included a physician. He had a lot more money than us and had turned his whole garage into a game room. We did game with the garage doors cracked open in the summer, because he had put a whole house evaporative cooler into the garage. He put it on the floor and fed it with a garden hose. The cooler top served as a support column for the gaming table platform and it blew 6500 cubic feet of cooled air into the garage per minute. I had to wear sweatpants to game at this guy's house. I never played D&D with them because they were Monty Haul to the core, but they had an "Axis & Allies" game on steroids, using a handpainted world map twice the size of a pool table, painted on a piece of fine wood, played with sixteen sets of Axis & Allies miniatures. (early 90's, not the minis they sell now, but the little ones from the original board game). Those games used to last 12-18 hours and featured anywhere from 8 to 12 players. Great fun when I had no family and no responsibilies outside of work.
