Boccob is the Overgod in desguise!!! Boccob even has a prestige class specially devoted to him: the mystic theurge. Yeah, heretics sometimes steal it but com'mon! Combining the arcane with the divine, what can be more of a nod toward the the Archmage of the Gods?!
Mina al'Thira Jjin Lara will live forever!!!

You misspelled 'deity' ;)
Our epic campaign had a plot whereby a creature arose that had the power to kill gods, and us mortals had to take care of it because the deities didn't want to risk one of their number being killed.
"All of the deities are in hiding," the solar tells us.
"Even Moradin?" asks my dwarven fighter with a level in cleric of Moradin.
"Even Moradin is in hiding."
"Pah!" I retort. "Moradin is not hiding... he is fortified!"
Lilith |
Hmmm...interesting...
For non-humans, I would have to say Ilsensine, god of the illithid, and Semuanya, god (goddess?) of the lizardfolk. They're just really fun to say their names, and I love getting into their alien mindset.
Greyhawk Pelor, Wee Jas.
Forgotten Realms Auril, Selune, Mystra, Shar.
And, another deity I like -
Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!
:-D

That is a good question... I like so many.
I think right now i have a thing for Elistree(I have no idea if it is spelled right as I have no books with me right now)
I also like Helm...for his stoic and unwavering view of duty. Moradin and Clangadin are the others that I like. I apologize to all of those out there for the spelling mistakes.
Thanks
A.
Oh yeah, Tyr was cool as well.

Olidamara, fun to say, fun to serve, whats not to love?
Pelor- He might be the big bad ubergod that is the bane of all undead..... but I've always enjoyed that his holy symbol looks a lot like a shiny baboon.
Kord- good natured fella that likes to wrestle. Always pictured him as a kind viking more than happy to lay the smack down.
Peruhain of Brithondy |
Guess y'all can just call me nature boy, 'cause I dig Ehlonna. Pelor and Farlanghn (sp?) are not far behind.
Of course, in my homebrew campaign, Penelothe the Wave-calming Queen rules. (Going through a storm in the Bering Sea with 60 foot swells kinda affects your imagination). But then I'm the DM, and I can enjoy the whole pantheon. At the moment, the Ever-Feasting Lord is in the house, so I'm paying homage to Panistreion, the elven god of wine, song, and enchantment.

I have to start with Bacchus, the god of wine, because I like wine.
In game though, I usually play a Cleric of Mask (love the cleric/rogue matchup "wealth rightfully belongs to those who can acquire it") or a Cleric of Fharlanghn (the eternal draw of the open road) or a Cleric of Death (must sacrifice so many lives a day, so sorry). How's that for a stretch?

Alasanii, Pholtus is a LN Greyhawk deity of order, light and a few other things I can't remember off the top of my head. He's a really stern disciplinarian and the Theocracy of the Pale (a nation run by his clerics) is an interesting non-evil totalitarian government in the Greyhawk setting. He actually has just as much enmity for Good deities (he and St. Cuthbert really don't get along) and well as for Evil deities (Iuz, another Greyhawk deity, for example) which makes his followers great as friends and foes alike. Who says LN characters can't keep you guessing?
As far as deities go, the evil ones are so much more interesting to me. Hextor and Nerull are both great patrons for antagonists, and Hextor worshippers can also make great anti-heroes. For Eberron, the Mockery strikes my fancy and I think the whole Dark Six is just cool as heck. Greyhawk specific, I love Iuz because he's just the guy that everybody loves to hate and has the coolest backstory.
Great Green God |
Well aside from the obvious... I've always liked the Greek and Norse pantheons myself. Nothing like family and Ragnarok to make your immortal life interesting. The Mythos pantheon is right up there too. Other evil gods look mighty petty compared to these things. As for an individual deity, the Coyote is my absolute favorite. Creator, trickster, warrior, and chick magnet, he's got it all. And that's all in-game as well as out.
As for gods created specifically for the game - I don't think I've ever really used one. I've never been too excited about the way myths, pantheons and religious organizations worked in D&D so I usually just use my own based on the ones I do like.

Much like Great Green God, I admire the Greek and Norse Pantheons, especially Hephaestus (I'm an engineer), Thrym, and Surtr (the last two I'm not sure why), and Pan.
I also like Eberus (spelling?) from that issue of Dragon (can't remember the #, but right before the recent format change).
I like Set, mostly because I've been reading a lot of Conan books lately.
Lastly, there's a god, similar to Set, that I made up for a homebrew world. I named it Lev Yithan, or sometimes just Yithan, basing the name off of something I read about the word origin of Leviathan. This would be a deity of Chaos and Darkness that takes the form of a giant seprent and also has some relation to the element of water.

That would be an awesome tattoo!
Thoth, Hermes, and Odin are all great.
Thor's my favorite deity in a comic book.
Bast & Anubis---they're tattoed on my either side of my rib cage. the figures were lifted & englarged from the Deities & Demigods manual & eqyptian backgrounds were added...
The White Toymaker |
Personally, I've got a soft spot for Lirr, the goddess of poetry. If the DM decides that the Archfiends and Celestial paragons and whatnot have Divine Rank 1, Morwel is also a fun choice. I mean, come on... she can throw a party and be the disco ball! Hanali Celanil, the Elven Goddess of war, is interesting as well.
And for those who play in Eberron, even the Church of the Silver Flame exhorts the citizens of Thrane to trust the Keeper.

Since I was a kid, my favorite historical deity has been Athena. She's the goddess of war AND wisdom! Paris would have died a happy old man if he had only chosen Athena as the most beautiful goddess. Sure, Aphrodite was in fact the most beautiful but that git couldn't win a chess game, let alone the Trojan War!!!
Rock on, War and Wisdom!

I love Lovitar (No, that isnt an old US tv show, although perhaps it should be!)
Lovitar is the rather outré goddess from The Barrens of Doom and Dispair, in the Forgotten Realms world. She is also known as Maiden of Pain and the Willing Whip
She has to be one of the more interesting Forgotten Realms deities and as a former fetish club promoter IRL I've met more than quite a few of her priestessess in London! Despite their rather intimidating look most end up being real sweeties deep-down and I cant help but think the same about Loviatar;)
I wish they would do something about her 'Lesser Faerunian Deity' circumstances and make her a greater power, she is the deity of Pain for crying out loud! I also dislike the way she is treated as a lacky for other powers such as Bhaal or Bane, if anything they should serve her!
:)

Well, my pc's are on a quest to find all the pieces of Osiris and bring him and his followers into the picture to battle all the undead that another pc brought into the world. Cuthulu is always in the picture somewhere; Loviatar has been big in the picture as a pc cleric that admires/follows her is trying to convince everyone that pain is a good thing and is just a teaching aid and really she should be invited and worshiped in everyones pantheon, he sends prayers to his diety to hook up with her; is pretty humorous in a sick kinda way.
