My insurance company, which is Farmers.
Hmm. Well, I don't really know anything about how they handle their claims process but I do know that one of the really awesome things we have at State Farm is our Select Service Program. We have contracts with numerous repair facilities all over America and, if you take your car to one of those shops, there's no waiting. The contract we have with the repair shops empowers their people to make the repairs they need to make without waiting for the adjuster to come look at it. In return, they agree to uphold the standards for State Farm's claims settlement process, so they won't charge for unnecessary repairs or anything unless they want to lose their contract with us (and lose a lot of business as a result).
Also, what was the situation? By your description, it sounds like the other party was at fault. If that's the case, why aren't you going through THEIR insurance instead of your own? (Unless they have the same insurance company that you do... or they don't have insurance at all, in which case they must go to a special Hell when they die.)

James Keegan wrote:For my rant, searching for a job really stinks. I just feel weird lying for one thing, since if I were to say "I'm just looking for a day job that will allow me to get out of my parents' house and will finance my artwork until I can quit and just do art full time", I wouldn't be considered an ideal candidate by any means.Have you considered the restaurant industry? Seems like the 13 or so years I was working that biz there were heaps of servers, cooks, hosts and dishwashers that were looking for that very thing. Also, most restaurant managers aren't expecting anyone to stay around much longer than 6 months. (Though I had much more luck in my kitchen.) Also, restaurants are usually populated by very creative and artistic people, not to mention that servers in the right restaurant with the right shifts can pull down a c-note or two in a night. (Though those people have true skills and good shifts.)
Also, if you do feel like lying, and want to put me down as a reference, I'll tell any job whatever you want me to tell them. It's no skin off my decaying teeth to get a friend into a job.
Considering it. I'm just worried about the policy some restaurants have in regards to facial hair, since I likes my Hulk Hogan 'stache where it is. I do know someone that works as a waitress at that horrible "Chocolate By the Bald Man" and even though she hates the restaurant, she makes a decent living on tips alone. It is an option. I'm also considering looking into being a security officer at the Met; a lot of artists have done that, it's four days out of the week and after working at Goodwill for four summers, I can pretty well handle annoying/outrageous people. Plus, you know, staring at Caravaggios and El Grecos all day can't be too rough. And then there's the American Wing, which has a lot of great paintings and is usually completely empty beyond the occasional class or tour group.
The only folks that have responded so far, unfortunately, are low-paying/non-paying internship jobs. And while I would go in for those to build experience and learn new stuff, it just doesn't really help if I'm spending $150+ a week and however many hours going back and forth on the train and then driving home and not even having any kind of savings to show for it.
If you're willing to do it, I'll definitely consider asking you to lie for me if my real references continue to flake. Thanks! I hope you'll be posting from the comfort of your own home soon.

The guy who actually caused the chain wreck reaction didn't even stop b/c he wasn't damaged. The 'stang behind him was able to pull into a left hand turn lane to avoid, the F150 behind her was able to stop an inch or 2 from her & the idiot that decided to stop all of a sudden but I couldn't avoid the F150 (traffic to the right & an island on the left) and the little Accord behind me couldn't avoid me b/c of the same reasons. Sooo, I'm going thru my insurance company for the whole thing and the insurance company of the guy who hit me (Travlers) is going to pay my insurance company for the damage to the back of my truck. It's a friggin insurance nightmare for me. And I really do hope there's a special place in Hell for the guy that stopped for the hell of it causing all this grief.

Tegan, I feel for you. Best of luck!
~sighs~ I am in a similar situation to Tegan. My Mom drowned my car on last Friday. It was raining and some of the areas around here flood. Not much, but it sometimes does not take much. Unfortunatly, she has had a lot on her mind and she was not thinking when she drove through a puddle. The car died on her and she had it pushed to a nearby parking lot. After talking to one of my friends who is an auto mechanic, I let it dry out and I tried it again. No luck. Well, he came over a few days ago and looked at it. He was hopeful untill he realized that there was water in the engine. ~growls~ And I had less than a year and a half to go untill it was paid off! My Mom went all hysterical when she found out that the car was toast. Luckly I have helped calm her down. ~sighs~ The is about the 8 th or 9 th bad thing that has happened in the past 5 years. ~shakes my head~ Why me? ~grins~ I think I may have pissed off the Big DM in the sky somehow!

Ah, so the guy who's at fault for the whole mess drove off. Yeah, that sucks. By all means, give a shout out for me here if there's any insurance questions you have. I don't work for Farmers, but I'm pretty familiar with the industry in general.
Yeah, the 'stang didn't hit or get hit but she was at least nice enough to stop. What really irks me is this all happened a block from work.
Cool about offering up answering questions, much appreciated.

I wish to give whatever computer demons that are out there a solid punch in the face. Invariably when I am trying to go on vacation, something goes wrong so that instead of prepping and getting stuff packed, I'm stuck at work, in front of a server, waiting for some retarded service monkey to pick up on the service line while I listen to bad "jazz" and their constant reassurance that I'll be "serviced" in the appropriate fashion.
The fact that I'm up three hours earlier than usual does not assuage me in any way. There is not enough caffeine in this building to make coming to work worth it when I'm supposed to be driving away into the sunrise with my sweetie for a vacation.
Grr...*stomps around in her office, doing her best Godzilla impression*

GEEZ, my squish wasn't so bad compared to drowning a car. How are things going? Can you get the engine replaced or are you having to get a whole new car? Hope it goes well for you either way!

Next Rant: Dice Nazis!!!!!
Every gamer has known at least one of these people. The ones who have "THEIR" dice which they will not let anyone else so much as BREATHE on. They always insist on rolling their own dice for everything because THEIR dice have been steeped in Holy Water under the light of the full moon and then wrapped in holly leaves covered in fairy dust for a fortnight before being blessed in a sacrifical ritual at dawn and annointed with sacred oil or some crap. These are the people who claim that their dice are 'lucky' but, in all reality, usually just outright CHEAT and lie about what they've rolled when a DM can't maneuver into a position to actually SEE what they've rolled.
Also, they'll be DAMNED if they let anyone use their dice for ANYTHING because they might 'taint' them with their unluckiness. They have their little plastic case of 45 d6s but can you borrow a few of them to roll your sneak attack damage since you only brought 2? HELL NO!!! They tell you to just roll yours multiple times.
Urrrrgh! I stopped allowing these people into my games, even if they are good roleplayers. I can't allow such unfettered snottiness to ruin my games. Everyone is at the game to have fun. We can't have fun if you're being an ass. Get out.
Okay I won't argue with the actual arguement Fate. What bugs me is how whenever someone objects to another persons dictatorial, unrelenting control freak actions they call them a "whatever it is " Nazi. Would it be all that difficult to call them a "whatever it is" freak or dictator, rather than using the name of one of the most brutal dictatorship humanity has produced? I'm an atheist myself but I have quite a few Jewish friends and this sort of use of the term is quite frustrating.

Saern wrote:Solar collectors in space is indeed a good idea that I have heard before. The exact name eludes me, but basically carbon cables can be made that could attach it to the Earth...Can we talk about the creepy, futuristic notion of a fricking CABLE running up into space? This is a 30-mile-long cable extending up into the SKY here!!! I would imagine that having more than a few of these things kicking around would cause serious problems for air traffic as well.
Actually I have seen information on the system in question and actually the cable would be for a space elevator to take materials up to geosynchronously orbiting asteroids acting as elevator anchors. The solar energy arrays would actually have microwave energy transmitters on the back (and be in very high orbits or at the Lagrange regions) and would beam the energy in the form of concentrated microwaves back to receivers either on Earth or on power transfer satellites which could transfer the power to the night side of Earth. It should be noted that even if a bird or a bat were to fly through the beam they would only experience a slight heating, leaving them unharmed. The collectors could be on bodies of water or in fields or on top of buildings. Microwaves can also be converted to electricity more efficiently than visible light. As for wind power, often what has happened is that a whole bunch of insects go splat on the leading edges of the turbine blades (no risk of depopulation, though) and change the way the air currents interact with the blades, reducing their efficiency. Also some birds (and bats) will get killed occasionally, no real problem. But if the turbines are located in a major migration route or feeding area you could potentially get a whole BUNCH of dead birds and bats which could potentially mess up a local ecosystem significantly, so it's always good to check these sorts of things BEFORE construction occurs.

I'm sure some people will disagree with me, but I hold to a philosophy that I read somewhere else once (perhaps even here on Paizo, as odd as that may be) that one of the best things you can do in the face of Nazism and like groups is belittle them. Make jokes about them, use their names in comedic ways (such as "dice Nazis"), etc.
Those types of people thrive on intimidation and fear. Perhaps the most undermining thing you can do to them is be irreverant. Don't even acknowledge that they are worth serious consideration. Make them look silly.
Everyone knows how horrible the Nazi regime was, and I'm not advocating turning a blind eye to attrocities. But when it comes to "thwarting" the spread of Nazis and other bigots, simply poking fun at them seems like a great way to take the wind out of their sails.
And as an aside, I also have some Jewish relatives, and they seem to have no problem with that philosophy themselves. Not trying to make a monolithic statement, but rather just saying that simply because someone's Jewish doesn't automatically make those topics taboo.
Hope no one's too offended now.

The reason that people do 45 in the fast lane with thier hazards on is that they are dumb. Not the "gee I left my keys locked in the car" dumb but seriously stupid dumb. The "I got addicted to meth and steal everything that isn't nailed down and wonder why nobody trusts me anymore" dumb. The "I will leave my 8 month old in a car seat in the car on a 120 degree day and wonder what happened when I get out of work at 5" dumb. These people are everywhere, and there is no getting away from them.
So... Break out the dice and splat some orcs or something. It will make you feel better, and hopefully keep you in the not dumb catagory.

Saern, you created a monster. Do you have any idea how long it takes to read through this thread from the beginning? Long enough that I don't even remember starting. I do know that there are some awesome people on these boards, and one wouldn't know it just from reading thier opinion on attacks of opportunity (a subject for another rant, I'm certain). I look forward to reading more of the stories that are placed here, at least the funny ones. There are others that are just heartbreaking. But at the very least there is a forum like this to rage against whatever life is throwing at you. Speaking of which...
Why does management not understand that happy workers are productive workers, and taking away the internet access is leading to frustration and boredom...bored people are dangerous...bored people run for president and invade foreign nations. And I haven't had a chance to play in a game for a couple of years, except for the D&D Game Days every fall, until today, and it was a one on one session since nobody else showed up. GRRRRR!!!!! Things must get better, I must engage in my hobby of choice, before my delicate psyche is warped into a Tom Hanks like state.

Hey, Christopher--I was in the same boat a couple of years ago--if you are anywhere near mid-Missouri, you are welcome to join the game I found!
Not anywhere near Missouri (Colorado Springs, actually), but I pass through every now and then to visit family/friends back east, so if I can convince the wife to make a stop there..."Hey, hon, why don't you take the kids swimming at the motel pool, I have an errand to run!"

hehe Christopher; your mind is now officially out of the box and your wrapping paper is torn; reading this whole thread not only means you lost sanity points, but now we know your not too tightly wrapped :) though you must have a lot of mental endurance :) and possibly bleeding eyes; better check for tentacles :)

You think reading this whole thing is crazy? Anyone who came in late to the Untitled thread and decided to read the whole thing now would be off his rocker. That's a waste of time for ya!
Um, I read the whole thing when I started posting in April. But then, perhaps I am just slightly off my rocker, oops, gotta go, my cat's trying to tell me something.

Almost a year without a regular D&D game, we're finally supposed to play this weekend. Everybody said July 15th would be the date to start. Sunday is the 15th and now we have people bailing. Bunch of jerks.
From what I've seen of your work, if you can draw voodoo dolls, they will be in much trouble.

James - are these the players that were going to be in your much anticipated (at least by me) Horror campaign?
Those rat bastards.
Send me their addresses. I believe an envelope full of cat poop is in order.

No need for "special mail offers" and voodoo dolls. The player in question double checked his schedule, was able to move some things around and we'll be able to play this week. It stinks that I only have three players, since that usually means that if one person can't make it, we just don't play. Now I just need to make sure that my introductory adventure (to give them a bit of experience before Escape from Meenlock Prison; only three players dontcha know) is ready to go. It's mostly roleplaying/investigation to get everyone introduced to the Styes and each other's characters, so I don't have too many statblocks to do. But since we get through roleplaying pretty quickly, I need a good deal of material.
We should have a good group, though.
Hellbred warrior type (either a paladin or a ranger/fighter)- doesn't remember his past, so I've got to slowly reveal it to him. The fortune teller, Mama Santina, is his only hope to learn who he was, so that he can try to redeem himself.
Half-elf Sorcerer- No elves living in this campaign, since they left in ancient times for their secret demiplanes. He's descended from them and faces a bit of racism for it (they didn't leave under friendly circumstances); he's looking to relieve a family curse, which lead him to the fortune teller.
Kenku Rogue- One of the Collectors in the Styes, his unique religious allegiances are what lead him to the fortune teller and the other characters.

Ok, so I guess I can stop collecting cat poop now. I almost had enough for three envelopes.

Mini Rant:
What ever happened to threads posted here that had some gaming gusto? I'm staring down a list of character build questions, favorite (X) topics, newbie advice, player problems, etc. I'd rate the topics as of late somewhere between mediocre to ho-hum.
Maybe it's just the lack of sleep talking, but I think i'll start a new thread on gaming gusto...see where it goes.
As ever,
