If you sent a submission back in March, I'd say it's totally normal not to hear a word about it by this time. I never heard word back about the one feature I had in the magazine until the contract arrived.

So if the article seems ok and it doesn't need major changes, we usually shouldn't expect any contacting before the contracts arrive? <anxious anxious ;)>

Contributor

Once in a while, Mike gives me a heads up for a clas act article. But - at least for me - the arrival of the contract is when you find out something's getting printed.

so far every time for me, i've found out when someone posts a preview on ENWorld. ;)

some times, though, Jason will e-mail asking for a revision on something, and then i know that they are definitely going to use it, just not necessarily when. ;)

Much Like Z. I tend to find out that an article has been accepted when the contract arrives (in fact the couple of times that I have been told via email that they like an article I have sent, and want to use it, the article never sees print...) So all in all I am happy to wait for the contract ;-)

You get the contract before or after the article is printed?

I am asking because my post office is excellent in misplacing important letters and packages (I think they eat them...)

Contributor

Of the 12 articles I've had printed, I've received the contract before the magazine 11 times. Imagine my surprise that one time flipping through and seeing my name on an article. :D

Well I just got the responce to my first real queary back. 2 no's and one 'Try again latter' seeing as it was sent on the first of this month I'd say Mikes prety much up todate if any one was wondering.

Contributor

Those "try again later" comments from Mike do in fact get accepted at a later date. So don't lose track of the idea, and put a little note on your calendar so you don't forget.

yeah, "try again later" basically does mean "we like your idea, but can't use it any time soon, so send it again and we'll see what we can do". ;)

any update on that? :)

On...?

I sent out a few rejections yesterday before I got completely swamped again. As soon as I have a few minutes to rub together I have more rejections to send out. I'm not sure that's the kind of news anyone wants to hear. ;D

Fine by me. Get it out of your system before mine arrive.

i remember hearing that a "round 2" on queries was coming, but i don't know if it came and went without my notice, or if it's still pending, or if it petered out. ;)

Queries, or articles?

Can someone post Jason's email. My batch of queries from 2 September 2006 have obviously slipped under the radar.

Hmm.. that is odd. I do still have a stack of older queries to go through though. Just to be on the safe side, you might want to resend them to

dragon@paizo.com

Other than that, I sent out a host of rejections a while back. I am hoping to go through round 2 on that batch soon. I am still trying to carve out the time.

Sorry about the delay

no problem, thanks for the reply. :)

So with Matt snowed under with CA's I was thinking of spreading my wings further and querying some other area's of Dragon, specifically the feature section. How does one go about this? Is it similiar to Dungeon whereby I'd give a brief, 1000 word synopsis of the article? Or is it more akin to CA's where I just send a hella list of one or two paragraph ideas?

In fact could someone remind me exactly what has to go to who as well?

Thanks a bunch.

Contributor

It's more like a CA query. Be sure to include your estimated word count, though.

And who's Matt? :D

Matt....would be Matt Sprange. The guy I just emailed about Conan....

BAH!

It's really just me sniping Mike because he made me cry :(

I don't know how to respond to any of this, so I'm not going to. ;)

So all in all I am happy to wait for the contract ;-)

self fulfilling prophecy perhaps? one arrived today :)

Surround the table with square brackets and all caps that read BEGIN TABLE or END TABLE as necessary.

Tab once between each column. Don't try to line the columns up on the page.

That's what I do, anyway.

Hmm... I know this is a little late (I should have had this table + article done months ago!), but I just wanted to make sure I was doing this table right. Tell me, does this look right? (assuming that the { } simply represent single tabs)

[BEGIN TABLE]{ }Feat{ }Prerequisites{ }Benefit

Blind-Fight{ }-{ }Reroll miss chance for concealment
Combat Expertise{ }Int 13{ }trade attack bonus for AC (max 5 points)
Improved Trip{ }Combat Expertise{ }+4 bonus on trip attempts; no
attack of opportunity
[END TABLE]

Or am I supposed to literally surround the entire square table with brackets? What about lines that carry-over to the next line?

Hope I didn't reveal any Paizo secrets by showing this snippet... :)

And, Mike: My apologies for the time taken to get my latest batch of article sent out. Life has gotten busy. But rest assured, I'm going to get these out the door ASAP!

Thanks in advance,

Robert

EDIT: Hmm, another question for Mike: What is the word limit for an Class Acts composed almost exclusively of tables?

Close. It would look more like this:

[BEGIN TABLE]
Feat{ }Prerequisites{ }Benefit

Blind-Fight{ }-{ }Reroll miss chance for concealment
Combat Expertise{ }Int 13{ }trade attack bonus for AC (max 5 points)
Improved Trip{ }Combat Expertise{ }+4 bonus on trip attempts; no attack of opportunity
[END TABLE]

Basically, write it like you normally would - same formatting and all that. The only difference is you only have one tab between columns, rather than making it look nice, and you use the BEGIN and END tags to help the folks in layout know for certain where it starts and ends.

No worries, man. To be honest, I'm so backlogged with Class Acts right now that I'm turning away new queries and submissions en masse. It's in your best interest (time-wise) to continue to hold off on writing those Class Acts until you hear from me (on these here messageboards) telling people to begin sending me stuff again. You're certainly welcome to send me anything you've completed already, but expect to—at best—get an email back from me telling you to resend it to me later.

I'd usually aim for about 1200 words for those. (When, you know, I'm not telling people to hold off.)

...

And in case anyone else is reading this and missed that part: If you're thinking of sending me Class Act queries at anytime in the near future, hold off. I have too many articles as it is right now, and I'm looking to work my way through those before I start accepting more.

Well, I'm glad I saw this info this morning, lol

I was thinking about up some ideas/houserules for alternate class features as CA articles for a change of pace. But if the CAs are full up, I'll go back to trying to sending in queries to Dungeon ;-)

Yay! The messageboards served their purpose of facilitating communication. :)

Okay, I'll get my outstanding Class Acts done ASAP, but hold off sending them until I hear from you. Thanks for your prompt response. :)

So I guess that e-mail I sent a month or so ago full of query ideas was a waste of my time, huh?

What about manuscripts submitted to Dragon?

Zherog wrote:

the large number of queries with an overly long lack of response does make a whole lot more sense now. ;)

i think i saw mention somewhere that between Wizards and Paizo, they were going to figure out what to do with the remaining unanswered queries. possibly Wizards may pay for some to be featured in their new deal, possibly Paizo will do the same. i guess we'll hear more within the next few months?

You're thinking of the transition FAQ. :)

I had positive feedback on a rules article (more like a class act) back in January, sent the full act, but I am still waiting for a response. Is it normal? I know it has to reach the point of the publication of the article to have a contract received, but it's been quite some months...

That amount of delay is normal. In fact, it's possible your January-submitted article might not even be in the oldest 25% of submissions waiting for action. Patience, friend. Soon (I hope) we will know what to do with the submissions we have, and then we will tell the whole world. :)

Hehe, yes, the quick response on the query made me over-optimistic ;) (as it was for something published on January and I thought that you would like to publish it close to that ;)).

Thanks for the reply!
