Is there a black hole in the submissions room at Paizo?

I for one would very much like to again thank James Sutter for really taking the initiative to hammer through all the queries people have been sending in. Getting a response (either yes, no, or resubmit) for queries in under a month is fantastic.

Hells Yes! This is amazing! The turnaround time is awesome. I can't believe how fast we are hearing about the proposals now. Keep it up!

And that we're now getting feedback. That's priceless.

Anyhow I've talked to to Nick about this, and he didn't do it, so I was wondering which Master of the Desert Nomands fan put the bhuts in the the monastary in "Winding Way"?

And yes, showing your a good writer is probably important, but apprantly not critical. ;) Just keep the mistakes down to a dull roar. One of the reasons I fire and forget most of my queries is to avoid smacking myself in the head and saying "Doh!" a lot.

I had a couple of bhuts, but James Jacobs made my couple into a plethora.

Maybe I had only one bhut. Can't remember. Anyways, just to show you how much adventures can change from prop to manuscript I'll post "Winding Way" here tomorrow once I pull it out of my labtop's tomb.

Hey Nicolas, would you mind if I shot you an email with a possible proposal of my own? Like a fool I posted in in the query thread a few days ago not realizing that only rejected queries are allowed in there. I've basically got two formats for one proposal and I can't decide which is more effected. Heck, if anyone else wants to have a peek, I'd be more than happy for the advice.

My own addy is nikt_2000@hotmail.com

Thanks

So now I'm getting worried.

I sent in a full adventure in mid-October, which I know was received but I haven't heard anything back about.

On November 4th I sent in an adventure query that I haven't heard anything for.

On January 26 I sent a follow-up regarding these two just to be sure that nothing had gotten lost in the aether and I haven't heard back.

When everything was delayed indefinately it didn't worry me to not hear back, but now that it looks like I should have heard back...

Coincidentally, I submitted a proposal for a Dragon article on November 3, got the green light on December 8, submitted it January 13, followed up to make sure it was received on January 26 and received a response that day.

OTOH, I have had numerous problems with my e-mail provider. Now I'm paranoid that my server has eaten all of my rejection letters.

Mind you, this is all much faster than when I wrote my first article for Dungeon back in 1997 when I lived in New Zealand and everything had to be sent snail mail.

TOMORROW IS DA BIG DAY!!!

Holy s$$@ikers! Let's see if I beat the auto-censor with that one. Can't wait. I don't even need the polymorph spell anymore...I am a giddy schoolgirl now!

Anyone else as excited as I am. Okay, that's an unfair question...anyone else kind of excited? :-)

The auto-censor knows all, sees all. I am cowed by its power and bend the knee to its will.

I sent in a query about 2 weeks ago, but no word from James yet. I guess I'm not making it in this round :(

Good luck to all!

This seemed the best place to ask...

Does Dungeon send you a contributor copy of the issue in which your work appears? I got my first publication in Dungeon with issue #132, but the contract I received and signed only mentioned monetary payment. I was thinking Paizo might just send the contributor copy "as a courtesy" when the issue is mailed to subscribers, but I haven't received anything, and it should have reached me by now if that were the case.

Anyone care to shed light on this for me? I know the submission guidelines mention that Paizo sends "at least one free copy of the issue containing your published work" (pg 3).

Thanks!

I wonder if the responses come at 12:01 AM western (Paizo) time or are they filtered for each proposals individual time zone?

LOL

Rambling Scribe, I bet that you already have an answer, but I am guessing that those proposals went into the black hole and that you should get a chance to tweak them a little and resend them.

And Galahad and Hunter, there doesn't seem to be a 'cutoff' anymore...they are just answering back as they are recived by the gatekeeper@paizo. It looks like they hold them for a while and look them over and then send back responses within a month or 6 weeks. And that timeframe for waiting seems to be getting shorter (SUPER THANKS to Mr Sutter).

All of this guessing is only for adventure proposals, I only have just sent in my first Critical Threat this week...so I have no idea about those (or Campaign Workbooks).

Bronswen, I think the extra copy comes separately in it's own envelope.

You'll get it separately and usually later than the issue hits the newsstands. That's my experience with it at least.

That has been my experience as well. (although I still haven't got a contributer copy of the Dragon that my last published work appeared in, and that hit the stands several months ago).

I would be excited, except that I don't know if my three queries from 1/21 will make it to the meeting. Last word from James was that he was on Jan 16th, but I still haven't heard anything.

Hopefully they'll let us know what the cutoff was when they post the number of queries at the meeting and the number of greenlights.

I received two copies of the first issue I was published in (#126), but I haven't received copies of 128 or 130, which I was also published in (in the Campaign Workbook section). My husband has a subscription, so I still received the issues, just not complimentary copies. I don't know what the policy is for complimentary copies... I sorta figured they only sent you copies of your first publication based on my experience and the fact that the contract doesn't indicate that they send you any.

Campaign Workbooks follow a very different process, though there have been indications that they are moving toward the adventure query system where you receive a definitive answer within a definitive time frame.

That said, I am still awaiting responses from Critical Threats sent in during January and February of last year, so we can only hope that James' whirlwind responses will affect the response times for Campaign Workbooks and Critical Threats also.

I've received contributor copies of the first four Dragons I appeared in; I had to keep reminding certain editors, though, that I was waiting on those copies.

It seems a little hit or miss. As I recall I got bonus copies for each of the Dungeon issues I've appeared in so far. I've appeared in a lot more Dragons however, and I believe I've only received bonus copies a handful of times.

Nooooooo! Next time you will get past him. You probably knocked off some hp this time around so he will be much easier to down. ;-)

Good luck in the next round Zherog, my bet is, with James Sutter at the submissions helm, that you won't have to wait as long as last time. Some good news at least. :-)

Contributor

In order to get something into the next round, I guess I'm gonna need to actually, well, submit something, huh? ;)

I have one query that's in the "proofreading" stage at the moment. I have other ideas, but none of those have coalesced enough to form a solid query. I seem to come up with more ideas for the Dragon side. Not that there's anything wrong with that. ;)

Sad news people. James is out today, so the meeting didn't happen. Hopefully he'll be back tomorrow, and we can do it then.

After sending some stuff in for the first time - well Steve did for us all, but anyway - I now know how it feels to be waiting for... something to get back from the black hole!

Tom, I just sent Jeremy an e-mail requesting a "Yeah, we've got all your stuff" reply so we Werecabbages can feel a little better knowing at least that they received everything.

Did it happen?

Did the magic happen!?

I tried to scry on Paizo at around 3:00pm their time...but damn their private sanctum! I saw nothing! At least they didn't put up the false vision of them laughing and burning my proposals to ash again...wait...was that a false vision? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

PS Nick, hand over the school girl outfit I'll stand watch for a while. ;)

::makes sure pleats are pressed properly::

Anyhow to while away the time why don't we compare notes about what's in this time around. I figure what with the holidays and the Gatekeeper they'll have about 80-100 proposals for features (adventures and backdrops) that got through to the meeting table. I think I have four things that got in out of eight or nine things sent (it was slow creative period for me;). Those include the adventures "Rotten to the Core", "Flying Buttress", and "The One That Got Away." Anyone else have titles they'd like to share?

I got somewheres around ten in this time. I hope at least one or two survived the thresher. I gotta good feeling this time around. C'mon lucky greenlights! Daddy needs a brand new schoolgirl outfit! :-)

Great Green God wrote:

I sent in 4 queries prior to my failing my morale check on writing adventure queries. 3 were axed right away. The only one I haven't heard anything on is called "Purgatory Workhouse." The fact that I got a CW accepted has raised my morale a lot, but I doubt I would be able to send in the volume of queries that seems to be needed to get some accepted. However, I'm finding that some non-work related writing is actually therapeutic, so who knows??? Dryder and I put together an Eberron query that we will send in for the next round....I guess we can call ourselves the Were_schnitzels.

Great Green God wrote:

All of mine got slaughtered by the gray render known as Gatekeeper Sutter over the last couple of weeks. There are a couple left to charge toward the Renton compound...

Somerton's Larder (3rd level) from 1/21
Hunting the White Cat (1st level) from 1/23
The Disappearance of Adiza Gaverelli (6th level) from 2/07.

(though they COULD be reconsidering 'Return of the Exiled') LOL!

Contributor

I sent one ("Overdue Library Book") and it got shot down in the pre-review phase.

I have some that made it past the first round, as well as some that got rejected. My typing monkeys did okay so far, but I'm not handing out bananas until I hear the word "greenlight."

Contributor

Oh yeah! I had two slaughtered by the gray render at the door. So I guess I have about eight or nine still in the running still. Here's wishing on a star! :-)

I submitted one adventure -- "A Little Knowledge" -- my first proposal to Dungeon for eons (I think my last rejection was actually from Barbara Young). It passed the gray render (lucky tumble check) but I suspect that's as far as it will go, after seeing the high quality of those rejections on the 'Critique My Query' thread.

Today I must have checked my email more often than is strictly allowed by International Law. :-)

Lets see I still have:

The Order of the Holy Sun and Sacred Moon from Dec
A Murderous Fate from October
A Sea Torn Asunder from August
A Rogues Gambit from August
Suspicions in the Shadows also from August
As well as four others I'd literally just sent in, all unaccounted for. So here's hoping ^^

I have three from 1/21 that I haven't heard anything on... so they may have slipped by the gray render Sutter or not - I just don't know yet.

*crosses fingers and waits anxiously by his email*

Oh what a great title!!! Don't know what direction you took the idea but I have this mental image of a new kind of inevitable chasing the PCs... :)

Two of mine got spiked before hand, one because it was similar to something already in the pipe and the other just wasn't all that good. That leaves six or so still in the running.

Decisions have been made, and rejections/resubmits will be sent out starting... NOW! Watch that inbox, kiddies!

(Greenlights will take another week, as they all have to be approved by Erik.)

By the way, this meeting covered everything up to (and including) January 16th. If you sent something before that date and don't hear back from us either way by the end of next week, we never got it and you should probably resubmit. Thanks!

James Sutter wrote:

Funny, I waited for so long to receive an answer and now I am waiting NOT to receive an answer... Funny how things turn...

Ouch. Got a rejection. So when does the pain stop?

So that's 2 adventures, 1 backdrop, and 2 threats fallen to James "the Gatekeeper" Sutter (so who's the keymaster?) and 1 adventure fallen to the "committee." That leaves only 1 more threat alive for this round. You can do it fella, I believe in ya.

I'm gonna go cry a little now.

Cheers.
