A shadowy path cuts through a dark forest, winding around an ancient druid shrine, an ominously rippling pool, the dark maw of a cave, and a hollow tree. Danger could lurk in any of these sites, making the woodlands the perfect setting for wilderness adventures!
The most-popular Pathfinder Flip-Mats in history return! These fan-favorite maps feature versatile adventure settings—city streets, forests, ships, taverns, and more—and now they're back for a repeat performance. Durable and lavishly detailed, these essential adventure set pieces are sure to bring excitement to your game table for years to come!
A special coating on each Flip-Mat allows you to use wet erase, dry erase, AND permanent markers with ease! Removing permanent ink is easy—simply trace over any permanent mark with a dry erase marker, wait 10 seconds, then wipe off both marks with a dry cloth or paper towel. Each Flip-Mat measures 24" x 30" unfolded, and 8" x 10" folded.
I've mentioned in other reviews how many flip-mats Paizo makes that feature forest scenes, and Woodlands is another one in the batch. One side, the most useful one in my opinion, is very basic: a wide path going through the forest, with trees on either side and some small clearings further in. This is the quintessential map for a forest random encounter, and the little clearings would be the perfect place for an adventuring party to choose as a campsite. It's not fancy, but very useful. The other side has multiple distinctive features: a small stream, the trunk of a huge tree, a cave, and a stone altar that the packaging calls an ancient druid shrine. The features aren't matched precisely with the forest/path backdrop, and instead stand out a bit like a poor cut-and-paste. As I've often commented in flip-mat reviews, distinctive features like these are actually a downside when it comes to maps that are supposed to be "generic" backdrops because they draw attention to themselves and limit reuse. A further drawback is that this flip-mat doesn't connect, as far as I can tell, to any other Paizo forest flip-mats.
My verdict: one strong side and one weak side, for an ultimate mark of average.
Used over and over and over for woodland encounters!
Buy this. You will get your money's worth. This map gets used more than any others in my collection (along with Forest to vary my woodland encounters). The straight road had obvious utility. The river and cave works really well for a number of different scenarios (lair, camp site, etc). Even though the art differs slightly, this *can* be combined with the Forest map. Your players won't care about the minor art differences.
Can anyone confirm that the squares on this guy are actually one-inch? I purchased Flip Mat Classics: Ship, only to discover that the squares were ~3-4% smaller than an inch. >:(
Oooh... I'm thinking that maybe the tile sets are the way to go.
The first one I looked at, "Forest Starter Set" says that it has 42 double-sided tiles?? That would be 84 images total? Arrange-able in a wide variety of ways, I'm sure.

Umm... well, since it was only $6.74 (on sale, regularly $8.99), I went ahead and purchased it.
So, now that I have it, and I see what it is that I purchased, should I infer that all of these 'flip mats' are comprised of 2 x 24"x30" maps?
That... seems a bit on the pricey side for 2 maps. Or am I just spoiled from all the free maps I've acquired from Pinterest and other sources?
But, anyway, my question above is one that I'm genuinely curious about: 2 maps per Flip-Mat? If so, I'll have to recalibrate my expectations.
Thanks,

Each flip mat is two sided. Dimensions and what each side looks like are both in the product description.
You are definitely spoiled by all the free maps you’ve gotten, this is a reasonable price for two high-resolution maps (talking about PDF product here since the print version is sold out). Around $4-7 per map is more on the normal side for this level of art detail at this map size in my experience with other map sellers.
If you’re doing VTT, the tile sets may make more sense. Keep in mind that all of paizo’s maps line are first and foremost designed for print, which means you will see duplicate tiles in those starter set boxes. People with physical tiles in hand can’t just easily copy/paste to make more of a common thing like “a straight path through some trees”
