Thanks! Very helpful. Those were the kinds of insights I was looking for.

Cheers,

Yes, I was referring to pre-packaging PF1 Society material for use/sale on the VTTs, as opposed to individual DMs winging it with home-grown material.

Regarding Crypt of the Everflame, yes, I understand that there is a boatload of content already available for use/sale on VTTs, but I am limiting this question to just the PFS material, and just for PF1.

The fact is, the Society material for PF2 is currently being adapted for VTTs (Fantasy Grounds, at least, I'm not sure about others). And this would make sense, given that there is active development and play happening in that milieu. And, of course, much of that play is happening remotely, in the time of the Plague, so VTT makes sense.

My question, which I thought was in keeping with the underlying questions of this thread, is whether it would make any sense to go back to the 10 seasons of PF1 PFS material, and adapt it for use in the same way? Or, has its time, and use, come and gone, and only a very small number of GMs would ever make use of it?

I fear I am not doing a very good job of communicating my question.

In any event, thanks for the responses. If the above helps clarify it at all, and you have further comments, please let me know.

Cheers,

- s.west

I don't know whether any of the PF1 Society modules were ever adapted to any of the Virtual Table Top systems, but I'm wondering whether there is any value in it, at this point, particularly in the context of the foregoing discussion (I haven't read every single post, but I have skimmed the thread.)

Or is the idea of playing remotely anathema to the PFS Ethos?

Just wondering (in the hope that there are sufficient interested parties contributing to this thread that one of them might have an opinion).

Thanks,

- s.west

Sorry in advance for what is probably a very basic question that I should already know... but, some things just don't sink in.

Let's say you have this Class, XYZ, and it has some collection of Class Features, X1, X2, X3, X4, and X5.

Now, let's say that someone creates a new Archetype based on that Class, and they refer to it as ABC (XYZ Archetype). And let's say that they create new Class Features, A3 and A5. A3, they say, modifies X1, and replaces X3. A5, they say, likewise modifies X1, and also modifies X2, and replaces X5.

In the end, should we refer to this as a New Class? In other words, do we now have a Class named ABC, with Class Features X1(modified), X2(modified), A3, X4, and A5?

Actually, it also just occurred to me that they refer to 'modifying' X1 and X2... Well, that makes them Not-X1 and Not-X2. Don't their names have to change to something new? Like X1(A3), and X2(A3,A5)?

Anyway, I'm just trying to figure out what sort of thing I'm supposed to end up with when presented with the description of a Class Archetype, as I have tried to illustrate above.

I've read 'the rules', but I will be completely happy with an answer here that tells me to go read 'the rules' (or whatever), if I've just missed the answer.

Thanks, guys!

@Tacticslion
No worries about the tone. And I get the point you're making

Thanks for responding.

@ckdragons, thanks for the response. And thanks for your candor about your own assumption on this.

However, why in the world would this be left undefined by Paizo? I don't get that, at all.

Ok, thanks for those answers.

Can you tell me where Paizo defines the syntax of their stat blocks? Most of it, of course, is self-evident, but there are a couple of things (like this one) that aren't obvious.

In other words: How did you two know the meaning of that '2'?

Thanks, again!

Greetings,

I've looked high and low for an answer. Now I am here.

If you were to take a look in the NPC Codex at the stat blocks of, for example, a couple of Illusionist NPCs, specifically, Prankster Illusionist (p.185) and/or Black Ice (p.238), you would find in one or two of their Spells a single digit instead of the DC, or in addition to the DC. For instance, with Prankster Illusionist, look at color spray:

1st -- color spray (2, DC 17)

While in Black Ice, you'll see:

2nd -- invisibility (2) and
1st -- magic missile (2)

Can someone tell me what those digits signify? Both by themselves, and with the DC?

Thanks!

@Sheep, I didn't know that they had such a policy (i.e., "we don't update player companions and smaller campaign settings"). Where would I find their policy statements?

And, yeah, as you also said, "It's unlikely you will get an official reply from any author, given the edition switch, long time since release and the small scope of the issue." That is completely understandable and acknowledged.

@Voodist, I am undismayed by your dismay : - )
Having spent the last 40 years of my life in software-related jobs, I am well aware that the first things that fall to a project's budget axe are those involved with testing (and, often, documentation).

Anyway, back to this situation. I'll find, or create, a suitable replacement (starting with @Sheep's "shopkeeper" suggestion.

Hey... HEY... HEY!!!!

As I was typing that last paragraph, something tickled my inner spidey sense. Why would there be a specific, erroneous, page # reference? That's an odd error... What if, I thought, What if they actually meant to cross-reference page 121 of... wait for it:

Pathfinder RPG Villain Codex

???

Well, sure enough, there it is, big as life, on page 121: "Corrupt Guild Member CR 4"

Whoo hoo!!!

Thanks, for the responses guys. If I hadn't seen them, I probably wouldn't have given this any more focused thought.

Note to Authors: Crisis averted. I know you were all poised to help me out on this, but the problem has been resolved, and you may stand down.

Cheers,

Greetings all,

This is a bit of a triviality, but... still, I want to see if I can get this right.

In the Subject doc, on page 12, there is a reference to an NPC, "Thallon", who is tagged as a "N corrupt guild member", and cross-references to Pathfinder RPG NPC Codex, page 121.

Unfortunately, page 121 of the NPC Codex describes:

> Rider of the Steppe
> Half-elf Paladin 14
> LG Medium humanoid (elf, human)
> etc.

Searching the Codex for "corrupt guild member", or "guild member", etc., I am unable to find what the original reference might have intended, or even a relevant substitute for it.

Anyway, I'm hoping that, perhaps, one of the authors of Taverns of the Inner Sea (Kate Baker, Eleanor Ferron, Michelle Jones, Jason Keeley, Luis Loza, Jacob W. Michaels, Joe Pasini, David N. Ross) might be monitoring these "Paizo Products -> Product Discussion" posts and can enlighten me.

That's it. Simply put, what NPC archetype is "Thallon", from page 12 of Taverns of the Inner Sea?

Thanks!

you deleted my post?

This isn't, specifically, a 2e post, and not even, necessarily, a post on the subject of goblins as PCs for RotRL (which occupied a few of the foregoing posts.)

But, before I get to the real question, I do want to say something on that latter subject. My own group has, in fact, been playing through the AP with one of the PCs as a Goblin. All I will say is that it has provided no end of both Difficulties and Opportunities; or, perhaps more appropriately, Risk and Rewards. And, if I may wax poetic, I will add that our campaign has aptly demonstrated that Risk and Reward are two sides of the same coin and that nothing worth doing in an RPG is done without that coin. It has been a lot of fun.

Anyway, my real reason for posting here is to find out if anyone knows of the existence of a rendering of Daverin Hosk's "Goblin Squash Stables" sign? I have searched and searched, but to no avail.

We have started the Hook Mountain Massacre, and the party is preparing to depart for Turtleback Ferry from Sandpoint. On the night before their departure, the party's Goblin took it upon himself to steal Hosk's collection of goblin ears and Chief Whartus' remains. He wasn't explicit on his intentions, but it might have involved ritual-ear-snacking, and possible cremation for the defunct Chief. We do know that the real point is, likely, to impress the members of Smink's little gang of goblins there in Sandpoint (cf. "PCS Sandpoint, Light of the Lost Coast"), as well as Smink herself, since he has been rather smitten with her goblin-ey charms.

For his final act, he wants to deface Hosk's sign by scrawling on it an image of a goblin striving to behead the sign's horse with a horsechopper.

I would very much like to provide that image to the group, but I need to start with an image of the original sign.

Has anyone ever come across such?

Thanks.

Oooh... I'm thinking that maybe the tile sets are the way to go.

The first one I looked at, "Forest Starter Set" says that it has 42 double-sided tiles?? That would be 84 images total? Arrange-able in a wide variety of ways, I'm sure.

That might work.

Umm... well, since it was only $6.74 (on sale, regularly $8.99), I went ahead and purchased it.

So, now that I have it, and I see what it is that I purchased, should I infer that all of these 'flip mats' are comprised of 2 x 24"x30" maps?

That... seems a bit on the pricey side for 2 maps. Or am I just spoiled from all the free maps I've acquired from Pinterest and other sources?

But, anyway, my question above is one that I'm genuinely curious about: 2 maps per Flip-Mat? If so, I'll have to recalibrate my expectations.

Thanks,

- s.west

I have no idea if this post will get any visibility at all, but I s'pose it's still the most likely place to pose my question:

I haven't purchased any of these map packs before, so I'm a little ignorant of what to expect. How many maps are included?

Thanks!

Vic Wertz wrote:

We have no plans to offer PDF-only subscriptions.

The main benefit to customers of a PDF subscription vs. individual PDF sales is that a subscription would be more convenient for them. But let's examine the reality of that:
.
.
However, if the answer is yes, then offering PDF-only subscriptions could cause irreparable harm to our business.

So we have to look at risk vs. reward. The reward for our customers is the ability to get a copy of the PDF about a week earlier than they can right now, and the reward for us is probably not going to be dramatically high. The risk, however, is damaging, or even potentially *crippling* our main business. That's not a risk worth taking.

I have no idea if any others are still responding to this thread (from 9 years ago!) but I just saw it and I thought I would throw out a remark about new realities that weren't as much in play in 2011, but that certainly are now.

First off, however, I tip my hat to @Vic Wertz for his straight up answer to the question, which acknowledges realities that those of us who aren't running a business can't immediately appreciate. Another way of stating the hard truth is: My bottom line doesn't care about your 'feelings'.

Beyond offering that praise, I do have a comment to add. I will confess to not having read any more of this thread than this small section where Mr. Wertz, justifiably, presents the business case for not offering a PDF-only subscription plan. So, it's possible that my comment has already been made by others.

It's now 2020, and many, many, of us have been forced to adapt to new realities, the likes of which we could not have imagined from our cozy world-view of the previous decade.

In my own case, in 2011 my gaming group was (and, I guess, still is) comprised of workplace friends. In 2014, that workplace, sadly, ceased to exist and the resulting gaming-group-diaspora has flung our members to far distant lands (Utah, Colorado, etc.), remote and inaccessible :-)

Needless to say, this had little effect on our gaming urges, and it wasn't long before we solved that minor inconvenience and began to play our games entirely within cyber-space on Al Gore's Information Super-Highway (don't jump on me, I'm just kidding... he never claimed to have 'invented' the Internet).

Anyway, the result is that many of us run our games entirely online. We ONLY have use for the digital version of things like rule books, maps, and tokens.

Having said that, I, personally, still prefer to possess physical copies of things like core rulebooks, and the like. However, and this is the point of this post, I have ZERO use for a physical copy of a combat map.

And that's why I'm making this post. I have to believe that, in current-year, we might want to find a way to make certain kinds of PDF-only subscriptions available. If there was a category of content for which PDF-only subscriptions could make sense, there might be a demand for it that would offset the possible loss in the print side of things.

Just sayin'.

Keep up the great work. Your material has always been of very high quality, and back when Wizards couldn't figure out who they were, I, for one, grew very fond of Pathfinder and recognized the value of Edition 3.5... Thank you.

- s.west

p.s. As soon as my group finishes this, very-long-running campaign in which we're engaged, I look forward to getting to know PFRPG 2nd Ed.

Remember, when creating content for BEGINNERS (and for Pathfinder Society, that would definitely include me), attention to detail and rigorous consistency is vital... otherwise it is easy to go off the rails and descend into frustration.

With that in mind, the "Beginner Box Pathfinder Society Character Creation Guide" references, on page 3 in the "What's Next" box, the "Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play".

Please correct me if I am wrong, but the current document that is supposed to be indicated by that reference is, apparently, no longer named that at all... but is named:

"Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild Guide", Version 8.0 - August 4, 2016... (PZOPSS0000E.pdf)

Is that correct??

Thanks.

- s.west

(p.s. Is there a hidden watermark, or other place where paizo's catalog number for a given PDF is embedded within the PDF itself?)

Hythlodeus,

Hey, no worries, at all. I appreciated the offer, but recognize that there are all kinds of things that can get in the way.

Also, I was working on a backup plan, just in case. I found a free tool ('Dungeon Painter') and I have made enough of a beginning with it, that I am confident that I can finish something serviceable before this Saturday. It won't be of the highest artistic quality (I found your start of the Scarnetti Manor that you posted - http://www.directupload.net/file/d/4498/ob4dnjs7_jpg.htm - that's looking good...), but it only has to convince my PCs that the Scarnetti's are a reasonable avenue of exploration. If I were to present them with nothing more than a line drawing, or, worse, "theater of the mind" only, then they would pick up on it as an unproductive lead. Get it?

Anyway, when I finish my maps, I'll post them in case they are of use.

Till next time.

Looking at the existing map outline, and assuming 10px/ft, that would work out to a main level (exclusive of the octagon - conservatory?) of 80'x 40'. The East wing ~27'x'22, and the bounding square of the octagon, about 35'x35' (I think). East wing = single story, main house 2-story...

That's just what I was thinking. Nothing too elaborate. Maybe a secret door off the master bedroom, you know... the usual ;-)

Anyway, let me know.

thanks, a lot.

Hythlodeus,

Thanks for responding.

Our next session is on 10/22 (2 saturdays from today). I would need it by 10/20. So, that may be too soon for you...

I'm going to have a whirl (tonight) at one or two freebie map-making tools, and see if I can create something that will suffice...

Any suggestions?

- s.west

p.s. I just realized that I probably should have posted this in the Community Created Stuff forum.

Feel free to move this over there, if that is where it is more appropriate.

Thanks

Greetings,

Warning, possibility of minor spoilers ahead for Players of The Skinsaw Murders.

My PCs have taken seriously the possibility of Scarnetti involvement in the early murders of Skinsaw. In fact our rogue (a goblin, I might add - now there's someone who has heard the hue and cry for diversity!) will be casing the Manor late in the evening on Fireday, the 11th of Lamashan. He hasn't really said what he will be looking for (this may just be an excuse to purloin a pretty bauble or trinket, or even find something new and exotic to satisfy his insatiable appetite).

Anyway, in order to keep alive this red herring, in their search for the true perpetrator(s), I feel it would be best to provide some level of mapping for the rogue's activity. Otherwise, the meta-game portion of the PCs brains will take over and realize that this must be a dead end, since there's no map, or other detail. Get my drift?

With that in mind, has anyone created any internal floorplans for the Scarnetti Manor? I have found the, most excellent, exterior map by Noxveritas out on DeviantArt. However, my searching has turned up a big zero for anything for the interior.

So, before I go off and try my hand at mapmaking (I'm not particularly optimistic about that), I thought I'd better ask if anyone else has squirreled away anything that would help with this?

Thanks.

Should the spreadsheet link still work? It doesn't, for me at least...

So after a hiatus of a few months, my group is getting back together this weekend to start the fourth module. As advised I am writing up a spreadsheet to keep track of what is going on around Sandpoint on a round to round basis. I am fleshing it out with descriptions of any action the players might witness with different descriptions whether they are distant, or close by. I also included a section to keep track of the duration of spells such as buffs. I am still in the process of finishing it (hope to be done tomorrow). As always any input you guys may have would be much appreciated.

Along with this question, I bought the .pdf of the Bestiary (1) pawns, thinking that I would be able to produce multiple instances of select pawns (for a pack of <fill in the blank>), but I find that this does not appear doable... It would have been nice if the .pdf allowed you to print off 'singles', like the original poster wants.

Comments?

Ok, will do. Thanks for the guidance.

Greetings,

Our newbie group has finished the intro campaign from the Beginner Box, and we have moved on to the short campaign presented in the BB GM Kit. On page 5 of the Beginner Box GM Kit, Spider Lair, under treasure, they refer to a 'potion of healing'... What is that?

The BB GM Guide (page 51) refers to "Potions of Cure [Light/Moderate/Serious] Wounds", but there is no mention of a "Potion of Healing".

Thanks.

Thanks for the guidance.

Greetings,

New Pathfinder player (and soon-to-be GM) here. I have the Beginner Box, and I will be playing through the example dungeon with some other newbies. After that I expect to play through some, or all, the various Beginner scenarios I see out there.

My question is this: In other RPGs there is some form of player handbook, like the BB's Hero's Handbook, of which each player usually has his/her own copy. In the BB there is only the single Hero's Handbook. Doesn't each player need their own? If so, where do you get them? If not, why not?

Thanks.
