Excellent Sculpts & Colors, Very Useful for SFS

4/5

This was the first set of Pathfinder miniatures released. It contains the Iconic envoy (Navasi), the Iconic operative (Iseph), the Iconic mystic (Keskodai), and a starship called the Sunrise Maiden (from the first adventure path, Dead Suns). Each miniature comes on a round black base. I've used the Iconics miniatures several times in Starfinder Society games (people frequently have to play pre-gens), and found them really handy. The details on the miniatures is really nice and detailed, with excellent painting and definition. I know there was a lot of criticism of this set when it first came out because of the price and (if I remember right) some delays and concern about the history of the manufacturer, but I really think they're worth the purchase for someone who plays a lot of SFS and can make use of them. I do wish the packaging was in a form where I could remove the miniatures and put them back without ripping the cardboard, but that's a minor quibble.

Pleasantly surprised

5/5

Okay, I had gotten the Icon #2 pack and was not totally impressed. i found one of these on sale, so I figured I would pick it up expecting to repaint the minis. However, the one I got has very good paint jobs on the minis, the only thing that is not clear are the android "glow lines" on our favorite android. However a bright ultrafine Sharpie will take care of that. Detail is good, with minimal flash lines, with the Shirren an especially well detailed mini. Very pleased with the improvements seen in this pack over the previous one.

Pew! Pew! Pew!

3/5

We waited a VERY long time for this product. I'm not sure it was worth the wait considering the hefty price tag, but let's look at each miniature individually...

Navasi has good detail on the body and weapons. The cloak is nice. Her head is not great. The face is low-grade at best with barely enough detail to discern the nose and mouth. The eyes are surprisingly detailed with a pupil and sweeping upper lid. She even has very fine eyebrows. Her legs feel hearty enough that they shouldn't break off at the ankle. The mold appears to be two pieces, front and back hidden well enough by the cloak, but there is excessive glue around the seem which is disappointing. Overall, I give her 3 stars.

Iseph has good body detail especially in the upper torso and the rifle on his back. He has better facial detail than Navasi and good eye detail, but I think it could still use some improvement. He looks more aquatic than android with his heads and arms just being colored, but lacking any circuitry detail. For that I can only give him 3 stars

The detail is best on Keskodai, but he suffers from a lot of frail pieces: arms, staff, upper legs, and various appendages. The plastic material is fairly soft so it should be okay, but I would fear some breakage if dropped from the table or tossed in a shared storage space. The eyes are solid yellow and could have benefited from some black dots or something to make them look multifaceted. 4 Stars.

The Sunrise Maiden is the only ship I intend to buy. I skipped out on the two fleet packs as I have plenty of alternatives for ships. If they would have produced the Drake or Pegasus or perhaps some of the enemy ships from Starfinder Organized Play (Jinsul attack fighter, etc), I think it would have encouraged more sales. Overall the detail on this model is nice. It has some smooth lines and some sharp edges that give it a sleek, fierce look and the color scheme is inviting. I'm glad they decided on a hex base to match the standard battlemap used in Starfinder. Of the models in this set, it is the one I like the best. 5 stars.

Overall, while I like the models, I think the combination of long wait time left us expecting much better detail. Wiz Kids could have easily produced models just as detailed in less than half the time and for a lower price point.

Will these be a part of a subscription service? Or do these need ordered separately?

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32

WHAT THE FRAK Paizo and Ninja Division Games!!! $39.99 + shipping for 4 pre-painted miniatures. Or $79.98 + shipping for both sets. I feel like our wallets are being space hijacked. Get rid of all the extra plastic packaging if it will help cut down on the price. This is going to put a big dampener on those looking to play Starfinder.

It's not packaging putting the price up, it's the choice to go nonrandom and not lose out on quality. Those three factors (high price, poor quality, randomness) are well known to interact in that way - you have to pick one. So far, anyway.

I daresay the demand for Science Fantasy is perceived to be lower than that for Fantasy too. Volume is going to have a huge impact on unit cost for minis, I suspect.

No subscription options, at least initially. So you should preorder. Note that if you ever do preorder something then before it ships sign up for a subscription that also includes that product, your preorder will automatically be cancelled by the subscription. So it never hurts to preorder.

Wow I hope they don't do this with all the miniatures I don't mind the random. But paying 14.99 for 3 small/medium minis + 1 large was nice. There should be no reason these are much more expensive.

Do we have any estimate when these will be in stock? I preordered them and don't want to be caught completely off guard by a charge of over $100. Even a rough estimate will help my budgeting. Still financially recovering from Gen Con.

I hope the quality stepped up a bit. The ones that I saw at GenCon were... lackluster.

That would be disappointing. I don't mind paying ten dollars for a mini I need, but it gets annoying if the quality is questionable.

That price is making the pawns look even better.

There's no firm date yet, but at this point I wouldn't expect them until at least November.

I bought the pawns at Gen Con. They are built tough and the art is nice, but a HUGE problem I have with Paizo paper pawns is that when you punch them out, many of them lose a significant amount of their artwork that's left behind on the punch out card. I wish they would cut them in a way to retain all of the art. I'm sure that would significantly increase the manufacturing costs though.

Thanks Vic! It never ceases to amaze me that you guys somehow manage to answer nearly every question.

The minis look pretty good to me on these pictures.

I agree on the prices being high, there are other sites where they are cheaper, but Paizo offers a reasonable discount too.

It's not so much the cost, it's a function of the fact that the artwork they use is of varying sizes but the pawns are all identical sizes. If they kept them all "within the lines" then some would be tiny.

There's also the problem that the die cutter shifts around a bit, so they'd have to leave a white border around the illustration and that would make some of the artwork even more minuscule.

Here's one post by Vic about the issue, although I'm sure he's written more.

I think that might be the only post I've written on that topic, but that is indeed the answer!

There are rumors of massive problems regarding the Starfinder minis.

The fact that "Soda Pop Miniatures" have removed all hints of them from their homepage is not very reassuring either.

If i were to bet, i'd say we won't see any SF minis this year, but that's just speculation on my part.

Any news would be much appreciated.

Special Starfinder™ Miniatures Announcement September 27

Did this announcement ever happen???

Yes.

Note that the kickstarter they announced is for unpainted minis, not for this product line of prepainted minis.

It appears there are delays with this set, but latest word is that it will still go ahead at some point.

A quick look at the comment section for the kickstarter does seem to suggest that delays are pretty much what folks have come to expect from Ninja Division. There's certainly enough doubts raised to make me want to take a closer look before putting any of my money on the line.

Scarab Sages

Compared to the pathfinder iconic minis which are 30/35 dollars for six minis its a lot less bang for your buck.

Hey Marco, I believe that they are rebuilding the Starfinder miniatures section of their site now that the Kickstarter is live. And we should have stock of the Starfidner resin Iconic miniatures that were pre-released at Gen Con in a few weeks. They are included in the current Kickstarter campaign but will also be available apart from it for some amount of time. I'm not trying to be cagey, I honestly do not know how long we will have the ability to get stock between now and when the Kickstarter is fulfilled.

Kick starters are a good way to pay for moulds.

Which can, presumably, be used for both unpainted and pre-painted minis.

Truth. Soda Pop/Ninja Division's history of poor communication, delayed fulfillment, and non-fulfillment means that I'll be staying far away from that kickstarter.

Hopefully Paizo added some kind of penalty clause into their license agreement with NJ to try and keep those problems to a minimum....

Hoping I'm wrong about this.

Are these gonna be painted RESIN or PLASTIC miniatures?

I was somehow under the impression of it being plastic minis, but the more i think about it, the more likely it seems, that they will be made out of resin.

Can somebody from Paizo comment on this?

Thank you.

Hey Marco. I'd also assumed plastic (since the unpainted line goes out of its way to emphasise those are resin).

For the clueless, can you explain the difference (I mean the functional difference to the user, not anything technical)?

My experience with resin is limited, but in the cases i saw, it had more details than plastic minis, while being more fragile.
Breakage seemed to be much higher than with plastic minis.

But i guess it really depends on the kind of resin or plastic being used and if it has a protecting clear coating finish on top or not.

For example: the old D&D minis (2003s Harbinger through 2010s Lords of Madness) are made of a soft plastic which just doesn´t break, whereas most of the newer Pathfinder Battles minis are made of a slightly harder plastic, which may break when falling off the table.

I don´t know if the same is possible with resin, but it seems to break most of the time when falling off the table and onto the floor.

I found a thread on the issue.

Thanks, Jeff. Thanks, Marco.

The Kickstarter has reached over $195K and as a result the Vesk fleet & Kasatha fleet have been unlocked.

Sadly Shirren fleet is not yet in sight (goals going up to $225K).

If the campaign will reach $215K, there will also be a second fighter miniature being added to the fleet packs.

That's a good thing even for people (like me) who won't be supporting the KS, because it means that eventually (ETA late 2018 or 2019), ppm minis of these may be offered.

Like the idea of the Kickstarter but I'll never join in; I have zero use for unpainted minis ... takes too much of my time running two campaigns - I can't imagine also trying to paint minis as well :)

This was one of the reasons I ended up backing it.

I suspect I’ll never get around to getting these painted, but I’m kind of making a down payment on a diverse range of prepainted minis.

It seems the unpainted Iconic minis ARE already available after all.

I just checked, you have to log in to facebook to see them, strange.

I´ll try to find a better link for those who are not registered there.

You don´t have to log in to facebook, just click on the images.

From the looks of them, i really like the "Sunrise Maiden", as it is immeadiately usable unpainted out of the blister (put on pole, insert pole in hex-base: ready to fly).

Not on the kickstarter.

I hope quality goes a little up, there´s quite some edges on those minis, but maybe that´s packaging or something and the pics aren´t the best either.

The Humble Bundle features an extra version of the envoy mini.

All i can say is, unpainted minis are way better than prepainted ones. You can give them your own touch and painting is the zen of the gamer.

Uh resin. Not a fan. Breaks way too easy in my experience. Not a good thing for minis which will see a lot of play.

When it comes to licensed products, we usually wait until we know there's a reasonable amount of predictability in the release schedules before we offer subscriptions.

Hi Jeff.

A friend of mine got an email from Ninja Division Studios to the effect that the prepainted minis weren't going to be released until March. The reason given was some kind of quality control issue, but from your comment here it seemed that maybe they weren't talking about all prepainted minis..

Are you able to provide any more information? There are these sets but also the various individual minis due for release (the ones previewed at GenCon) Do you know if they've all been delayed until March? Or if the individual figures will be released this year and the sets will be delayed until next year?

Cheers

The announced delay was just for the prepainted plastics. (You can read more about that here.) The unpainted resins that were offered before the Kickstarter should be arriving in our warehouse imminently.

I guess i won't be buying any Starfinder minis then and stick to the pawns for special creatures and use Star Wars, Warhammer 40K & PFB minis for the rest.
I already use Battlefleet Gothic, Dropfleet Commander & Full Thrust models for the starships.

I also would be very surprised if Ninja Devision really makes that march date a reality.

The only thing they seem to work at momentarily, seems to be the Kickstarter and the pledge manager has already been moved to january 2018...

Terrific. Thanks, vic. I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it once I get a few sets in hand and appreciate the distinctions between the various lines.
